Ban Sala are a notable geological landmarks in Nan Province, located in northern Thailand. It is also known as the "Stone Pillars of Nan" or "Clay Pagoda" in English. These sites consist of impressive limestone pillars that rise from the ground, similar to the hoodoos in Bryce Canyon in the United States. These striking formations are the result of millions of years of erosion by rainwater and wind, which has worn away the softer layers of rock and left behind the harder layers that make up the pillars. What makes these places truly unique is the combination of the scenery and scenic surroundings of Nan. The green valleys and vast rice paddies add an extra layer of beauty to the experience. Visitors can explore the area via hiking trails and viewing platforms, where they can take in breathtaking views of the jagged pillars and surrounding landscape. It is a great place to enjoy the peace and serenity of nature and take unique photos.

A beautiful New Year's day exploring and watching wildlife along the Burnt River Canyon
A beautiful winter day exploring and a little wildlife watching along the Burnt River Canyon between Durkee and Unity in Baker County Oregon .
The Burnt River Canyon near Durkee is always one of our favorite drives for taking in the majestic scenery of Eastern Oregon and watching wildlife along the way. Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep this trip and a napping Barn Owl

Luosto is a scenic tourist destination located in the heart of Lapland, Finland. It is particularly popular for its beautiful natural environment, with extensive forests, hills and impressive scenery that attracts visitors in both winter and summer. Luosto is located in the middle of the rugged Lapland landscape. In winter, the forests are covered with a thick layer of snow and offer excellent opportunities for activities such as skiing, snowmobile tours and husky rides. The Pyhä-Luosto National Park is known for its spectacular fjells mountains and untouched nature. Hiking trails lead to the top of the Pyhä-Luosto Fjell, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness. Luosto is also home to one of the world's only active amethyst mines. Visitors can participate in guided tours and look for amethyst stones themselves, a unique and fun experience. Luosto is an excellent location to see the Northern Lights, especially during the cold winter evenings when the sky is clear. The dancing lights are a magical spectacle that attracts many visitors. In addition to winter sports in Luosto, there are also cozy restaurants and accommodations to enjoy the local cuisine and relax after a day full of adventure. Luosto is a destination that will appeal to nature lovers and adventurers alike, offering a unique combination of Arctic wilderness and exciting outdoor activities. It is an ideal place to enjoy the peace and beauty of Lapland, away from the hustle and bustle of urban areas.
Luosto is a well-known tourist destination in Lapland, Finland, situated in the municipality of Sodankylä. It is celebrated for its stunning natural surroundings, winter activities, and the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We set out early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. In Lapland, the colors of the sky during sunrise and sunset can be very intense due to the low position of the sun on the horizon. The long twilight periods can produce unique colors in the sky, including green hues, due to various scattering effects of sunlight. Our adventure starts at the secluded hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien in Luosto. In Finland, traditional wooden houses are often referred to as "wooden cabins" or "wooden chalets." The Finnish word for a wooden house is puutalo. We are walking on the ridge of fjells Ukko-Luosto along the primeval forest in the area. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature here in Luosto appears to be in a deep winter slumber. .
Pleasants Valley Road, one of my favorite places in northern California. There were many old wooden barns along the drive, and dirt side roads framed by beautiful old growth oak trees. The golden yellow grass you see here is one of the reasons California is called the Golden State (besides the Gold Rush, of course). Sadly this grass color is due to dry conditions, and - coupled with hot, dry winds - it expoded into wildfire in August, 2022: The so-called "Pleasants" fire destroyed everything in its path, including homes and the highly-flammable wood of old rustic barns. Some people were injured, and livestock were lost. It was heartbreaking seeing it from the first fire reports. Some of my brother and sister firefighters responded hundreds of miles to help fight that fire and numerous others in the area.

