Present day, the A143 follows the path of much of the old Railway. Earsham Station building still stands, but there is nothing left of Beccles or Ditchingham Stations, only a few pictures.
The line closed to passenger transport on 5th January 1953. The full length remaining open for goods traffic until about 1963. The middle section was then closed, with access from each end continuing a while longer.

344/366 - 2008
Every time I have an old map sprawled out across my desk, I feel compelled to take a photograph of it. This is the third or fourth map that has made it to my 366 set, which seems like a lot... but given the amount of interesting maps that I see, is not really that bad.

Illustrations drawn and engraved by H. Winkles.
Plan drawn and engraved by John Rapkin
Scale: Six inches to one mile.
Produced by the London Printing and Publishing Company
Among several items of interest are:
The terminus of the Preston to Longridge Railway on Deepdale Road. This was the western extent of the line before construction of the tunnels that would take the line to Maudlands and eventually link up with Preston Railway Station
The inclusion of H. Winkles engravings of the North Union Railway Station and the Preston & Wyre Railway Viaduct.
The Moor Brook, seen at the very top of the map running in the open. It was this watercourse that influenced the building of so many mills in the area of St. Georges Road / Moor Brook Street area.

Note: "Frogs Point" for "Throckmorton's Point," now "Throgs Neck"
-------
"Throckmorton" is a name from Worcestershire England. It possibly meant "farmstead by a pool with a beam bridge" ....
-- From research by Steve (Visual Photons)
For some odd reason, of late, Oldham has been on my mind - something as a Rochdalian one has to guard against mind! - but what with the latest Metrolink developments, and a wonderful pic posted by Tarboat I thought it was time to dig out a c1930 street plan of the town that has altered so much and is being altered. The cutting through of the ring road in the 1960s and '70s changed it much and now the extensive rail network seen here (and that was 'pruned' over the decades) is effectively vanishing as part of the great tram scheme. And those station names! - can any UK town have had such a selection of ringing names? - Werneth, Clegg Street, Mumps and Glodwick?
At the time of this plan Oldham was, sadly in many ways, just past the industrial flush of youth - at the start of the 20th century the town was widely recognised as having the greatest concentration of cotton spindles in the world - a staggering achievement. At left, in Werneth, the Hartford Iron Works was still the centre of the massive Platt Brothers enterprise that equipped many mills - including one suspects many overseas mills that began to challenge the town's and area's primacy in cotton.

Possibly late 1960's - this image is taken from a multi-image postcard. Elmer is a small village effectively at a dead end - there is only one way in and one way out and the end of the road leads to a gated community - in fact there are several gated communities in Elmer. It's hard to imagine that a petrol station would have got much business along here let alone two of them, both within about four hundred yards of the "end of the road." Here's the same location in 2016 showing a garage still existing but no petrol sales for a long time. www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.7949078,-0.6170835,3a,75y,67h,8... A bit further down the road there was another garage and an early Google Streetview used to show that it was branded Proteus but seems now to only show a 2016 shot - here www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.7922033,-0.6065008,3a,75y,72.54... The 1970 map of Elmer on Oldmaps shows both garages clearly.
Tivetshall to Beccles disused Railway. Notes and more photos in this Album
The map comes from the June 1952 copy of The Railway Magazine which included in it an article about the Waveney Valley Line written by B.D.J. Walsh. I trust the Mag and B.D.J Walsh will not mind me using it to included in my Disused Beccles to Tivetshall Line - (Waveney Valley Line) Set.

IMAGE INFO
The map was drawn from survey data obtained between 31 Oct 1883-21 Nov 1883.
Note that Thomas Hanley's "Woronora Hotel" is the ONLY hotel marked on the map at Como (though the actual location was closer to the station) since George Agnew's first version of a "Como Hotel" was not constructed until c.Jan 1887 - ie: too late to appear on this map.

Map by Rand McNally: insets on reverse for Tampa, Miami, Cuba and the SE US. As late as 1957, Miami, Jacksonville and Tampa were the only Florida cities with populations over 100,000; though the state was a strong tourist magnet, the overwhelming majority of the state was still rural, and still very Southern in culture.
