Adamya Chetana, today organised eco-Chetana, an event to further propagate Green Lifestyle. The event was organised at Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee sports ground in front of Yadiyur lake in Jayanagar, Bengaluru. This platform brought together a team of renowned experts who conducted targetted workshops related to practical adoption of eco-friendly green lifestyle. These workshops saw hundreds of people participating in them. The event had a number of stalls exhibiting and selling related products and services like organic produce, natural food products, clothes, bags, soaps, etc. Hundreds of people were seen milling around inspecing and buying these green lifestyle goods.

The event started at 9:30 AM with invocation and Shri Ram pooja, a welcome address by a 4th standard student Kumari Neha and inauguration by Shri AnanthKumar, Chief Patron of Adamya Chetana and Hon’ble Union Minsiter for Parliamentary Affairs and Chemicals & Fertilisers.

Along with Shri AnantKumar, Dr Tejaswini AnanthKumar, many other dignitaries including Dr. Khader, Shri Sadashiv, Shri Dhanaraj, Smt Pratibha Dhanaraj ,Shri NT ramesh, Shri Anand Hosur, Shri Anilkumar and many corporators were present.

We started ZERO garbage kitchen and fossil free fuel cooking at Adamya Chetana 7-8 years back. But that is not enough. We want to spread these practices to many others said Dr. Tejaswini, Chair Person of Adamya Chetana when introducing Adamya Chetan on why she organised eco-Chetana.

“Expert doctors cite lifestyle as priamry cause for current day rise in deseases including cancer, diabetes, kidney related deseases. And food plays an important role. It is critical to go back to a green lifestyle of Shri Ram, who is believed to have used millets, fruits and vegetables during his Vana vas” said AnanthKumar.

This was followed by an insightful session on Importance of Millets by the renowned health specialist Dr. Khader.

“Wrong food, wrong environment cause deceases and destroy the environment. 1 kg sugar needs 18000 l of water! Eat right, sleep right. On this day of Ramanavami, the Rama-Bana for all deceases is millets.

And if we switch to millets, we can feed 4 worlds and if we continue to eat what we eat, we need 4 worlds to feed us. Give up tea, coffee, milk, rice, wheat, eggs, meat for good health and to save environment@ said Dr. Khader.

After this, the workshops and demonstartions that people were eagerly waiting for started off. Adamya Chetana had organised both online and in-person pre-registrations for the event, where hundreds of peole had regsitered their interest in participating.

Terrace Gardening workshop by Dr. Rajendra Hegde demonstrated simple techniques of groowing our own food in small spaces – be it houses or apartments. People were keen to understand which seeds to use, best pots or containers to use, soil/compost to utilise, providing water and sunlight, avoiding pests, etc.

Zero Garbage Home Composting workshops by Smt Vani Murthy talked about how practical tips to be used by small and large kitchens cto reduce or elimiate producing garbage. Adamya Chetana runs ZERO garbage kitchen. Even if not ZERO, most kitchens can reduce garbage. Experts showed how simple steps like water reuse, using green waste to compost can not only reduce wastage, garbage and bad odour in your own kitchen, but also contribute to reducing our city’s garbage problem! Necessity is the mother of invention - removing garbage bins to stary with has made many kitchens innovate to reduce, reuse and recycle waste was an interesting tip!

Fossil Free Fuel workshops lead by Dr Kumar Gowda and Dr. Tejaswini AnanthKumar talked about switching from polluting fossil fuels to renewable energy sources including bio-gas, solar energy. This is especially relevant for larger kitchens in organisations.

