What's happening today at the OXXO?
Hot Nuts are being delivered.
OXXO is a chain of convenience stores from Mexico, with over 13,000 stores across Latin America. It is the largest chain of this kind of store in Mexico.
This one is located in Tuxpan, Mexico. Like the outside of the store, when inside it is just as colourful. All kinds of artificial foods such as sweets, cakes, savoury items, coffee, soft drinks can be purchased. You'll find no fruit or fresh food whatsoever. The offerings reminded me very much of some convenience stores in Canada.
The birds were all singing in the sunshine today - but the only ones I could get close enough to were sparrows and seagulls!

March is also the time of year for Cashews. I've taken shots of them three years running now. This year our fellow diarist Mario (Insert Memory Card) has also posted the interesting and odd looking Cashew. Here's a link to my previous cashew entries. Below is my commentary from 2009 on this curious fruit.
2009 Commentary
This is a cashew fruit or cashew apple called Maranon here in Panama. More accurately this is the false fruit of the cashew tree. The true fruit is the small kidney shaped shell which hangs at the bottom of the apple. Inside this shell is the cashew nut or seed.

The apple is bursting with juice and has a very delicate skin making it unsuitable for transport which is why you will never see one in your local grocery. It has a very strong sweet aroma and taste. The pulp and juice are used in drinks, cooking and have a number of medicinal purposes.
The cashew nut is surrounded by double shells with a toxic oil between the two. The oil produces skin irritations similar to poison ivy. The outer shell must be removed and the oil washed away before roasting. The Panamanians roast the nuts in outdoor ovens to avoid inhaling the fumes. After roasting the thin paper-like inner shell can be removed. The locals then package the nuts in small plastic bags and sell them for a dollar along the side of the road. While not as plump and uniform in shape as commercially grown cashews, these nuts are a tasty treat for the drive back up the mountain.
This lovely selection of cakes were bought from a great little Lebanese shop, they were yummy, lots of nuts and lots of honey....Mmmmm..
Pumpkins are not the only thing squirrels will chew their way into. You don't even have to store them outdoors.

For my art i am making fashionable garments and accessories with scrap metals and materials, showing that
"unwanted materials do make something beautiful"...I took inspiration from the burlesque era, but put a twist to my designs so that they are edgey and couture twist on to my creations.
Here is a corset made from nuts.

Bur Acorns are nearly the same size as Ping Pong balls, the largest acorn in the USA. The Latin name best describes its size -- Quercus macrocarpa. We have two bur oak trees in our yard about 8 inches diameter, grown from acorns I planted.

Came across and old house and workshop today, a real treat, some great items to shoot, and some really lovely natural light to work from, I just had to be patient for the sun to provide the lighting but the results are well worth the wait.
