It's that time of year agin, the cider apple crop was good despite the very dry summer. We are back at work creating our award-winning cider again.

The guests at holiday cottages are now greeted by "Derrick" here

Still very, very rusty having not picked my camera up for a few years properly! Do bare with....I'm sure I'll get my mojo back 👍

This is a bit more like it - muuuuch happier with this shot. To me this shot is about sharp focusing and good control of light without light being the subject (which it was yesterday).

I started off with a wider composition using a bone china dish as a tea caddy but the composition I had in my mind didn't even remotely work through the viewfinder so I very quickly found myself swapping to my macro lens and getting in close.

This was shot at a fairly extreme f/36 because I wanted to get good sharp focusing front to back and I'm pretty happy that I managed that with only the leaves at the very back losing sharpness. This was side lit with a diffused SB-900 on full power to combat the small aperture and the same desk lamp that caused me so many problems yesterday. At first I was only using the desk lamp to aid focusing and switching it off to take the shot but eventually I started leaving it on and dropping the shutter speed to bring in some ambient light which warmed the image up a bit and gave a more even lighting across the image. Lastly I had a small reflector positioned below the lens to bounce some light into the area just left of centre. The desk lamp was softened a bit using a white plastic bag which I could only leave on briefly whilst I fired the shutter due to the heat of the lamp ;).

I like this shot and I particularly like texture in the surface of the left most half.

A new era of whimsical up-cycling: a Damascus barrelled hammer gun desk lamp from one of my favourite collaborators. Absolutely love it. Deactivated 19th century 12 bore shotgun with solid beech wood base. I specially commissioned it for a friend's 50th birthday present.

Friday. The boy returned from his first proper long-stay away from home. He had "the time of his life" at a Dartmoor outdoor activity centre.

A very busy day yesterday and no time (or inclination) for photography. However the reflections from the glass on the wall, and the blind cords in the mirror caught my attention. Turned into 'moonlight' in processing.

Bit of a tenuous description for the reason for this shot.

Anyway - its the 4th shot for October 2012.

The two 2's in the time added together make 4 for the day..

The 10 - well thats 10 for the month...

The needle on the rev-counter goes from 8 to 20 - the difference being 12 for the year....

Told you it was tenuous !!!

Out walking today I came across this puss that came through some railings to meet me. It was really friendly and accepted my fussing and coo cooing, but aloof enough not to follow me when I stopped.

Not much time for photography today so just a quick still life photo of a Chrysanthemum flower from the garden.

One week in before I've had to resort to a late-night last-minute shot! I'm sure it won't be the last this month either.

27 October. My friend James does love to make sure the children are properly entertained at their annual Halloween Party. This year an unfortunate alien had crashed in the garden and suffered the consequences!

The issue with doing a 365 and the October challenge is the need to take two pictures a day! Not helped by my Macbook being crippled byan idiotic OSX "upgrade" yesterday!

I contacted the Essex Chronicle news desk and met up with one of their people - and gave them a couple of my shots and guess what they have published one of them along with the story and some quotes from myself - I also got my name against my picture as well !!!!

My picture is the main one at the top !!

It was a really tough decision today as to what to post for my final image, but I went with this one in the end. Thank you to Julian for inviting me to participate and to everyone else in the a-photo-a-day group who liked, commented and favourited my images ;) Hope to see you all again in April ....

6 October. It was beautiful at the beach this morning. This intrepid bather went for an early October swim in the sea.

A quick walkabout our garden reveled a treasure trove of fungi.

Top left: Purple Jelly-disc or Jelly-cup - one I'd never seen before.

Top right: Honey Fungus

Bottom right: Sulphur Tufts

Bottom left: Hairy Curtain Crust (?) & Smoky Polypore on a felled/dead beech tree

I wouldn't dream of trying to identify or even eat any of these. We have an estate forager for that! He takes our cottage guests out and about on foraging walks.

Yesterday I found an un-checked Euro Millions Lottery ticket from 27th July 2012, when I typed the numbers into the online checker I found that I had won the princely sum of £2.80 !!!!

Well today as soon as the local shop opened I was in there like a rat up a drain pipe to collect my winnings.

Despite a dire weather forecast, the day actually ended up quite nice. Took a walk before dinner. Despite appearances this is not a cloud, it's steam from the power station which has been working flat out today.

Shot taken for the Photo-a-day-for-a-month group . This is my photo for 18th October

Living directly on a flight path I no longer photograph planes anymore unless something special comes in and I just happen to be in the garden, or if something comes in at a different angle. Today this helicopter came in at a different angle and quite low so I gave it a bit of my attention. This is the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

Another day of sport photos

Took at little bag out on my walk today and brought home a few bits to photograph. Not the best specimens, but was keen to photograph my new little vases.

Noticed a new bud poking through the leaf above it today. Sort of reminds me of a seahorse.

The Rookery is not so far away, and several times a day they fly above my house, headed for the fields for a peck around. Here they are taking a moment, mid-way between the rookery and the field in the late afternoon sun.

I didn't know Marion Smith (1947-2020) but this is her memorial bench in Queens Park Loughborough. Amongst other things she was a keen bee keeper, chair of Loughborough in bloom, an international athlete and a councillor at the Borough Council. The pigeons seem to like her bench, I think perhaps park visitors are putting food there.

2 October.... and it's raining, there's always a macro shot to fall-back on, and my 'other job' as a bespoke jewellery designer and photographer. Now who wants to buy this beautiful sapphire and diamond ring?!
