This is the mast crop of the American Beech tree. The nuts are a favored food of many wildlife species including deer, wild turkey, roughed grouse, birds, squirrels, chipmunks and other rodents.

Nuts! My oak trees were crazy this year. I'm sure they were last year as well, but for some reason I noticed it more this year. Sometimes it sounded like someone was walking on the roof, there were so many acorns falling.

AKA Hazelnut and Almond Praline. Adapted from Grace Massa Langlois' book "Grace's Sweet Life", but next time I'm going to add the nuts to the sugar instead of just pouring the sugar overtop for a more even coat.

he can't eat nuts!

I decided to give Zach Arias's all white seamless background tutorial a try and discovered that, unfortunately, in my smallish living room I just don't have enough space for full body shots. Fortunately for my friends Nuts here, his body is about 1/20th my size so he fits just right. You can check out all of my efforts on my blog.

Lighting info: 3 SB800s. One on camera left and one on camer right aimed at the background firing two stops above the correct exposure to blow out the background. One SB800 was in a Westcott Apollo Mono softbox attached to a boom hanging directly overhead of Nuts. All flashes triggered via CLS and controlled via a Nikon D80 in commander mode.

DIY: Background was made out of PVC pipes and rolled out piece of white background paper. A sheet of white tileboard was used as the reflective surface.

A collection of nuts from the California Bay Laurel (Umbellularia californica). They should be roasted to be eaten and have a flavor similar to coffee. They are also reputed to have a mild stimulant effect but this untrue.
