Taken for photo challenge 2009, day 89: children

It seems so lovely and simple topic for photochallenge - children... On the first glance, it' s so easy, children aren' t insects that I couldn' t find under the snow some week ago :-) But as the day went, as more I understood how crazy this task actually is in wintertime. My 12 year old son tells he is not a child anymore, plus, he doesn' t want to be a model for photos... All outdoor attraction parks are closed, in school I couldn' t get during working time, and what is left? Some families with children on the street that I would chase like a hunter hiding behind the corners and trying to jump out and cross their way into appropriate moment? ...

Feeling desperate I went to a toy store in hope to find some kid there... but instead I stepped into a scene where I found a wild owl under the roof next to toy store... so I got unique shots thanks to this challenge... just of a bird, not a child. The owl is posted on Flickr now. Needless to say, toy store did not grant me with any kids nicely playing around shelves.

So it' s quite late, and my last escape is the child I had been once myself... here it is. This photo is one of first colour photos in my family album, and it' s taken by my grandfather, photographer, who lived long and fulfilled life, 101 year...

not a great shot, some blur, but i think it really really works. One of those imperfect perfect shots. Making it look old really pulls it together w/ the subject. I think with was Canon 6d 28-80.

Having bid goodbye to John down in Springfield Frank and I had one last night just us and a half a day left before departing home to opposite sides of the continent. Our last morning dawned clear and dry and as it would turn out the railfan gods had one final surprise in store for us. After a fun morning enjoying Santa Fe Junction for the last time and with only 90 minutes left on the clock we headed toward the West Bottoms. I still wanted a really nice morning lit shot along the UP and when we drove by I was astonished to see a standard cab leader on the point of an eastbound holding west of Hickory Street (CPK001) beside State Line Yard on Main 3 strung out across the Kansas River on the old Missouri Pacific bridge.

In short order the Knoche Yard bound transfer behind UP 1566 (EMD SD40-2 blt. Nov. 1976 as CNW 6928) and 1958 (EMD GP60 blt. Sep. 1989 as SSW 9656) got the light and they were underway across town on Union Pacific's KC Metro Sub .

esterday we visited Railway Museum in Chennai.Very first impression of me is that takes me to my age of 10 to 20 years.

It took me 5 minutes to recover back to normal position as I gone back many years and was travelling from TPJ to Egmore on seeing the locomotives in the picture.

All the trains from south had been pulled by the YP or YG class Steam Locomotives up to Villuppuram then by Electric Locomotives to Chennai.

The 6.25-acre museum has technical and heritage exhibits, with a sizable collection of steam engines from the British period to Indian made.

It is impressive to note that the museum is well maintained one adorned with old beauties in showroom conditions.

One should not forget to appreciate Sathis kumar. S.K Section Engineer and in charge of the museum, also photo artist and trekker by passion, for his dedicated service making the museum more attractive and interesting with gardening and cleanliness.

take me back to an old Time

I got up early today and drove to Lewiston, ME expecting to photograph hot air balloons but that never happened as rain was expected. Very briefly the sun shown through some clouds and this is the result. There are several large mills in Lewiston that have not been occupied since the 1950's or so. The one here has been repurposed to be used for businesses. The out of place apartment building was built about 20 years ago I was told by a former resident.

Mulgrave Castle near Sandsend, North Yorkshire. Replacing an earlier motte-and-bailey fortification, Mulgrave Castle acted as an administrative centre for the vast Yorkshire estates of its owners and in the seventeenth century found a new role as a hunting lodge. It was re-fortified during the Civil War and then slighted on the orders of Parliament in 1647.

The shot that rang out on the night of October 18, 1869 affected dog lovers everywhere. On that night when Charles Burden found his favorite dog dead. He vowed someone would pay for the murder of his beloved and valuable hound.

The trial of Burden vs. Hornsby was tried in Warrensburg, Missouri on September 23, 1870. At this trial the plaintiff's lawyer,George Graham Vest made his famous speech - essentially a eulogy of Old Drum - appealing to the jury and to dog lovers all over the world.

The speech won the case for Burden, who was awarded $50 in damages for the loss of Old Drum. Hornsby took the case to the Missouri Supreme Court where the verdict was upheld.

Crazy Tuesday, Something Old

This kooky image is one of the few where I don't recommend viewing it LARGE. : )) My fascination with it would be a clear sign that I'm reading too much Stephen King lately....but there's no such thing as that IMHO. : ))

1906 Locomobile "Old 16" Race Car

In 1908, driver George Robertson and mechanician Glenn Ethridge took this car to victory in the Vanderbilt Cup, America's first great automobile race. It marked the first time an American-built car won a major international road-circuit race. The Locomobile competed while wearing race number 16, and it's been known as "Old 16" ever since.

This race car initially cost an extravagant $20,000 at a time when a decent-sized house could be had for about $1,500. Now in the care of the Henry Ford Museum, Old 16 is still in running condition and is entirely original.
