One stormy evening in the city... Very strong & gusty southerly winds & rain were observed as this strongly awaited atmospheric river/storm system’s main cold front made ‘landfall’ in the Bay Area. This was indeed the strongest storm so far this season for the region. Conditions outside looked like a tropical storm! Certainly, this was a stormy night for the region. The Sierras were also looking at feet of snowfall before all this is said & done. This evening was just the 1st part of the storm. More heavy rain & wind was in store for the state over the next day or two as this atmospheric river was forecast to inch back north towards the South Bay the very next day... Things would finally die down by Friday. Stay safe out there, everyone! (Video taken Tuesday late evening, January 26, 2021)
*Weather forecast/update: A strong Pacific storm, or atmospheric river, was expected to bring periods of moderate to heavy rain to the region. This system was forecast to arrive by Tuesday (Jan 26) & was to bring periods of heavy rain & high winds. This will likely result in an increased risk of mudslides over steep terrain, debris flow over wildfire burned areas, as well as localized ponding of water in low-lying areas. Up to 3 inches of rain was expected in urban areas & 3-7 inches possible over higher terrain. The entire area from Napa south thru Monterey & San Benito Counties would get a good soaking from this atmospheric river. Latest model guidance suggests the coastal slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains & Big Sur look to be the primary target of the heaviest rain. On top of this, a high wind watch was also in effect during the period. South winds 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50-60 mph are possible. North Bay, San Francisco Bay Shoreline, East Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains, and the South Bay will all be affected. Timing of the strongest winds are forecast to happen Tuesday evening thru Wednesday morning as this strong system’s cold front sweeps thru. Damaging winds can blow down trees & power lines which may result in power outages… Stay tuned to the latest forecast for the most up-to-date weather info online…

I was invited by my friend Jos to tag along with his photoshoot at the Latin Deluxe Salsa dancing event by Salsa Contigo in CCOG eventspace in Duiven. It was my chance to try event photography without too much pressure, enjoy some salsa music and do something I had not done before, shooting fast-moving dancers in low light.
Lessons learned:
- Shoot with (bounced) flash and slow shutter speeds to freeze movement and show motion at the same time.
- Talk with orga and demand to be kept up-to-date on schedules and key moments
- Don't Panic.
The nature and pace of climate changes being observed today and the consequences projected by consensus scientific opinion are serious and pose severe risks for our national security. The CNA Military Advisory Board (MAB), a group of more than a dozen admirals and generals from all four branches of the U.S. military, first published a report on these threats in 2007. After nearly a decade of advances in scientific understanding and slow, or in many cases non-existent, reactions to projected changes, the MAB felt compelled to provide an update.
A strong call for action has been issued with the newly released 5th IPCC report, which illustrates the high environmental and security risks imposed by climate change. This call for action extends to the role of demographers in anticipating how climate change will interact with demographic factors such as population growth, women’s empowerment, age-structure, migration, and urbanization. At the same time, it’s important to address the population, environment, and security implications of extreme weather events and climate variability. Join us in a discussion with leading researchers to identify the critical questions and gaps in understanding what needs to be addressed, and how a population perspective can contribute to the development of effective adaptation strategies in Africa.

Warrior Country observes annual Warrior Friendship Week April 13 - 17 on Camp Casey with robust weeklong athletic competition, ceremonies, and events highlighting Korean culture. The week's activities included, among others, unit competition in basketball, relay races, tug-of-war; traditional Korean wrestling known as ssireum, and joku, a Korean national sport that combines elements of soccer and volleyball. South Korea's Ministry of National Defense Honor Guard performed precision rifle drill and demonstrations of traditional Korean dance and Chosun-era swordsmanship. The week ended Friday with several important ceremonies, among them the Area I Commander's Cup Awards presentations, followed by awards to the Area I Better Opportunities for Single (and unaccompanied) Soldiers (BOSS) program, then a closing ceremony at which trophies and other forms of recognition were given to winners of the week's various competitions. April 4 is annually observed as International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. In South Sudan, the world’s newest nation, landmines and explosive remnants of war continue to pose a threat to civilian lives and serve as tangible reminders of ongoing conflict. This year, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) held an event marking the Day in Juba, the country’s capital. The Secretary-General’s Special Representative for South Sudan and Head of the UN Peacekeeping mission, UNMISS, Nicholas Haysom, addressed the occasion, speaking about the ongoing support from UNMISS to the proactive, coordinated response led by its sister agency, UNMAS, in addressing this serious issue.

Shots of Warholian's studio visit with Mario Wagner.
From Gallery Heist's blog on Mario:
Imbued with a sense of cinematic intrigue and sci-fi fantasy that speaks to the era from which he draws reference, Wagner’s pieces depict a time when futuristic fascination was widespread, space travel was imminent, and the possibilities of technology were limitless.
"Observed by Clouds" will present a collection of work exploring some of the darker and more illusive narratives that have been steadily evolving in Wagner’s artistic oeuvre. As Wagner puts it, these new works "feel like the next step in a line." Dreamlike scenarios of morose pallbearers assembled in funeral formation, masked marauders on horseback full of hidden agendas, and watchful strangers with questionable intentions lurking in shadows point to mysteries that border on the eerie, begging at the viewer’s imagination and inviting him to contemplate the origins of the story’s beginning and its probable end.
