New York City’s Lincoln Center Plaza with the fountain lights set up to support Pride Month with the Metropolitan Opera House in the background. Lincoln Center actually traces it origin back to 1955 when the Robert Moses led the Mayor’s Slum Clearance Committee received the blessing to designate Lincoln Square for urban renewal. Soon after John D. Rockefeller III became the chairman of the exploratory committee and would stay on to become the first president of Lincoln Center of Performing Arts, Incorporated. #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @lincolncenter @mpbcom @kehcamera @nycurbanism @nybucketlist @nycprimeshot #omd #olympus #microfourthirds #micro43 #micro43photography

Close up of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, my favourite place in New York, hope you like it in black & white?

Brooklyn Bridge was the first fixed crossing of the East River opened in 1883. It was also the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its opening, with a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m) and a deck 127 ft (38.7 m) above mean high water. The span was originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge or the East River Bridge but was officially renamed the Brooklyn Bridge in 1915.

The Brooklyn Bridge is the southernmost of four toll-free vehicular bridges connecting Manhattan Island and Long Island, with the Manhattan, Williamsburg, and Queensboro bridges to the north. Only passenger vehicles and pedestrian and bicycle traffic are permitted. A major tourist attraction since its opening, the Brooklyn Bridge has become an icon of New York City.

The wide open and large temple Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City was built in 1873. The congregation’s origins in New York go back to 1808. When this beautiful house of worship had its final touch a 286 foot tall steeple in 1876, it was the tallest building in New York City at that time. Architect Carl Pfeiffer, a 37-year-old German émigré infused the structure’s interior with technological innovations providing cooling in the summer & heat in the winter to the congregants from sources in the basement. Captured this image of the expansive and elegant interior during an Open House New York weekend. The nearest fire station to the World Trade Center FDNY Ten House with the Tribute in Lights behind right across the street from the South Tower was severely damaged by the events of September 11, 2001. Their unit was amongst the first to arrive at the North Tower as they were literally around the block. What people who traverse the Williamsburg Bridge which connects the East Village in Manhattan to Williamsburg In Brooklyn is that it opened in 1903, it was one of the last major bridges whose design like that of other bridges prior connecting Manhattan to the outer boroughs centered around the major mode of transport at the turn of the Twentieth Century which was horse drawn carriages. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world at time of its completion and that reign lasted until 1924. When construction began in 1896 Brooklyn was an independent city, but when completed a borough of New York. As seen in this image the 310 foot truss tower design which provides an amazing amount of strength with less material as it was designed to bear the weight of trains and trolleys in addition to horse drawn carriages. - [ ] #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales #tg4 #olympustg4 @nycurbanism @nybucketlist @nycprimeshot #nycprimeshot #bridges

One of the most fascinating things to observe today in the Grand Central Terminal Main Concourse is what is above, the amazing constellation ceiling which in 1998 was restored to its original luster after years and years of smoking that occurred. The ceiling prior to that was actually brown and black, quite dismal. Though today New York City was amongst the first cities in the United States that banned cigarette smoking from almost everywhere except on the sidewalk, restaurants, bars and even parks included, when I was growing up and visited, it was hard to find a place without a smoker in close proximity. Grand Central where so many waited since 1913 for their trains was constantly filled with smoke from cigarettes and it took its toll on the artwork on the ceiling.

The ceiling or zodiac mural as it is often referred to is considered one of New York City’s most beloved works of art. The origin going back to 1912 when French pastelist and etcher Paul César Helleu created the concept with the zodiac signs from October to March. The zodiac signs that were included were Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer. In addition some other constellations like Pegasus, Orion, Triangulum and Musca are also outlined on the ceiling in gold leaf and modeled by small gold leaf stars. The background in turquoise is supposed to simulate the blue-green skies seen over Greece and South Italy between October and March. The restoration and modernization (LED’s have replaced all the old lighting) have brought this treasure back so passengers and visitors alike can view them. On a rainy cloudy day the beautiful & elegant 52-story marble tower of the Metropolitan Life or MetLife Tower located at 23rd and Madison in the Flatiron district in Manhattan across from Madison Square Park was built in 1909. The original headquarters for Metropolitan Life Insurance was built here in 1893. MetLife had become the largest insurance company and most successful insurance company in the United States by the early 1900’s, providing insurance to immigrant wage workers who had much to lose if they suffered injury or worse yet passed away on the job. In 1907 MetLife president John Rogers Hegeman commissioned architects Napoleon LeBrun and Sons to design a tower addition to be laid atop the northwest portion of the existing building. The tower was modeled after the St Mark’s Campanile in Venice and when it opened in 1909 was the world’s tallest building for 3 years until surpassed by the Woolworth building down on Park Row. Warm glow of the sun kissed light by the setting sun at the very southern tip of Manhattan in New York City at Battery Park is Welsh-born artist Mac Adams New York Korean War Veterans Memorial. The beautiful 15 foot-high black granite monument has the cut out of a Korean soldier at its center that was one of the first Korean War memorials erected in the United States dedicated in 1991. It was championed by Miguel Bach himself a decorated Korean War veteran, who help form the New York City Korean War Veterans Commission to commemorate the fallen soldiers and survivors of the war often called the “Forgotten War. The flags on one of tiers on the base are those countries which participated in the United Nations sponsored mission in Korea. Iconic Brooklyn Bridge going into Manhattan from Brooklyn. John Augustus Roebling the German Immigrant that designed the bridge designed it as he had previous structures such as Roebling Suspension Bridge over the Ohio River between Cincinnati Ohio and Covington Kentucky so it was spec’ed out to handle 6 times the intended weight with its structure. It is one of the reasons that it still remains a viable traffic channel while many of the structures that were its contemporaries during the nineteenth century are long gone while the Brooklyn Bridge remains a century and quarter after it was built.

