The women of Omnes, a NGO in Greece. When the so-called Balkan route was closed in 2016, ten thousands of refugees got stuck in the north - a poor region, already considerably struck by the economical crisis. In the 30.000 people town of Kilkis near Thessaloniki, several natives decided to help the refugees around them anyway. They started a grass roots initiative from scratch, without any help from authorities.
A key part of their work with Omnes is their intense monitoring of the people they take care of. Because they do monthly surveys, they posess precise information about the skills, profession, social situation and special needs of each person. The data - anonymized - is being published openly, which led to less prejudices and more understanding in the community.
Because of this, they were able to get support by the city and to built up a network, providing decent living conditions for the refugee families. In Kilkis, they live in apartments - in a lot of other places in Greece, they are forced to live in isolated camps.
In addition, Omnes opened up an "inclusion center" in the city, open for every member facing special challenges, like for instance senior citizens who live alone or disabled people. Because most of the #refugees are given the feeling of being normal, accepted neighbours, they are more willing to give back to society.
Today, Omnes is constantly taking care of about 550 people. The model was discussed as a positive example of creating better chances for proper inclusion at several conferences in Europe.
The house, where Omnes os located in, was built by refugees about 100 years ago - Greeks who had been expelled from their homes in the Ottoman Empire, today Turkey.
