Merlin's Oak is a famous oak tree that once stood on the corner of Oak Lane and Priory Street in Carmarthen, South Wales.

In local tradition, Carmarthen is said to be the birth place of the mythical magician Merlin, claiming that the origin of the name Carmarthen, or Caerfyrddin comes from Myrddin, the Welsh name for Merlin. Merlin is said to have made a prophecy regarding the old oak tree:

When Merlin's Tree shall tumble down,

Then shall fall Carmarthen Town.

Merlin's Oak was probably planted by a schoolmaster in 1659 or 1660, to celebrate the return of King Charles II of England to the throne.

In the early 19th century, a local man appears to have poisoned the tree, with the intention to stop people from meeting under it, and the oak is believed to have died in the year 1856.

In 1951, a branch was broken off from the tree. This fragment can still be seen in the Carmarthen Museum.

In 1978, the last fragments of the tree were removed from their original place, and are now in the Civic Hall of Carmarthen.

These are probably the last of the wild garlic shots as I'm all garliced-out now. They were taken where there are a few ancient oak trees surrounded by the stuff. This was a few of weeks ago and the other from a little later.

One of the times when the old Instamatic got it just about right...

This is one of those images that can tell many stories. The more you look at the subtle details the more the scene comes to life. As the sun set that day it highlighted the beautiful details of Parisian life in the summer time. Relaxing near the Seine River while enjoying a cappuccino and watching people go by in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. From the couple crossing the street to the waft of smoke being highlighted by the setting sun, it takes me back to that very day. Iâll always remember the smell of fresh pastries and the hustle bustle of the city that is uniquely Paris. To capture this image I used my Sony a7R2 with a FE 16-35 lens F4. Settings: 1/320 sec, f/8, ISO 100. To process this digital image I used the Film Emulation Collection (Kodak Portra 160) Lightroom presets and profiles. I absolutely love the colour and grit of this Lightroom collection, itâs perfect for todayâs digital photographer that wants a beautiful film look! Copyright: Tim Martin and Presetpro.com. Some fantastic wood carvings at Stokesay Castle nr Craven Arms, Shropshire. This example is of a weary old face carved into the old oak supports and uprights of the gatehouse. Could be a 'Green Man' I guess or a gargoyle - a curious creation whatever he is..

A hooded figure stands among the fallen red autumn leaves before a great mossy oak tree. Antlers sprout from his head, and, in his hand, he holds a spear. Behind him, a white stag looks out from the dense foggy forest.

Here is a work for Halloween 2012. This is Herne the Hunter the ghost of English folklore who haunted Windsor Forest. Falstaff dresses as him in Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor". There little written history as to his origin but it is said that he was a keeper of the forest who hung himself from an oak tree, ever after known as Herne's Oak, for some offence. Another version of the legend has him killed by a white stag while protecting King Richard II. Some scholars believe, though, that he is another version of an ancient Celtic deity, Cernunnos, The Horned God (who is also thought to be one of the origins of the horned humanoid image of the Devil).
