A beautiful New Year’s Day exploring the Burnt River Canyon and watching wildlife between Durkee and Unity in Baker County Oregon with lots of Bighorn Sheep out to help us ring in the new year.
The Burnt River Canyon near Durkee is always one of our favorite drives for taking in the majestic scenery of Eastern Oregon and watching wildlife along the way. Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep in rut during this trip

The subject of this piece is a rural barn, genuinely abandoned and left to the whims of nature. Briefly, the story goes that the main farmhouse was last lived in dating back to the 1980's. There were several other barns and outbuildings on the property, this small barn was just one of them.
My friend and fellow photographer John Vose had a lead on this place, and was able to secure permission to enter the old farmstead for the purpose of capturing artistic rustic details and portraits of the buildings inside and out. This being one of them.
On my website, this piece is titled "Autumn In Retrospect". I also have a square format version using a slightly different image file composition that is a popular selling print.

The ancient, raw bones of the earth lay bare across the Sylvia Grinnell flood plain. Here, glacial remnants and massive granite boulders stand like silent sentinels, their weathered faces catching the sharp, brilliant angles of the northern sun. Spent the day watching the seasons change in Eastern Oregon, with big dramatic skies. Lots of baby calves beginning to arrive on the nearby ranches, and while it’s a little early for spring migration still but spotted a few fun birds including lots of Red Tail Hawks and several nesting great horned owls.

Aerial view of the Katskhi pillar, a huge natural limestone monolith that rises 131 feet into the air, with a small church on the top, overlooking the river valley of Katskhura, situated at the village of Katskhi in Imereti region, western Georgia.
The church on top of the pillar was built in the 6th to 8th centuries, dedicated to Maximus the Confessor, a famous Christian monk and theologian. It is commonly regarded as one of the most isolated churches in the world. There's also a burial chamber, a wine cellar, three hermit cells and a curtain wall.
Each day, monks living below make the nerve-jangling 20-minute ascent via a thin metal ladder bolted to the side of the rock. The daily pilgrimage to say prayers at the top is said to bring them closer to God.

Our hike towards Anteni opens here into a wide panorama filled with autumn colors. The slopes of the Šar massif unfold in layered waves — rust-brown, deep orange and golden yellow — interwoven with dark bands of conifer forest. The light softens the contours of the landscape, allowing the mountains to merge almost painterly into one another. On the right side of the image, just visible between the rolling flanks, lie a few houses of the mountain village of Vešala – Вешала. The village sits high in the mountains, close to the border with Kosovo, and forms one of the most remote settlements in this part of the Šar range. Vešala has only a handful of permanent residents; many of the houses today are mainly used in summer by families returning to their native region. Historically, Vešala was a shepherd’s village. For generations, families lived here from livestock farming, with flocks of sheep moving higher into the mountains during the summer months. Its isolated location has preserved the village’s authentic character. Narrow mountain roads wind their way up to it, and in winter it can be cut off for days by heavy snowfall. That remoteness is something you feel in this landscape as well: no traffic, no development — only space. The valley below reveals how small human presence truly is here. A few houses set against the vast immensity of the mountains. The contrast between nature and settlement gives the image its strength: autumn dominates, the mountains define the scale, and Vešala lies there quietly, almost hidden — a modest reminder that people have lived here for centuries, in harmony with the rhythm of the seasons. Up here, there is no rush. Only layers of color, silence in the valley, and the awareness that this landscape is greater than ourselves.

De hellingen van het Šar-massief golven in lagen over elkaar heen — roestbruin, dieporanje en goudgeel — afgewisseld met donkere stroken naaldbos. Het licht verzacht de contouren van het landschap, waardoor de bergen bijna schilderachtig in elkaar overvloeien. Rechts in het beeld, net zichtbaar tussen de glooiende flanken, liggen een paar huizen van het bergdorpje Vešala - Вешала. Het dorp ligt hoog in de bergen, vlak bij de grens met Kosovo, en vormt één van de meest afgelegen nederzettingen in dit deel van het Šar-gebergte. Vešala telt slechts een handvol permanente bewoners; veel huizen worden tegenwoordig vooral in de zomer gebruikt door families die terugkeren naar hun geboortestreek. Historisch was Vešala een herdersdorp. Generaties lang leefden families hier van veeteelt, met kuddes schapen die ’s zomers hoger de bergen in trokken. Een paar huizen tegen de enorme uitgestrektheid van de bergen. Het contrast tussen natuur en nederzetting maakt het beeld krachtig: de herfst domineert, de bergen bepalen de schaal, en Vešala ligt daar stil en bijna verborgen — als een bescheiden herinnering dat hier al eeuwen mensen leven, in harmonie met het ritme van de seizoenen. Hierboven is geen haast. Alleen lagen van kleur, stilte in het dal en de wetenschap dat dit landschap groter is dan wijzelf.