In order to emphasize the important role breakfast plays in education, Sodexo’s team at San Jose Unified School District is taking positive breakfast messages directly to students through different activities. Not only are we joining schools throughout the U.S. in celebrating National School Breakfast Week from March 5 through 9, but we also took our role promoting breakfast to the next level by participating in the annual Sodexo Future Chefs: Healthy Breakfast Challenge. This is a national program that uses activity and the spirit of friendly competition to encourage students to eat healthy and nutritious breakfasts at nearly 250 Sodexo-served schools in 27 states across the country. Sodexo challenged all San Jose Unified School District middle school students to come up with creative breakfast recipes. This is a photo from my "things I can have" gallery. As of recently, I have chosen to make all of my dinners on weekdays to be vegetable oriented. I have been sautéing a wide variety of vegetables like peppers, zucchini, cauliflower, broccoli, onions, etc. Since I've started, I feel much healthier and actually miss my vegetables when I splurge on the weekdays for cheddar fries instead. In addition to eating healthier, I've started a more rigorous workout plan than my previous one. I like my new lifestyle change because I feel healthier and much better about myself in general. I realize that I am very lucky to be able to afford to choose a healthy life style and that I go to Ohio State where I can use their work out facilities. Veggies are a great food to be consumed for a nutrients and energy.

Feeding our family with nutritious meals everyday takes a lot of organisation. Without advanced planning, the process can become time consuming and expensive (think hours of circling up and down the aisles or fresh foods that we forget about then get spoiled). You might think you know this gazelle, this impala. Our Western European minds are conditioned to the North American version, the Chevrolet Impala, or the anglicised drone of some commentator on a wildlife documentary. It's a Zulu word, so maybe we don't really know the impala.

On a game drive, Efrance, the driver might tell you that the impala belongs to McDonalds. Those black stripes forming an "M" on their rump is the giveaway. I can attest that impala is more tasty, wholesome and nutritious than anything to have come out of a MickeyDs.

What you'll also discover is that being a Zulu word the emphasis in the pronunciation is not how Chevrolet would have you believe. The Zulu language was not a written language so what we see as impala poorly describes how its sounds when pronounced by a native speaker. It's almost as though that "i" isn't there at all, making it more m-pala than im-pala. The "m" syllable is short, almost a closed lips grunt, and all the emphasis goes to the "pala" with an exhalation of breath. I failed to absorb phonetics so don't ask me to write it!

So there you have it. The impala, perfectly adapted and blending into the bush might not be quite as we expect.

Magnolia asked if I would be keen to create a recipe using their new Oat Plus Milk and I accepted the challenge. These are the photos.

Edible Parts: Leaves, Seed, Shoots,

Edible Uses: Egg, Tea, Salad, Potherb, Vegetable, Soup,

Leaves and young shoots - raw or cooked. A mild pleasant flavor, they are said to be highly nutritious. They can be added in quantity to salads, and make an excellent lettuce substitute, they can also be cooked as greens. The leaves are mucilaginous, when cooked in soups etc., they tend to thicken it in much the same way as okra (Abelmoschatus esculenta). Some people find this mucilaginous texture unpleasant, especially if the leaves are cooked. Immature seed pods (called cheeses) - raw or cooked. A pleasant nutty flavor, they are nice as a nibble but too small for most people to want to collect in quantity. A decoction of the roots is used as an egg-white substitute for making meringue. The roots are brought to the boil in water and then simmered until the water becomes quite thick. This liquid can then be whisked in much the same way as egg whites. A tea can be made from the dried leaves.

CAUTION:

When grown on nitrogen rich soils (and particularly when these are inorganic), the plant tends to concentrate high levels of nitrates in its leaves. The leaves are perfectly wholesome at all other times.

MEDICINAL USES: Anti-inflammatory, Antiphlogistic, Astringent, Demulcent, Diuretic, Emollient, Expectorant, Laxative, Poultice, Purgative, Salve,

All parts of the plant are antiphlogistic, astringent, demulcent, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, laxative, salve. The leaves and flowers can be eaten as part of the diet, or a tea can be made from the leaves, flowers or roots. The leaves and flowers are the main part used, their demulcent properties making them valuable as a poultice for bruise, inflammations, insect bites etc., or taken internally in the treatment of respiratory system diseases or inflammation of the digestive or urinary systems. They have similar properties, but are considered to be inferior to the marsh mallow (Althaea officinalis), though they are stronger acting than the common mallow (M. sylvestris). They are seldom used internally. The plant is an excellent laxative for young children.

OTHER USES: Dye, Cream, Yellow, Green, Teeth

Cream, yellow and green dyes can be obtained from the plant and the seed heads. The root is used as a toothbrush.
