This oak was the largest in Abruzzo regarding its girth. With its 7.8 m it was among the largest in Italy. In the past there have been attempts to cut it down for its wood but it was saved by the fact the in the entire Abruzzo there was no saw large enough to cut its massive trunk.

Unfortunately in July 12, 2007 it crashed on the ground probably for its age (large portions were by then dried or rotten). Nonetheless the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga committed to leave it there as exhibit of high naturalistic value. I was not able to see it still alive. Nonetheless on August 16, 2008 I went to visit and honor it.

Sun through an old oak and through the trees on the western horizon....

I changed the title on this 4 times this morning.

the sky was a dull color but I liked the silhoutte of the turkey vultures on oak #3, and I don't like changing color of my pictures.

Exceedingly old trees

Rastlose Liebe

Dem Schnee, dem Regen,

dem Wind entgegen,

im Dampf der Klüfte,

durch Nebeldüfte,

immer zu! Immer zu!

Ohne Rast und Ruh!

Lieber durch Leiden

möcht' ich mich schlagen,

also so viel Freuden

des Lebens ertragen.

Alle das Neigen

von Herzen zu Herzen,

ach, wie so eigen

schaffet das Schmerzen!

Wie - soll ich fliehen?

Wälderwärts ziehen?

Alles vergebens!

Krone des Lebens,

Glück ohne Ruh,

Liebe, bist du!

Restless love

To the snow, to the rain

To the wind opposed,

In the mist of the ravines

Through the scent of fog,

Always on! Always on!

Without rest and peace!

I would rather through suffering

Fight myself,

Than so many joys

Of life endure.

All the inclining

Of heart to heart,

Ah, how curiously

that creates pain!

Where shall I flee?

To the forest move?

All in vain!

Crown of life,

Happiness without peace,

Love, are you!

The Vehm Oak or Erler Oak is 600 to 1500 years old and is one of Germany's oldest oak trees. The common oak (Quercus robur) stands near the parish church of Erle. Under the oak Vehmic Court held sessions till the 16th Century.

The Vehmic courts, Vehmgericht, holy vehme, or just the Vehm, also spelt Feme, are names given to a tribunal system of Westphalia active during the later Middle Ages, based on a fraternal organisation of lay judges called francs-juges or Freischöffen ("free judges"). The principal seat of the courts was in Dortmund. The proceedings were sometimes secret, leading to the alternative titles of secret courts, silent courts, or forbidden courts. The courts took jurisdiction over all crimes during the Late Middle Ages, and those condemned by the tribunal were done away with by secret means. After the execution of the death sentence, the corpse was hung on a tree to advertise the fact and deter others.

The Erler Oak (femeiche) is considered the oldest and most famous Vehm tree in Central Europe.

For over 100 years is the tree, damaged by lightning strikes, storms, human influences and her age, subscribed as a natural monument. The stem is hollow for about 250 years and now consists only of sapwood. The shell, which is held together by rods, encloses a cavity with a diameter of almost three meters.
