As the war progressed into the Autumn of 1914, Selwyn became the base not only for Army officers but also for Army nurses and VADS - volunteers who provided nursing services. They all worked at the First Eastern General Hospital in Cambridge, which was erected very quickly but had over 1,000 beds by the end of the year. It was commissioned on 5th August 1914 and had its first temporary base at the Leys School, before transferring to Trinity College and then, finally in October 1914, to the site of what is now the University Library.
Helen Dyer was one of the VADS who was stationed at Selwyn during the war. Her daughter, Helen Genever, contacted the College Archives earlier this year as she wanted to find out more about her mother’s time in Cambridge. She had discovered some incomplete transcripts of a speech that her mother had given to her local WI in the 1970s, as well as some photos and postcards, but that was all she knew. The College Archivist was able to fill in some of the gaps with the help of the Archivist at Addenbrooke’s.
Helen Dyer became a VAD because she was unhappy in her job as a teacher in the East End of London. When she first came to Cambridge she probably worked at the small hospital at the Leys School. The nurses and VADS at Selwyn eventually occupied A, B, C and E staircases and shared sets of rooms.Helen Dyer recalls the living conditions at Selwyn, “I can remember long corridors and no heating except fires in rooms. Only one wash basin with no hot water... So we were grateful when we were allowed to bath in Newnham College.” She also mentions a tragedy which occurred at Selwyn in 1916 when one girl, who was the daughter of one of the doctors, died after her nightdress caught alight on the fire in her room. During their free time the VADs and nurses went punting and attended services in King’s College Chapel. Later in the war, Helen Dyer went to France, where she worked at the No. 55 General Hospital in Wimereux - one of the military base hospitals for casualties coming from the front line.
A film about the First Eastern General Hospital in Cambridge has recently been issued by Cambridge University at www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/from-the-front-to-the-backs-s.... The College Archivist assisted with the research for this film.

I've been working on this dress since Amelia was a month old, and I noticed how much I drooled every time I passed a pretty dress in a storefront window.
Of course woven dresses are pretty much impossible to nurse in, so I thought it would be a good design & pattern making challenge to make one. While I was at it, I decided to use striped and patterned fabrics, because I normally work with solid colors.
Here are the results. I'm 75% happy with it, which is good enough to wear. In fact, I've already worn it to one party, and I've got another one to wear it to this weekend.

Galapagos sea lions typically nurse for one year, until the new pups are born (each female has one pup every 12 months). Some juvenile males will insist on nursing longer, up to 3 years, and will prevent any new siblings from nursing during that time, forcing them to starve to death.
The pose of the nursing woman —a standard one in Egyptian art— s also the hieroglyph meaning "nurse." Because its subjects are not identified, this little figure probably did not represent real individuals but rather served as a votive gift requesting a goddess's protection.
