Greenwood Cemetery

5200 Canal Street

New Orleans, Louisiana

Greenwood Cemetery was established by the Firemen’s Charitable & Benevolent Association in 1852. Numerous fraternal organizations joined the Volunteer Firemen and Elks in providing memorials to their deceased members. Multivault tombs preserve the history of these organizations and the contributions of their members to New Orleans. The Police Mutual Benevolent Association, the Swiss Society, and the New Orleans Typographical Union are fine examples at Greenwood. The typographical union, formed in 1855, was the first labor union in the region.

This series of photos was taken at the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum in Rantoul, Illinois. I chose to take pictures of fragments of the planes because trying to fit an entire plane into the frame of a camera is pretty hard, especially within the confines of a crowded hangar.

The museum was wonderful! It is housed in what used to be the Chanute Air Force base, which was operational from 1917 to 1993. There are over 40 planes there, as well as numerous flight simulators (nonfunctional, but still cool to see), an exhibit highlighting the 99th Pursuit Squadron (the first active unit of the Tuskegee Airmen), and four Minuteman ICBM maintenance training silos. In fact, until its decommission in 1993, the Air Force used Chanute for all of its Minuteman missile maintenance training. There was a lot of other stuff that I'm forgetting, but if you get a chance, go visit, it's absolutely worth your time.

25th July 2014 at Bush Hall, London W12.

Country: United States - Texas. Style: Americana & Bluegrass.

Lineup: Sarah Jarosz (v/octave mandolin/mandolin/banjo/g), Alex Hargreaves (violin), Nathaniel Smith (cello/v).

Sarah Jarosz is from Wimberley (near Austin), TX, studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA and currently lives in NYC. Now 23, she started making an impact on the Texas music scene by appearing on the stage at Old Settlers Music Festival aged 11. Initially concentrating on Bluegrass, she has been increasingly open to other styles of music. The other musicians in her band are Alex Hargreaves, from Oregon and now resident in NYC, and Nathaniel Smith, from Mississippi and relocated to Nashville. I took photos of Jarosz with Damien O’Kane at the 2013 Celtic Connections Festival Club (to view click on the tag of her name).

In this photo: Jarosz plays a guitar shaped Octave Mandolin.
