Tropical beauties in the cold Netherlands. They like it here because of our nutritious waters.

And maybe also because our winters are not that cold anymore.

Nearly five years ago, I made a commitment to get healthy. Over the following year and a half, I dropped over 70 pounds and began educating myself about food and nutrition. In the subsequent years, I became a vegetarian, gained some weight back due to surgery and health issues, and got back on track as soon as I had recovered. If you open my refrigerator today, you would see very little processed food and lots and lots of the color green. I eat a large salad every single day for lunch and snack on fresh fruit and vegetables. I feel better than ever and look forward to a long, healthy life.

Wikipedia: "The common name of miner's lettuce refers to how the plant was used by miners during the California Gold Rush, who ate it to prevent scurvy [contains Vitamin C in large amounts]. It is in season in April and May [Feb-April in California's East Bay], and can be eaten as a leaf vegetable. Most commonly, it is eaten raw in salads, but it is not quite as delicate as cultivated lettuce [their opinion!! I have no complaint!!]. Sometimes, it is boiled like spinach, which it resembles in taste and chemical composition. Caution should be used because wild C. perfoliata can sometimes accumulate toxic amounts of soluble oxalates (also present in spinach [and lots of greens!!]).

It has been widely naturalized in western Europe, after being introduced there [from?] in the 18th century, possibly by the naturalist Archibald Menzies, who brought it to Kew Gardens in London in 1794."

Just because this bald eagle is trying to eat the high fat, highly nutritious brain of this salmon, that does not make it a zombie.

Brain, skin, and roe are a good source of high quality fat that will help this eagle survive the winter. Eagles will also eat the flesh after the more sought after parts are gone.

The impala (Aepyceros melampus) is a medium-sized, slender antelope similar to the kob or Grant's gazelle in build. The head-and-body length is around 130 centimetres (51 in).Males reach approximately 75–92 centimetres (30–36 in) at the shoulder, while females are 70–85 centimetres (28–33 in) tall. Males typically weigh 53–76 kilograms (117–168 lb) and females 40–53 kilograms (88–117 lb). Dimorphic, females are hornless and smaller than males. Males grow slender, lyre-shaped horns 45–92 centimetres (18–36 in) long. The horns, strongly ridged and divergent, are circular in section and hollow at the base. Their arch-like structure allows interlocking of horns, which helps a male throw off his opponent during fights; horns also protect the skull from damage.

The glossy coat of the impala shows two-tone colouration – the reddish brown back and the tan flanks; these are in sharp contrast to the white underbelly. Facial features include white rings around the eyes and a light chin and snout. The ears, 17 centimetres (6.7 in) long, are tipped with black. Black streaks run from the buttocks to the upper hindlegs. The bushy white tail, 30 centimetres (12 in) long, features a solid black stripe along the midline. The impala's colouration bears a strong resemblance to the gerenuk, which has shorter horns and lacks the black thigh stripes of the impala. The impala has scent glands covered by a black tuft of hair on the hindlegs. Sebaceous glands concentrated on the forehead and dispersed on the torso of dominant males are most active during the mating season, while those of females are only partially developed and do not undergo seasonal changes.

Impala feed on soft and nutritious grasses such as Digitaria macroblephara; tough, tall grasses, such as Heteropogon contortus and Themeda triandra, are typically avoided. Impala on the periphery of the herds are generally more vigilant against predators than those feeding in the centre; a foraging individual will try to defend the patch it is feeding on by lowering its head. A study revealed that time spent in foraging reaches a maximum of 75.5% of the day in the late dry season, decreases through the rainy season, and is minimal in the early dry season (57.8%)

This Red Fox has just devoured several voles caught in the grass and leaf litter at the edge of the boreal forest. Interesting talk with a wildlife biologist friend concerning this species in North America. The Red Fox is circumboreal and therefore native to northern Canada. Although they are the same species, foxes in the remainder of North America (central and southern regions) are descended from foxes introduced from Europe, and there appear to be behavioural differences. These foxes seem to prefer farmland habitat and generally live close to human habitation. The more northerly foxes are more adapted to living in the forests. It must be said, however, that they are bold little canids, and the population in and around Prince Albert show little fear of humans.

Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly on the remains of dead animals. It usually disdains the actual meat, however, and lives on a diet that is typically 85–90% bone marrow. This is the only living bird species that specializes in feeding on marrow. The bearded vulture can swallow whole or bite through brittle bones up to the size of a lamb's femur and its powerful digestive system quickly dissolves even large pieces. The bearded vulture has learned to crack bones too large to be swallowed by carrying them in flight to a height of 50–150 m (160–490 ft) above the ground and then dropping them onto rocks below, which smashes them into smaller pieces and exposes the nutritious marrow. They can fly with bones up to 10 cm (3.9 in) in diameter and weighing over 4 kg (8.8 lb), or nearly equal to their own weight.[8] After dropping the large bones, the bearded vulture spirals or glides down to inspect them and may repeat the act if the bone is not sufficiently cracked. This learned skill requires extensive practice by immature birds and takes up to seven years to master. Its old name of ossifrage ("bone breaker") relates to this habit. More seldom, these birds have been observed to try to break bones (usually of a medium size) by hammering them with their bill directly into rocks while perched. During the breeding season they feed mainly on carrion. They prefer limbs of sheep and other small mammals and they carry the food to the nest unlike other vultures which feed their young by regurgitation.