Though the original concept Santiago Calatrava has remained for the most part intact, like everything else in the World Trade Center rebuild after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, there were changes to reduce some of the cost. The James Farley post office on 33rd Street and Eighth Avenue in Manhattan, it vast and expansive innards converted to Moynihan Train Hall, a massive train station that was part of a massive extension of the existing Pennsylvania Station Complex across the street that was spearheaded by its namesake the late great Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and finished in great part by the efforts of former Governor Andrew Cuomo who championed its completion. This image of the main façade, the Corinthian colonnade, the largest of this style in the world was completed in 1914 by the famed architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, who were responsible for designing the famed original Penn Station across the way, whose destruction in the 1960’s when Penn Central tried to divest itself of assets in a last ditch effort to save their railroad, sold it off and today is where Madison Square Garden (version 4) stands and the monolithic One Penn Plaza skyscraper led to start of the historic preservation movement in New York City that eventually Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis became one of its largest proponents. The design of lead architect William Mitchel Kendall was to echo and compliment the Beaux-Arts design of Pennsylvania Railroads grand station across the street. On the front in big bold letter etched is the saying “Neither snow nor rain nor het nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds”. A beautiful structure that now has been completely repurposed as the Moynihan Train Hall where main sorting area once was, office for tech giant Facebook and the stairs you see in this image still lead to one of the larger post offices in New York City and a delightful Postal Service Museum.

The Vessel at Hudson Yards finally reopened to the public at the end of October 2024 after three long years. I finally got a chance to visit this New York City gem for some night photography. At night, this landmark turns into something out of some futuristic, sometimes alien, science fiction dream.

New York 2022.

Walter Percy Chrysler, whose amazing career as a locomotive machinist, who purchased a locomotive in 1908 that he took apart and reassembled serval times before using it, was hired by Charles Nash of Buick part of General Motors in 1911 to use his intellect and mechanical knowhow to solve engineering & production problems. When founder William Durant returned to helm at GM in 1916 Chrysler was made president and general manager of Buick. Resigned in 1919 because of direction Durant was taking GM. Hired to rescue ailing Willys-Overland, which he did and was financially rewarded, though he failed to take it over. Then he worked with another ailing automotive company Maxwell which he would eventually acquire successfully and eventually became Chrysler Corporation. Chrysler envisioned an amazing skyscraper in New York City (he was living in Great Neck on Long Island) that would when he brought this property on 42nd Street from Coney Island developer William H. Reynold for $2 million and he hired William Van Allen to design his crowning jewel, the 1,048 foot Art Deco masterpiece with its massive 125 foot spire. The tallest building in the world until the Empire State Building opened in 1931, the lighting in the upper windows did not happen until late in the 20th century that is seen in this image captured by Grand Central Terminal. At Brooklyn’s natural highest point in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, Battle Hill in Green-Wood Cemetery is the statue which is the subject of my post today, Minerva the goddess of battle & protector of civilization which is on the Higgins’ Family tomb plot in Green-Wood Cemetery. Charles Higgins, a wealthy man who made his fortune in Brooklyn selling India Ink which filled fountain pens during his period, was irked by the Battle of Brooklyn place in history being often a footnote in the American Revolutionary War. The Battle of Brooklyn was in fact the first engagement of the rebellious Americans after the signing of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britan, the fierce standoff that occurred on Battle Hill was the only triumph for the Americans in an otherwise rather disastrous battle that left General Washington retreating to regroup for battle another day. In 1920 (144th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn) Higgins donated the plots in front of his family tombs and built the Alter of Liberty & the Minerva beautiful sculpture to pay homage to the Battle of Brooklyn’s only successful America parlay. The statue of Minerva which I’ve captured a close up of her countenance in this image with Higgins mausoleum behind it, points to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor and if stand at Minerva’s side, face the same direction she is you can see Lady Liberty clearly from this hill. New York B/N 2022.

With tensions high with Great Britan in the early 1800’s, American harbor cities like New York City constructed forts for protection against invasions from the former mother country. Southwest Battery was one of four fortifications built in New York Harbor during that period built on the rocks on the tip of Manhattan Island between 1808 & 1811 and it became headquarters of all the New York Harbor fortifications when General Joseph Bloomfield became commander of all the fortifications. The four forts kept the Brits at bay, none of Southwest Battery’s 28 canons never had occasion to fire upon the enemy. In 1817 it was named Castle Clinton after New York City Mayor, Dewitt Clinton who would later become New York Governor. Today it is the Castle Clinton National Monument part of the National Parks Service. The Met or the Metropolitan Museum of Art located is in fact actuality within a portion of Central Park on Fifth Avenue’s famous Museum Mile. This image, from my digital archives, is from 2013, not a lot has changed structurally to the main museum since then. The web splash page indicates “Over 5,000 years of art from around the world” and that not an inaccurate description of the museum’s contents. Olmstead and Vaux did plan for some type of museum in their original plans for Central Park. What would become the Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 but the first Calvert Vaux-designed wing opened in 1880, the museum grew from a singular gallery to the monumental and vast building it is today. In fact its collections are so expansive that the Met has two other locations, the Met Brewer & the Cloisters up in the northern part of Manhattan. This monumental Fifth Avenue entrance hall and façade are the design of American architect Richard Morris Hunt in the early 20th Century.
