This raptor is perched directly above a deer carcass he has been dominating...As winter deepens, Bald Eagles will congregate on road killed deer carcasses, and why not, its fresh venison, the wolves won't approach the kills in daylight and drive off the Eagles and Ravens. The only real competition for the highly nutritious venison are other Eagles, including Golden Eagles, and Ravens...
Perhaps not one of your favourite weeds to see. In each metamorphic stage it's very photographic.
They are edible and nutritious. Every part of this common edible weed is tasty both raw and cooked. If raw dandelion leaves don't appeal to you, they can also be steamed or added to a stir-fry or soup, which can make them taste less bitter. The flowers are sweet and crunchy, and can be eaten raw, or breaded and fried, or even used to make dandelion syrup or wine. The root of the dandelion can be dried and roasted and used as a coffee substitute, or added to any recipe that calls for root vegetables.

We used to breed canaries and, at the breeding season, give them some "egg and biscuit" supplement, a nutritious mix for healthy baby birds and they loved it. So, when I prepare veal schnitzels for us and there is some leftover egg & breadcrumbs, I place it on the shed roof to make wild birds happy and healthy. Today, it attracted Valentino the Kookaburra (I didn't know he liked that !), Arthur the Noisy Miner, Pete the Pied Currawong and Maggie the Magpie :)

Irruption of crossbill provided an opportunity for American lifer in #561. they move in a group and stay few minutes on a tree, then move on. bad light but not bed for my record shot.
From Finch network and Cornell: A fascinating finch of coniferous woodlands, the Red Crossbill forages on nutritious seeds in pine, hemlock, Douglas-fir, and spruce cones. Their specialized bills allow them to break into unopened cones, giving them an advantage over other finch species. Because conifers produce seeds unpredictably, Red Crossbills sometimes wander (or “irrupt”) far beyond their usual range. They nest wherever and whenever they find abundant food, sometimes even in winter. Several types of Red Crossbill exist; they each have different calls, feed on particular conifer species, and might represent distinct species. The 12 Red Crossbill call types in North America are associated with their own core zone of occurrence and irruption zones. Type 2 is the most widespread of the call types, and some birds can be found in the eastern United States with some regularity—it will even breed there. Type 4, meanwhile, is predominantly a bird of the Pacific Northwest and sometimes the Intermountain West region, and its appearance elsewhere is always notable.
Missy and Psycho went for their annual check up at the vet yesterday. Missy checked out fine, but Psycho didn't fare as well. She has a condition called dental resorption...she has lost two teeth altogether and others are chipped. It isn't due to poor diet since she only eats nutritious hard kibbles and no soft foods. They haven't found a cause for this disease yet, but she will need to have several teeth removed within the month. under anesthesia. I feel so sad for her :( BTW thank you all who have left such kind and encouraging words :) I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart :)))

After a comfort call, Brewster was ready for his morning treat. Maurice looked in the cabinets and found a bag of bones, all nutritiously flavored, and ready to serve. He held one out for Brewster to take, but instead of grabbing it like most dogs would, he looked with wide eyes at Maurice, came over to lick his hand, then slowly took the bone in his mouth. Maurice stood there totally surprised at such behavior!
Meanwhile, Bentley had been observing this and wondered just what kind of training this dog received. It was so out of the ordinary.
Maurice broke the silence and said to Brewster, “You’re a good dog, aren’t you? I wonder who trained you to be so patient in getting your food.”
Brewster was content to go to his comfortable blanket and enjoy his breakfast. Meanwhile, Maurice told Bentley that he needed to get to work soon. After all, the hour of sleep he was able to grab would quickly be consumed with work, so he needed to get going.
“I hope I can last the morning,” he said with a sigh. “At lunch I can take a nap. Thankfully, Mrs. Claus gives us an hour for lunch, but knowing those elves, they would rather play reindeer games after they gobble down their food in ten minutes. Perhaps they should have been trained like Brewster’s trainer!”
Bark is more nutritious for elephants when the sap is rising in the inner bark making it more nourishing than the outer bark. Twigs and ends of branches are desirable fodder for elephants as the ratio of inner to outer bark is higher. Many studies show that higher consumption of bark by elephants is seasonal when grasses and herbs are not available.

It seems that Autumn and Halloween are synonymous with Squash. In my house that's so true. We grew Delicata in our garden this year and we've really been enjoying them. It's one of my favourites and you can eat the skin, so no peeling required!!!

Every tradition, every myth, is based on a grain of truth...
Recent evidence suggests that the easter bunny originated somewhere in what was once the supercontinent Gondwana, 2000 to 2000000000 years ago.
Several factors were important in the creation of the easter bunny story:
- dinosaurs would lay their eggs at this time of year
- their eggs were nutritious
- prehistoric man would be really hungry after a long winter
- being male and hungry predisposed him to making stupid decisions e.g.. stealing dinosaur eggs
- ancient megafauna like megarabbit were slow moving and easy to kill, but not as nutritious as dinosaur eggs
- if you wore megabunny ears like a hat, it would make you (prehistoric man) appear bigger and thus scarier to dinosaurs, increasing your chance of successfully stealing dinosaur eggs and surviving to procreate another day from 1:32544756485 to 1:7362486346
- prehistoric man had not yet mastered statistics or critical thought.
With these well documented facts put together, we can now appreciate how the story of the "easter bunny" and "easter eggs" came to be.
Ofcourse, like all stories, it has changed somewhat over the years, but the main message of Easter has remained the same - chocolate eggs taste better than real eggs, but are far less nutritious.
Happy hunting, and happy Easter!

Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly on the remains of dead animals. It usually disdains the actual meat, however, and lives on a diet that is typically 85–90% bone marrow. This is the only living bird species that specializes in feeding on marrow. The bearded vulture can swallow whole or bite through brittle bones up to the size of a lamb's femur and its powerful digestive system quickly dissolves even large pieces. The bearded vulture has learned to crack bones too large to be swallowed by carrying them in flight to a height of 50–150 m (160–490 ft) above the ground and then dropping them onto rocks below, which smashes them into smaller pieces and exposes the nutritious marrow. They can fly with bones up to 10 cm (3.9 in) in diameter and weighing over 4 kg (8.8 lb), or nearly equal to their own weight.[8] After dropping the large bones, the bearded vulture spirals or glides down to inspect them and may repeat the act if the bone is not sufficiently cracked. This learned skill requires extensive practice by immature birds and takes up to seven years to master. Its old name of ossifrage ("bone breaker") relates to this habit. More seldom, these birds have been observed to try to break bones (usually of a medium size) by hammering them with their bill directly into rocks while perched. During the breeding season they feed mainly on carrion. They prefer limbs of sheep and other small mammals and they carry the food to the nest unlike other vultures which feed their young by regurgitation.
Live prey is sometimes attacked by the bearded vulture, with perhaps greater regularity than any other vulture. Among these, tortoises seem to be especially favored depending on their local abundance. Tortoises preyed on may be nearly as heavy as the preying vulture. When killing tortoise, bearded vultures also fly to some height and drop them to crack open the bulky reptiles' hard shells. Golden eagles have been observed to kill tortoises in the same way. Other live animals, up to nearly their own size, have been observed to be predaciously seized and dropped in flight. Among these are rock hyraxes, hares, marmots and, in one case, a 62 cm (24 in) long monitor lizard. Larger animals have been known to be attacked by bearded vultures, including ibex, Capra goats, Chamois and Steenbok. These animals have been killed by being surprised by the large birds and battered with wings until they fall off precipitous rocky edges to their deaths; although in some cases these may be accidental killings when both the vulture and the mammal surprise each other. Many large animals killed by bearded vultures are unsteady young, or have appeared sickly or obviously injured. Humans have been anecdotally reported to have been killed in the same way. However, this is unconfirmed and, if it does happen, most biologists who have studied the birds generally agreed it would be accidental on the part of the vulture. Occasionally smaller ground-dwelling birds, such as partridges and pigeons, have been reported eaten, possibly either as fresh carrion (which is usually ignored by these birds) or killed with beating wings by the vulture. While foraging for bones or live prey while in flight, bearded vultures fly fairly low over the rocky ground, staying around 2 to 4 m (6.6 to 13.1 ft) high. Occasionally, breeding pairs may forage and hunt together. In the Ethiopian Highlands, bearded vultures have adapted to living largely off human refuse.
Breeding
The bearded vulture occupies an enormous territory year-around. It may forage over two square kilometers each day. The breeding period is variable, being December through September in Eurasia, November to June in the Indian subcontinent, October to May in Ethiopia, throughout the year in eastern Africa and May to January in southern Africa. Although generally solitary, the bond between a breeding pair is often considerably close. In a few cases, polyandry has been recorded in the species. The territorial and breeding display between bearded vultures is often spectacular, involving the showing of talons, tumbling and spiralling while in solo flight. The large birds also regularly lock feet with each other and fall some distance through the sky with each other. The nest is a massive pile of sticks, that goes from around 1 m (3.3 ft) across and 69 cm (27 in) deep when first constructed up to 2.5 m (8.2 ft) across and 1 m (3.3 ft) deep, with a covering of various animal matter from food, after repeated uses. The female usually lays a clutch of 1 to 2 eggs, though 3 have been recorded on rare occasions. which are incubated for 53 to 60 days. After hatching the young spend 100 to 130 days in the nest before fledging. The young may be dependent on the parents for up to 2 years, forcing the parents to nest in alternate years on a regular basis. Typically, the bearded vulture nests in caves and on ledges and rock outcrops or caves on steep rock walls, so are very difficult for nest-predating mammals to access. Wild bearded vultures have a mean lifespan of 21.4 years, but have been observed to live for up to at least 45 years in captivity.
Zebras, like other equids, use facial expression and vocalization to display emotion and communicate. I'm certain that cheese and my photo don't even cross this zebra's mind, while water might be something they are all looking for. The herd grazes on an open field of dry grasses. It's the dry season, and a dusty but overcast day give hope that rain may fall. Rain gives way to new plant growth within days and greener pastures are much more nutritious than old dry growth. Zebras are highly adept at chasing rain and storms. Other bovine species, like wildebeest, will frequently let zebras take the lead during migration, because of this particular ability. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #Wildlife in #Tanzania #Nature in #Africa #Zebras #DrDADBooks #WhenYou HearHoofbeats #Canon #WildlifeConservation

Male Bearded Tit in the reed bed.
About this time of year they change from a diet of insects to seeds. This male is chewing on a some lovely nutritious reed seeds.
Unfortunately they don't have the choice of going back to the insect equivalent of a bacon sandwich until the spring.
