The remains of an Old Tree in Allestree Park in Derby. Photo Taken: 03/07/14

Sadly, a very large old tree in our neighborhood (and I'm not sure how many others) lost its battle with Irene last night. We lost a limb from an old elm tree and it seems that water got into a small crack in an archway made by the earthquake earlier in the week but things could have been a lot worse. Glad it's over and I hope we've seen the last of nature's power for a while.

Oldest trees on earth - The oldest bristlecone pine individual is more than 5,000 years old

Sarv-e-Abarqu ("cyprus of Abarqu"), also called the Zoroastrian Sarv, is a cypress tree in Abarqu, Yazd, Iran. It is an Iranian national monument and major tourist attraction. It is over four thousand years old and may be the oldest living thing in Asia.

Scientists have dated the tree rings on this elements-tortured limber pine to be atleast 1,350 years old. What they do not know is, how long after the lava flow occurred, did this pine sapling take root. However, geologists have tested the magnetism of the lava samples and concluded that the flow is over 2,000 years old - the lava flow was already 700 years old when this pine tree took root.

Was für ein schöner alter Baum! Schade, er ist zu groß zum Mitnehmen.

What a beautiful old tree! It's to bad, it is to large to take it along. (Seen on the way to Muckross House, Co. Kerry, Ireland)

A lovely park constructed by the CCC between 1933 and 1942. It contains Hemlock Trees that are over 300 years old. The park suffered much damage during Hurricane Sandy which dropped over 30 inches of wet snow. Over 3000 hours were invested in just clearing roads, trails and campsites in this park from some of the largest trees in Maryland after the storm.

Fonias means Killer and the river has taken this name because too many people got killed trying to reach the "higher" parts of the river that comes down from the mountains. You can walk by the river and have the pleasure to enjoy the wild green nature around....

When I deeply contemplate the transient nature of human life, I realize that,

from beginning to end, life is impermanent like an illusion. We have not yet

heard of anyone who lived ten thousand years. How fleeting is a lifetime!

Who in this world today can maintain a human form for even a hundred years?

There is no knowing whether I will die first or others, whether death will occur

today or tomorrow. We depart one after another more quickly than the dewdrops on

the roots or the tips of the blades of grasses. So it is said. Hence, we may

have radiant faces in the morning, but by evening we may turn into white ashes.

Once the winds of impermanence have blown, our eyes are instantly closed and our

breath stops forever. Then, our radiant face changes its color, and the

attractive countenance like peach and plum blossoms is lost. Family and

relatives will gather and grieve, but all to no avail?

Since there is nothing else that can be done, they carry the deceased out to the

fields, and then what is left after the body has been cremated and has turned

into the midnight smoke is just white ashes. Words fail to describe the sadness

of it all.

Thus the ephemeral nature of human existence is such that death comes to young

and old alike without discrimination. So we should all quickly take to heart the

matter of the greatest importance of the afterlife, entrust ourselves deeply to

Amida Buddha, and recite the nembutsu.

Humbly and respectfully.

Poem ~ White Ashes from Rennyo's Letters

translated by Hisao Inagaki et al

This particular White Ash tree is very old and dying. It is 5 to 6 feet across at breast height. Truly immense. Possibly 300+ yrs old. I remembered this spiritual poem/writing and thought it was fitting for the photo.

When we're young we have faith in what is seen, but when we're old we know that what is seen is traced in air and built on water.

Fifteen centuries old olive tree, which was sadly uprooted from its natural environment and was transplanted in the center of Athens in 2015, after its expropriation for the construction of the new railway line in Korinthos - Patra section. The tree comes from Elaionas village in Aegialia's area.

Το δένδρο προέρχεται από το χωριό Ελαιώνας στην περιοχή της Αιγιαλείας.

It is nice to see that they have found ways to use old trees.

The park was forced to close for two weeks in February 2014 after Storm Darwin caused 19 trees to fall and work was needed to repair damaged pavements, railings and unblock pathways. But there was some good news … Ssome of the oldest and rarest trees knocked in Limerick’s People’s Park by Storm Darwin are being given a new lease of life by being transformed into works of art.

Sadly one of the rarest trees in the park, an ornamental tree called a ‘Tetradium Danielli” which was about 80 or 90 years old was destroyed in the storm. The tree in question is commonly called a ‘Bee Bee’ tree as it is covered in late July and August with masses of small white flowers which attracts large numbers of bees as a source of late summer honey. Prk management had a chat with Zambian woodcarver Paradazi Havatyitye and as a result he carved three beautiful bees in the remaining stump.
