Cloudy conditions led me to shoot using the monochrome setting on my camera. Then, I used Nikon software to maintain the camera's monochrome style. A few tweaks in NX Studio, but, basically, what I saw in my viewfinder at the time.
No grain added. This is the actual noise of the D500 at iso 400. Works for black and white I think. I am disappointed with the bokeh of the Sigma 17-70 in terms of the quality of the bokeh circles. Not evident so much here, but in my test shots of out of focus Christmas lights, the circles were full of obvious rings. Not better than the Nikon 16-80 I tried unfortunately and not as nice as I remember my old copy was. But, in other important ways, the blur is nicer--transitions, foreground and background blur.
In a portrait, I'm looking for the silence in somebody.
– Henri Cartier-Bresson
This image is from most recent trip to Cuba.
Sorry it’s been a minute since I last posted. Things in Los Angeles have been taking my attention away from posting images. That said…
I approach shooting my portraits as if they were landscapes and my landscapes as if they were portraits.
The film direct Irvin Kershner said “There's nothing more interesting than the landscape of the human face.” My goal in a portrait is to be seen through by the subject, not looked at, so I can see the entire landscape of the silence within them. For me there is nothing more satisfying photographically knowing I heard that silence and photographed the entire landscape of it. The initial observance of the elusive breath held expectant moment of time, frozen for all time.
I shot this image just before the ballerina Lilia Laura Martinez Hernandez started her series of leaps for me at sunset. Hence the shutter speed of 1/16000. I need that to freeze the motion. To capture motion with stillness. I chose the Z6III because of the amazing low to no noise at higher ISO.
I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR S85mm f/1.2 lens. 1/400 of a second ISO 2800. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection and Silver efex 7.
hia is the black and white version.

Mary Bun is a small, mostly take-out, and delivery restaurant serving asian snack food morning, noon, and night to clientele living in the condo corridor along Yonge Street south of Finch Avenue.
PATH is apparently not an acronym for anything, it is just a catchy name for an underground and above grade covered walkway in downtown Toronto. You can pretty well walk everywhere in the downtown core without coming up for air. And walk from the Union Station transit hub to the SkyDome (now called by the owner The Roger's Centre), The CN Tower and all the touristy hot spots.
A and I pose for a rare picture together. This concludes the photos from Portugal from that 2000 trip. Next up will be some pictures from Morocco, soon as I get to them.
Well, he was being supervised but in a very lackadaisical manner. The parents, peering backwards--the couple standing behind him and to the left--caught up to him just as he was about to leave the lawn area.
About as scientific a comparison between the cameras as I could do. With one added variable that might say something about the colors of the two cameras. I think the shots look pretty similar in terms of saturation and color. The D610 looks a bit brighter. But, I used the vivid picture control for the D610 shot to get something similar to the D700 shot using standard picture control.

This cottage is named the same as the railway crossing to the left on Easthampstead Rd. Although almost palatial, it may have been built for the crossing keeper dating back to when they were first manned.
I used to live fairly close by. I can remember being woken up one night as a child by a loud bang. Didn't think much more about it until I heard there had been a tragedy. The original crossing had 2 gates per side that were later changed to 2 counter-weighted barriers that allow people to drive/cycle/walk round - this may have had something to do with it.
More recently, a young lady who'd just passed her driving test drove into the barrier & was killed. Sometime later, it was supposed she'd not seen the barriers were down & lights flashing due to the early morning sun.