Live prey is sometimes attacked by the bearded vulture, with perhaps greater regularity than any other vulture. Among these, tortoises seem to be especially favored depending on their local abundance. Tortoises preyed on may be nearly as heavy as the preying vulture. When killing tortoise, bearded vultures also fly to some height and drop them to crack open the bulky reptiles' hard shells. Golden eagles have been observed to kill tortoises in the same way. Other live animals, up to nearly their own size, have been observed to be predaciously seized and dropped in flight. Among these are rock hyraxes, hares, marmots and, in one case, a 62 cm (24 in) long monitor lizard. Larger animals have been known to be attacked by bearded vultures, including ibex, Capra goats, Chamois and Steenbok. These animals have been killed by being surprised by the large birds and battered with wings until they fall off precipitous rocky edges to their deaths; although in some cases these may be accidental killings when both the vulture and the mammal surprise each other. Many large animals killed by bearded vultures are unsteady young, or have appeared sickly or obviously injured. Humans have been anecdotally reported to have been killed in the same way. However, this is unconfirmed and, if it does happen, most biologists who have studied the birds generally agreed it would be accidental on the part of the vulture. Occasionally smaller ground-dwelling birds, such as partridges and pigeons, have been reported eaten, possibly either as fresh carrion (which is usually ignored by these birds) or killed with beating wings by the vulture. While foraging for bones or live prey while in flight, bearded vultures fly fairly low over the rocky ground, staying around 2 to 4 m (6.6 to 13.1 ft) high. Occasionally, breeding pairs may forage and hunt together. In the Ethiopian Highlands, bearded vultures have adapted to living largely off human refuse.

Breeding

The bearded vulture occupies an enormous territory year-around. It may forage over two square kilometers each day. The breeding period is variable, being December through September in Eurasia, November to June in the Indian subcontinent, October to May in Ethiopia, throughout the year in eastern Africa and May to January in southern Africa. Although generally solitary, the bond between a breeding pair is often considerably close. In a few cases, polyandry has been recorded in the species. The territorial and breeding display between bearded vultures is often spectacular, involving the showing of talons, tumbling and spiralling while in solo flight. The large birds also regularly lock feet with each other and fall some distance through the sky with each other. The nest is a massive pile of sticks, that goes from around 1 m (3.3 ft) across and 69 cm (27 in) deep when first constructed up to 2.5 m (8.2 ft) across and 1 m (3.3 ft) deep, with a covering of various animal matter from food, after repeated uses. The female usually lays a clutch of 1 to 2 eggs, though 3 have been recorded on rare occasions. which are incubated for 53 to 60 days. After hatching the young spend 100 to 130 days in the nest before fledging. The young may be dependent on the parents for up to 2 years, forcing the parents to nest in alternate years on a regular basis. Typically, the bearded vulture nests in caves and on ledges and rock outcrops or caves on steep rock walls, so are very difficult for nest-predating mammals to access. Wild bearded vultures have a mean lifespan of 21.4 years, but have been observed to live for up to at least 45 years in captivity.

This kind individual was doing the best she could (pacing back and forth) sharing a bag of nutritious seed with a sorde of Mallard. Respect.

Alternatively, out of shot was a family who were throwing copious amounts of bread to the ducks. The children were throwing large pieces too, which could choke the wee birds..

In this day and age you would think that people would know that there is little nutritional value in feeding bread to ducks and it can create harmful bacteria in the water also.

“Considered the final frontier of the United States, Alaska has the highest bear-to-human ratio in the USA, with nearly one bear for every five people in the state! The majority of the bears in North America live in Alaska. The highest concentration of grizzly bears in the United States is in Katmai National Park. The highest concentration of grizzly bears in the United States is in Katmai National Park. The park was established in 1918 to protect the brown bears that frequent the area, and today it's home to an estimated 2,000 grizzlies.” (June 2, 2023)

Bear Cubs

When it comes to pregnancy, giving birth and nursing, bears are remarkable. The cubs are born in the winter and the mother bear nurses them as she hibernates. The mother bear can create nutritious milk to feed the cubs during hibernation without eating or drinking.

One of the most common lawn weeds, it is highly nutritious and has strong medicinal properties. A common ingredient in healing salves. When you are hard up for a bit of fresh greenery (lettuce has very little nutrition, remember!), grab a few of these, wash well, and chop fine. Good raw or cooked. Mild flavor. Not so great alone for a salad, but small amounts mixed with other veg works fine. I had some last night--these, actually.

It also takes the pain out of insect bites/stings! Bruise leaf and rub on sore. Magic!

"Plantago is a genus of about 200 species of small, inconspicuous plants commonly called plantains or fleaworts . The common name plantain is shared with the unrelated cooking plantain , a kind of banana . Most are herbaceous plants , though a few are subshrubs growing to 60 cm (24 in) tall."--Wikipedia.
