School district, chef and farmer unite to feed a healthy future
Chefs and farmers have something in common. Both are passionate about high-quality, healthy foods. When the two join forces, everyone wins – especially when consumers are students in the Bondurant-Farrar Community School District. Literally feeding a healthy future is what this collaborative arrangement is all about.
David Walker, nutrition and custodial director for Bondurant-Farrar, secured two Local Food for Schools grants – one for fruits, vegetables and produce and one for proteins – through the Iowa Department of Education and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) Local Food for Schools grant program.
The Food for Schools grant to purchase proteins allowed Walker to expand his ability to buy local food beyond just produce. So, he contacted Prudent Produce food hub in Elkhart who contacted Shivers Farms, a nearby family farm specializing in beef production. A beneficial collaboration for all was born, and for Bondurant students, beef doesn’t come any more local than five miles up the road.
The district's enrollment is approximately 2,725 K-12 students. It serves breakfast and lunch daily to about 400-plus students in each of five different schools in the district.

Teaching children how to choose a delicious, nutritious meal, begins at a young age. Children and families do not have to live in West Des Moines to participate in the West Des Moines Community School District Summer Food Service Program. Though the program is aimed at supporting the needs of children age 18 and under, adults may pay a small fee for a meal, or visit West Des Moines Human Services to learn if they qualify for a free meal.
The Summer Food Service Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through reimbursements to local sponsors. The West Des Moines site is but one of over 500 throughout the state, all designed to provide a meal or two to students who otherwise might go without during the summer months. At the Legion Park site, the West Des Moines District has partnered with West Des Moines Human Services, Parks and Recreation, and the public library to help provide additional programs and activities for participants.
Organic veggies and fruits chopped individually in food processor and tossed with natural dressing. Nutritious, delicious and easy to digest!
Two notes about this project:
1. Because of the holes in the cereal and the similar colors of the two "pixels", this needs to be viewed from a distance
2. The camera flash (which refused to turn off) makes the other-wise invisible duct tape, visible
...in other words, the picture sucks, but the actual piece was okay

About: I just felt like making a statement about how much sugar the average person consumes. And what better way to do that than to spell it out with a "nutritious" breakfast cereal made with "real" apples? Yeah right. By the end of this, my hands were coated in sugary-goo. Gross.

Sorry if this is a bit gross, but it was fascinating to watch the turtle do his thing. Mostly, I just see them as speed bumps in the road, rather than engaging in a more interesting behavior. Anyway, he was certainly enjoying his breakfast of squished (tenderized?) toad. Good protein!

The assignment: The 'Nutrition Center Netherlands' (my own translation from the Dutch organization 'Voedingscentrum Nederland') is researching the situation in Rotterdam and wants a black and white image to go with an article about Unhealthy food and the changes in eating habits.
