Eurasian Nuthatch / sitta europaea. Brocton, Staffordshire. 10/01/16.
Sunday's sunshine was a real treat after the 'long grey' we have been experiencing for far too long.
It was great to see and photograph these birds in decent light :-)

Did you know that one of Canada’s richest ecosystems is also one of its most endangered? Garry oak ecosystems are enchantingly beautiful and high in biodiversity. They are unique to a small part of southwestern British Columbia, where less than 5% of the habitat remains in a near-natural condition.
These spruce trees are very old, they are small because of the poor growing conditions on the bog.
It is also referred to as Bog Spruce, Swamp Spruce, and Shortleaf Black Spruce. Black Spruce is the provincial tree of Newfoundland. It is a member of the pine family.
Black Spruce occupies the wettest sites, such as boreal bogs, and co-mingles with Tamaracks.
In wetland areas, especially on bog sites of low fertility, Black Spruce can remain stunted for decades. Trees on the borders of a wetland area tend to be taller, while those in the center may be only five or ten feet tall.

The sepia effect from iPhoto, Mac's older photo-manager. I still like it better than Photos, their newer one. The old one has more interesting edits to offer. And Flickr Editor offers the frame. All free (more or less), after you buy the computer and join Flickr!
Thanks for looking :-)
I took this photo just in time - 5 minutes later the last of the light disappeared from the sky.

I drive up to Mammoth Lakes a couple times a year on Hwy 395. It is one of the most beautiful roads in the USA. It seems that every time I reach Independence, CA, the clouds are doing their dancing shadows routine on the east face of the Sierra Nevada Range. I always stop and watch them.

This photo of Lake Wassookeag during sunset is a slightly different composition from the previous one that I posted. The location is next to an all-season recreational trail in Dexter, Maine. Such a wonderful encounter with a group of horses during a hike in the Heather fields of the Velue, This lookthrough presented itself with the one horse perfectly standing still. Very happy with the result.

The hall of plane trees (“Platanensaal”) of Herrenchiemsee is located in front of the old castle. The oldest plane trees here are already 150 years old. They grow in the shape of a canopy and therefore have to be pruned every winter. Regular pruning is intended to help prevent them from breaking apart at some point. The gardeners cut back the annual shoots. This creates the whimsical crown shape and in summer the trees provide loose shade.
