A little detail which I found this afternoon while walking at Hoe Mill Lock. Ref: D1111-027

Derek Watkins, far right, observes his mother, Ila, far left, speaking with Brittany Weatherford, who picks up her little sisters, Candace, centered, and MaKayla Jenkins, lower right, with her daughter Alexus, bottom center. Weatherford always picks up her younger sisters, but this is the last time because they have decided to start home schooling. This will leave only six students enrolled at Shedd Academy.

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, which was first recorded to have been observed by Freedmen (freed enslaved southern blacks) in Charleston, South Carolina in 1865, at the Washington Race Course, to remember the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. The recognition of the fallen victims was then enacted under the name Memorial Day by an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War. Over time, it was extended after World War I to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. Now known as Memorial Day, it is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

24th Annual Chariot festival of Sri Mayurapathy Paththirakaali temple is held today (6th of August 2011) in Colombo amidst heavy downpour. Five wooden carved chariots parade through the streets of Bambalapitty (Colombo 04) and Wellawatte (Colombo 06).

Devotees dressed elegantly and took part in religious rituals such as carrying clay pots of camphor, rolling themselves on the ground, smashing coconuts and hanging on hooks (Kaavadi ~ Men only). Few devotees who fulfill their vows, got into trance and danced on the streets. Devotional songs played throughout the dazzling parade. Traditional and non ~ traditional musical instruments added colour to the festival

Ominous sky indeed! Stormy skies were observed just to the south. This was a thunderstorm that had produced decent lightning, along with copious amounts of hail! Pic taken from San Jose, CA.

Certainly, February 2015 was ending with a bang, weather-wise for the Bay Area! A low pressure system that had originated from the Canadian coast had ushered strong instability in the atmosphere. T-storms had developed around the region. During the morning hours, storm clouds were already towering due to the unstable airmass. By early afternoon, things really started ramping up. Thanks to the afternoon heating, t-storms erupted. Even one had formed just south of my area! I watched and observed the t-storm intensify. Thunder and lightning proceeded with constant rumbles of thunder. My adrenaline rush had skyrocketed. I had parked around Fowler Creek Park to observe the storm. The lightning, thunder, rain and hail continued before diminishing after 3 p.m. My storm-loving self has been satisfied!

Weather scenario and summary:

A cold low pressure system had ushered atmospheric instability on February 28, 2015, causing strong convective scattered t-storm development all over the Bay Area. The region had observed hail, heavy rain, thunder and lightning...the whole shebang! A t-storm had even dumped LOTS of hail in an isolated area around South San Jose, making the affected area look like it was dusted with snow! The low that had brought the wild weather to the Bay Area had weakened as it slowly headed south... It was certainly a crazy day weather-wise for the Bay Area on the last day of February!

Various animals at the zoo do like to observe people watching them, even when they sit down they still like to be watching rather than turn their backs. Curiosity in big cats too?

Once again the common name treefrog is a misnomer for this species on tepui summits. Tepuihyla edelcae is **very** rarely encountered in trees and only occasionally observed off the ground (only then in bromeliads or low lying shrubs).

This species is most commonly encountered calling from water at the edge of shallow ponds and marshes on the tepui summits.

One of my F/Os pointed this out to me a few weeks ago and it took me a while to get a good photo op. Look carefully at the pattern of dots in the upper right hand portion of the tail. I think it looks like four fingers with the middle one extended in that oh so familiar universal gesture, the bird!!! Or maybe it is just me!!!