Sighnaghi, located in Georgia’s wine region of Kakheti, is known as the “City of Love” for its romantic atmosphere, colorful houses, and breathtaking views over the Alazani Valley and the distant Caucasus Mountains. The town is surrounded by centuries-old defensive walls with watchtowers, built in the 18th century by King Erekle II to protect it from invasions. Today, it’s a lively destination with charming cobbled streets, traditional restaurants, and a rich winemaking culture that goes back more than 8,000 years. In this photo, you see a quintessential view of Sighnaghi: picturesque houses with red rooftops, elegant wooden balconies, and the distinctive church towers rising in the distance. In the foreground, bright flowers and ivy add warmth and color, blending beautifully with the historic charm of the town. This serene moment was captured early in the morning at our Abramichi Guest House. The town is still quiet, and a delicious breakfast awaits on the terrace above, overlooking this postcard-perfect scenery.
In the early morning light, Sighnaghi reveals its charm with the St. Stephen church towers, red rooftops, and lush gardens. From the peaceful garden of Abramichi Guest House, breakfast awaits on the terrace above, offering a serene start in Georgia’s romantic City of Love.

A backcountry road in Northern California, at the right time of day for shadows. Pleasant Valley Road; a beautiful drive. www.google.com/maps/place/Pleasant+Valley+Rd,+California/...
This is a place where other photographers might 'set-up': Camera(s) on tripod, slowing-down while watching the subtle changes in light as the sun sets to the west >>> . I guess my wanting to keep exploring, to see new places, gets the best of me, and instead I keep moving!
Follow the Little Dog for adventure. Just because he is tiny, doesn't mean he isn't mighty.
We got our long hike in on Thursday as we are going back into a super deep freeze this weekend.
On our round about adventure we covered 4 miles! Found many places were ice was forming and discovered all sorts of visually amazing places.
:)
Glad we didn't wait!

Only 45 minutes from the main island of Venice, Burano is often mixed up (by tourists) with Murano, famous for its glassware.
The crowd is practically non-existent - no jostling, and its big enough that you won't run into any big tourist groups. I'm guessing this is because it takes a little longer to get here.
The colors are amazing, and there are some pretty good restaurants.
Definitely on the "once in a lifetime" list.

The subject of this piece is a rural barn, genuinely abandoned and left to the whims of nature. Briefly, the story goes that the main farmhouse was last lived in dating back to the 1980's. There were several other barns and outbuildings on the property, this small barn was just one of them.
My friend and fellow photographer John Vose had a lead on this place, and was able to secure permission to enter the old farmstead for the purpose of capturing artistic rustic details and portraits of the buildings inside and out. This being one of them.
On my website, this piece is titled "Autumn In Retrospect". I also have a square format version using a slightly different image file composition that is a popular selling print.

Dusk light over Civita di Bagnoregio, situated on top of a hill in the valley of the badlands (Valle dei Calanchi), in Viterbo province, Lazio region, central Italy.
Civita di Bagnoregio was founded by the Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago. It was, for a time, part of the Etruscan's principle route to Rome. Nowadays it is famously known as "the dying city" due to the progressive erosion of the foundation beneath the town.

Our hike towards Anteni opens here into a wide panorama filled with autumn colors. The slopes of the Šar massif unfold in layered waves — rust-brown, deep orange and golden yellow — interwoven with dark bands of conifer forest. The light softens the contours of the landscape, allowing the mountains to merge almost painterly into one another. On the right side of the image, just visible between the rolling flanks, lie a few houses of the mountain village of Vešala – Вешала. The village sits high in the mountains, close to the border with Kosovo, and forms one of the most remote settlements in this part of the Šar range. Vešala has only a handful of permanent residents; many of the houses today are mainly used in summer by families returning to their native region. Historically, Vešala was a shepherd’s village. For generations, families lived here from livestock farming, with flocks of sheep moving higher into the mountains during the summer months. Its isolated location has preserved the village’s authentic character. Narrow mountain roads wind their way up to it, and in winter it can be cut off for days by heavy snowfall. That remoteness is something you feel in this landscape as well: no traffic, no development — only space. The valley below reveals how small human presence truly is here. A few houses set against the vast immensity of the mountains. The contrast between nature and settlement gives the image its strength: autumn dominates, the mountains define the scale, and Vešala lies there quietly, almost hidden — a modest reminder that people have lived here for centuries, in harmony with the rhythm of the seasons. Up here, there is no rush. Only layers of color, silence in the valley, and the awareness that this landscape is greater than ourselves.
A panoramic view across the autumn-colored slopes of the Šar Mountains in North Macedonia. Layers of rust, gold and deep green roll through the valley, with the small mountain village of Vešala (Вешала) just visible on the right, near the border with Kosovo.