We are staying at Hotel Scardus in Popova Šapka, high in the Šar Mountains National Park. The village is scattered across the slopes, with chalets, a mosque, and winding roads climbing through the fir trees. In autumn, the forests glow in shades of gold, rust, and deep green — a soft contrast to the rugged peaks above. These images show the open alpine meadows around the village, the rolling ridges, and rocky outcrops that rise like natural viewpoints above the valley. At around 1,780 meters, the mountain atmosphere begins immediately. The higher you walk, the wider the panorama becomes, with layers of mountains fading into blue and grey on the horizon. The region is not only visually impressive but also rich in wildlife. The Šar massif is home to bears, wolves, and lynx, though they are rarely seen. Chamois move gracefully across the steep slopes, while eagles and other birds of prey circle high above the ridges. In the lower forests, woodpeckers can be heard, and occasionally a fox or wild boar slips quietly through the undergrowth. That awareness — that this is not just scenery but a living ecosystem — adds depth to every walk. Here, you are not simply crossing a landscape; you are moving through habitat. And that is what makes Popova Šapka and the Šar Mountains National Park feel truly wild and authentic.

We verblijven in Hotel Scardus in Popova Šapka, hoog in het Šar Mountains National Park. Het dorp ligt verspreid over de hellingen, met chalets, een moskee en kleine wegen die tussen de sparren omhoog kronkelen. In de herfst kleuren de bossen goud, roestbruin en diepgroen — een zacht contrast met de ruige toppen erboven. Deze foto’s tonen de open bergweiden rond het dorp, de glooiende kammen en de rotsrichels die als natuurlijke uitkijkpunten boven het dal hangen. Vanaf hier beginnen de wandelroutes vrijwel direct. Juist dat besef — dat dit geen decor is, maar een levend ecosysteem — geeft elke wandeling extra diepte. Hier stap je niet alleen door een landschap, maar door leefgebied. Dat maakt Popova Šapka en het Šar Mountains National Park tot een plek waar natuur nog echt ruimte heeft.

The province of Nan is located in the north of Thailand and borders Laos. It is one of the lesser known provinces of Thailand, but is known for its natural beauty, rich culture and ancient history. It's a great place to visit if you're looking for adventure and relaxation in nature. Road 1256 passes through the mountains of Nan and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding nature. Almost the most beautiful road in Thailand, the view on the side of the road is very beautiful, if you go during the rainy season, the atmosphere will be very good. You can see the green along the two sides of the road on the ridge. In some parts you can see the beautiful view of rice fields over the hills. It may be overgrown on some parts of the road. There are several interesting sights and activities to enjoy along the way. It's great for bird watching, camping, and hiking, and you're unlikely to meet many other people while exploring. You can also visit the Doi Phu Kha National Park, which is known for its beautiful waterfalls, lush forests and spectacular views. Wonderfully cool weather all year round. In addition, there are also several hill tribe villages along the way, where you have the chance to experience the local culture and traditions.
Thailand is home to several beautiful national parks that showcase the country's diverse natural beauty. The Doi Phu Kha National Park is located near the border between Thailand and Laos. The National Park is also home to the highest mountain peak and beautiful waterfalls. Sapan Waterfall, also known as Mae Charim Waterfall, is a beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush green mountains and lush natural landscapes. The waterfall is located deep in the mountains and is surrounded by lush tropical jungle, making for an enchanting landscape. The waterfall consists of several levels, with water flowing down large rock formations. Each tier of the waterfall offers great views and swimming opportunities. The sound of running water and the fresh mountain air create a serene and tranquil environment where you can relax and enjoy the natural beauty. To reach the waterfall, you must follow a path that winds through the lush jungle. It can be an adventurous journey, but the reward of reaching the waterfall is totally worth it. Along the way, enjoy the region's abundant flora and fauna, including exotic birds and wildlife. If you want to experience the beauty of nature and take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Sapan Waterfall in Nan Province, Thailand is a great destination to visit.
