"Old Tree"

Pamela Rosenkranz

Manhattan, NY

June 21, 2023

It was freezing that morning. And it was so very quiet. Appletrees are very common around the area where I live. Their bizarre shape and the great light shortly before sunrise drove me to take this picture.

Ancient Hornbeam trees form strange twisted and bending shapes in the deeper parts of an ancient coppice in Hatfield Forest, in Essex, England. Some trees are hundreds or even over 1000 years old.

New background. Ok to use for your private artwork but not for commercial nor resale. Please do not use my stock to make other stock.

If used, please credit me with a link back to THIS page and a small sample of your work. Thanks!

*** I'd love it if you'd post your artwork to my group Temari's Galactic Studio. ***

Chemical snow is a phenomenon by which dense fog and smog particles chemically combine themselves in case of frost and fall like snow.

The yew in Tandridge, Surrey, England.

Such a beautiful tree, so old, she might be 4000 yrs. (a female yew)

She has a girth of more than 9 meters!

A very special energy at this quiet place.

At the back she is hollow.

Yews regenerate themselves by letting their branches "drop" after many many years and where the branch touches the earth a new tree will come up.

Bad hair day..your roots are showing! I've posted a similar shot before.

It's really good to hear from you! I've been worried about you. No worries about Thanksgiving. I know you had to go back to settle everything and get back to school.

I was disappointed that Logan couldn't make it here but I understood as well. I'm sure he'll be here by the end of the year so that's a good thing. It's a bit lonely around here but someone needed to check on the old homestead here. I wish at least Autumn would come home but I know she's having trouble adjusting to the parent's disappearance. That's what comes from being the eldest...having to grow up even when you don't want to. At least I can disappear into my music.

You know I want to hear all about it and you know that you can call any time of the day or night. I'm honored that you instinctually know that you can trust me and yes, I've been trying to look out for you too. I consider you as much of a sister as I do Autumn, Lily and the kids.

I figured that you needed some time to process what's happened and I know how hard it is to go through. I guess in our case it's a bit easier since we have some hope still.

Call when you feel and stay safe.

Hugs and love,

Tobi

p.s. Guess what?!? I think Logan will be home in the next week or two at the longest!

A drive (or hike) outside of Ifrane will take you to the Cèdre Gouraud Forest, filled with cedar and oak. This area of Morocco is also a sort of breadbasket with its lush valleys, which receive more rainfall than any other place in the country (and nearly North Africa).

At Davidson College, the entire campus has been designated "the arboretum" and it serves as a collection of trees that flourish in the Piedmont section of North Carolina.

If you view a map of this place (upper right corner of page) and set it on "hybrid", you will get an idea of the numerous trees here.

As white pine ages, the crown shape changes. The tree on the left in this photo originated after a wildfire in 1801. The tree on the right originated after a fire in 1692.

After that many years of growth, trees reach the maximum height that the site can support. At that point the crown starts to flatten out and gets rounder. Notice the difference in shapes between the two crowns. The flatter, rounder crown shape is typical of extremely old conifers.
