The chapel at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City which was built in 1873. The congregation’s origins in New York go back to 1808. When this beautiful house of worship had its final touch a 286 foot tall steeple in 1876, it was the tallest building in New York City at that time. Architect Carl Pfeiffer, a 37-year-old German émigré infused the structure’s interior with technological innovations providing cooling in the summer & heat in the winter to the congregants from sources in the basement. On the northwestern shore of Governors Island in New York Harbor is the round red sandstone fortification Castle Williams name after Chief Engineer of the US Army Corps of Engineers, Lieutenant Colonel Janathan Williams. The fort was built between 1807 & 1811 part of the larger defensive system for the inner New York Harbor. It served as a prison as well during the American Civil War & afterwards and survived various plans of demolition and today is maintained by the National Parks Service. The Winter Garden Atrium at Brookfield Place formerly One Financial Center where New Yorkers and visitors alike can sit amongst palm trees adjacent (across the street) from One World Trade Center. When the horrible events of September 11, 2001 occurred and both the North & South Towers of the World Trade Center Collapsed, the debris literally blew out all the glass panes of the Atrim. It was repaired & rebuilt and reopened in 2002.
