The Old Bazaar is a bazaar located in Skopje, situated on the eastern bank of the Vardar River, stretching from the Stone Bridge to the Bit-Pazar and from the Skopje Fortress to the Serava river. The Old Bazaar falls primarily within the borders of Čair Municipality but a part of it is located in Centar Municipality. As one of the oldest and largest marketplaces in the Balkans, it has been Skopje's centre for trade and commerce since at least the 12th century.

The earliest known sources that describe the existence of a merchant quarter on the bazaar's territory date back to the 12th century. During Ottoman rule of Skopje, the Old Bazaar developed rapidly to become city's main centre of commerce. The Ottoman history of the bazaar is evidenced by roughly thirty mosques, numerous caravanserais and hans, among other buildings and monuments. The bazaar was heavily damaged by earthquakes that occurred in 1555 and 1963, as well as during the First and the Second World Wars and faced various rebuildings following these events.

Beside its importance as a market place the Old Bazaar is known for its cultural and historical values. Although Ottoman architecture is predominant, remains of Byzantine architecture are evident as well, while recent reconstructions have led to the application of elements specific to modern architecture. The Old Bazaar still is home to several active mosques, türbes, two churches and a clocktower, that, together with the buildings of the Museum of Macedonia and the Museum of Modern Art, form the core of the modern bazaar.

In recent years there have been a raising interest to make the Bazaar a touristic attraction. On 13 October 2008, the Macedonian Parliament adopted a law recognising the Old Bazaar as cultural heritage of particular importance for the country to be permanently protected. In early 2010, the Macedonian Government began a project for the revitalisation of the Old Bazaar, which includes the restoration of several objects and aiming a further economic and cultural development of the site. These actions are seen with a good eye by the local community and not only.

Little is known to us regarding the history of Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd. From the title of a book, we believe the company was founded in 1865. All manner of waterworks fittings were produced, including below ground fire hydrants, and above ground "standpost" hydrants, one of which is shown here. Their products were sold internationally, and the company maintained offices in London, as well as Calcutta and Bombay, India.

"Our Works are the largest in the Empire specialisisng in the production of equipment for the control and measurement of water. The shops, which themselves cover an area of over 28 acres, are provided with the most modern machine tools, moulding machines, and other equipment for rapid, economical, and accurate production." -- from the 1936 Glenfield & Kennedy catalogue.

I love walking on the streets of Valencia, because you can always find little artisan shops like in old times.

Me encanta pasear por las calles de Valencia, porque siempre te puedes encontrar tiendas artesanas, como antiguamente.

Frigorífico Anglo del Uruguay

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Frigorífico Anglo del Uruguay was a meatpacking plant located at Fray Bentos, Uruguay, on the Uruguay River bank.

In 1924, the Vestey group purchases the old installations of Liebig Extract of Meat Company and the production goes on under a new name.

During its peak period, El Anglo had 5,000 workers whose ranks included English, Belgians, Russians, Spanish and Italians. It finally closed in 1979 after Europe and the United States had cut back their purchases from Latin America. Small brick houses with thick walls running along the river's edge in Fray Bentos form the "Barrio Anglo," a city-within-a-city where meatpacking workers lived that featured a hospital, a school, a social club and a football squad.[1]

A view towards the village of Orheiul Vechi (Old Orhei) in Moldova. The muddy river is Raut, the third largest river in the country, which has carved gentle valleys with its meandering stream. The view is not from a natural cave, but from a limestone mine; limestone has been an important building material in Moldova, especially in Soviet times. The town of Old Orhei was founded approximately in the 15th Century AD, but the area is rich in archeological remains, including ruins from a fort and bath house from the late medieval Golden Horde, a Mongol/Tatar khanate descendant from Genghis Khan's empire.

I went to have my car checked today and there was this meeting of old cars. Some were looking really good in the sunshine.
