The main hall of the Westfield World Trade Center, known as the Oculus, is a bright, cathedral-like space with soaring white ribbed arches and marble floors. Inside, you’ll find multiple levels of shops, cafés, and restaurants, all set around a vast open concourse that also serves as a transit hub connecting to the PATH trains, NYC Subway, and the World Trade Center complex.

Gare du World Trade Center - Subway's WTC station

Greetings! This is my first ever attempt at a photo a day marathon. I've been encouraged by Rod and Jen, and hopefully I can keep it up. This pic was taken at the Woodford Folk Festival, inside a bamboo structure. No filters or editing.

World Trade Center Station (PATH), Manhattan, New York, USA

Oculus is the name of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. The structure was designed by Santiago Calatrava and inaugurated in 2016, becoming the new definitive hub station of the financial district after the 11th September attacks. Inside the Oculus the light is really special, soft and almost ethereal.

The Oculus is home to 12 subway lines, the World Trade Centre station, and dozens of retailers, serving over a million people every week.

The main floor bustles with commuters, shoppers, and visitors, plus weekly programs, from farmers' markets and art exhibits to musical performances and retail events.

The Oculus as access points across the entire 16-acre World Trade Centre campus and is owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The Oculus was positioned as part of the World Trade Center masterplan by Daniel Libeskind and designed by Santiago Calatrava. The structure’s white metal-clad steel ribs reach up and out in a monumental move symbolic of a hand releasing a dove.

The structure's orientation serves as a lasting reminder of the attacks of September 11, 2001. It is in alignment with the sun’s solar angles on each September 11, from 8:46 am, when the first plane struck, until 10:28 am, when the second tower collapsed. Its central skylight fits this alignment and washes the Oculus floor with a beam of light.

Architect Calatrava's Oculus

The Oculus is the centerpiece of The World Trade Center Transportation Hub. After 12 years of construction and constant delays, it finally opened to the public on March 3, 2016. Designed by famed Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the $4 billion building exceeded the original estimate by 100%! In total, the WTC Oculus is 350 feet long and measures about 75,000 square feet of retail space

The Oculus, World Trade Centre, New York

----

The Oculus stands as a pivotal element within the visionary framework of the World Trade Center masterplan, envisioned by Daniel Libeskind and brought to life through the architecture of Santiago Calatrava. Its striking form, characterized by the interplay of white metal-clad steel ribs, ascends skyward in a gesture reminiscent of a hand releasing a dove.

Beyond its aesthetic significance, the orientation of the Oculus carries profound symbolism, serving as an enduring tribute to the events of September 11, 2001. Aligned with the solar angles of the sun on that day, from the initial impact at 8:46 am to the collapse of the second tower at 10:28 am.

Hope you have all been well. I’m still catching up...!
