This is the offshore Princess Amalia Wind Farm (Prinses Amaliawindpark in Dutch) in the Dutch exclusive economic zone of the North Sea. Prior to its official opening on June 4th 2008, it was known as the Q7 Wind Farm. It’s the second offshore wind farm in the Netherlands (in 2017 there are 4 off shore wind farms).

The wind farm lies approximately 23 km west of the village of Egmond aan Zee, in the North Sea. It consists of 60 Vestas V80 2 MW wind turbines. That results in an installed capacity of 120 MW – maximum or peak capacity that is. The wind turbines can supply approximately 435 GWh of electricity each year, which is enough to power 125,000 households. With this wind farm 225,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions are avoided annually.

Each turbine rests on steel monopile foundation in water with depths of 19 to 24 meters. The monopile or steel tower has a diameter of about 4 meters at its base and a length over 50 meters. The rotor hub sits 60 meters above sea level and the blades are 40 meters long. The whole construction weighs 320 tonnes and is driven 30 meters into the seabed.

Technical stuff

This time this part is a bit boring, as this photo almost comes straight out of the camera. I converted the RAW file with PS CC. I further fiddled a little with the curves tool and balanced the toning.

It's now almost exactly 2 months since we moved back to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and San Francisco seems a lifetime ago! This was shot at the Sutro Baths, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The interesting offshore rock formations and abandoned structures coupled with SF's foggy/cloudy weather make this a fantastic spot for long exposure photography. I had a pretty productive outing here 2 months ago so I should have a couple more images to come.

We're still nowhere near settled but we're getting there and I'm just starting to get back into shooting again. I hope to have some new, local material shortly! Hope you're all doing well!

A small, gray, foggy marine layer hovers offshore as the setting sun lights up the clouds. We are standing on a bluff above Pfeiffer Beach.

A marine layer is a thermal inversion formed when warm air from the land settles on top of the cold ocean water. The surface air is cooled by the water, becomes denser than the air above it, and is thus trapped, often producing fog within the marine layer. This bit of inconvenient meteorology is the bane of photographers along the Pacific coast during summer months.
