Standing on top of a gigantic sunflower seed head, this black-capped chickadee is busy feasting on all that nutritious free food.

Crossbills usually prise open pine cones in situ to extract the nutritious seeds inside and will often hang acrobatically to achieve this. But sometimes they use their bills like secateurs to snip off the cone and carry it somewhere more convenient for extracting the seeds. I managed to capture this male in the act of pinching a Scot's Pine cone. Although there seems to be a hint of green about the plumage, this falls into the normal range of variation of male Crossbills.

I wonder if it's edible or nutritious like chaga...

Fresh blueberries are a popular summer treat. They have a sweet flavour, and they are succulent and nutritious.

Blueberries can be eaten freshly picked or incorporated into a variety of recipes. They can also be purchased frozen.

They have been shown to protect against heart disease and cancer, and can also help maintain bone strength, mental health, and healthful blood pressure.

Blueberries can also help skin health, diabetes management, cancer prevention.

The gulls spent several minutes trying to figure out how to eat the starfish. Each gull picked up the starfish and carried it around before dropping it. Eventually, a tug of war between two gulls produced unintended consequences. The unfortunate starfish was torn apart, resulting in a shared meal. It was refreshing to see gulls eating proper, nutritious food, caught from the sea, rather than the usual burger and chips.

Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture, which is a method of growing plants without soil, by instead using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent. Terrestrial plants may be grown with only their roots exposed to the nutritious liquid, or the roots may be physically supported by an inert medium such as perlite, gravel, or other substrates.

Kihikatea

The tree grows to a height of 55 metres (180 ft) with a trunk exceeding 1 metre (3 ft) in diameter,

They were very tall by European standards, tall even by Australian standards, with boles that are massive by any standards, further pushed out by plank buttresses at the base, as is typical of swamp trees.

The small fruit (koroi) are superabundant and highly nutritious. The birds ate them and flocked for miles to do so.

The Maori say that the kahikatea is the child of Tane and Hine waoriki, or of Tane and Kuraki. They used a decoction of the leaves to treat urinary complaints. The wood was used to make weapons and canoes, the burned soot of heartwood for tattooing, the bark for torches, and the gum for chewing gum (Interpretive sign at Otorohanga Kiwi House, 2003).

As with most of New Zealand's native podocarps, the kahikatea forests were severely depleted by historical logging. The devastation of this species was particularly severe because it grew best on wet lowlands ideally suited for agriculture.

These Mourning Dove chicks have grown noticeably during the past 24 hours proving the rich nutritious crop milk is doing it's job.

After spending the winter somewhere in Mexico or Central America, this lovely male tree swallow has returned to Cardinal Marsh where it could stay and nest, or it could continue on to the far reaches of northern Canada. In either case, it is resting here after eating its fill of nutritious midges emerging from the marsh.

In terms of food value, the variety of mixture of vegetables, sweet peas, carrots, long cabbage and golden mushrooms, had made this more nutritious. To cook this dish, chopped garlic and dried shrimps were sautéed in olive oil till fragrant. Vegetables were then added in, seasonings were also added at the same time and stir-fried till veggies were just al dente.

This is Changthama - a special breed of goats that produce the finest and rarest Cashmere wool in the world.

Interestingly, the harsh weather conditions of the remote Changthang region, and the nutritious plants located in high altitude are what is essential for producing the finest Cashmere.

The Changpa tribes will also chant while herding the sheep. Chanting is used to accumulate wisdom and merit and to also purify negativity.

Excerpt from the Information Board:

"Food deserts" are geographical areas where access to affordable and nutritious food is very limited. This is typically seen in neighbourhoods where there are predominantly low-income residents. Our inspiration for creating a desert is to display the similarities between a food desert and a geographic desert.

The cactus and the skull symbolize the struggle of the most vulnerable in our society. A desert has a harsh environment with a lack of vegetation, similar to a food desert where food is limited. We hope that our desert of food cans will inspire others to help eliminate food insecurity.

Number of cans used: 4,428.

Locust Borer Longhorn Beetle – 2020OCT02 – Charlotte, NC

I went to harvest goldenrod for goldenrod tea, finding in the bountiful blossoms a breathtaking bonus: a beauteous beetle!

Spectacular arrays of brilliant yellow flowers attract throngs of insects intent on collecting and consuming the nutritious large and rather sticky pollen from myriads of small flowers on each plant, a magnet for late summer and early autumn insects, this wasp-striped longhorn beetle among the most eye-catching, especially important to it as a mimic (Batesian mimicry, something harmless imitating something dangerous): looks like a bee or a wasp but cannot sting.

Many insects, like this locust borer, try very hard to imitate bees (called bee mimics) and wasps, and do a surprisingly good job of it!

Hope you enjoy this 25% of 213 captures I took here this day!

Bearded Reedlings will concentrate on feeding on insect based foods during Spring and Summer but as the weather changes in Autumn insect life decreases as these tiny insects prepare for hibernation in and around the wetlands. At this time birds like the Bearded Reedling change their diet to seeds, particularly from the tall fonds of reed heads or Phragmites, abundant with seeds. Bearded Reedlings are pretty hardy little birds and although there is some dispersal and part migration throughout Europe during Autum and Winter, lots of birds stay and survive the colder seasons. I suppose that the recent warmer climate with less severe winters help their survival during this time.
