Black Headed Gull by grassrootsgroundswell

This bird has a dark chocolate coloured head in summer, so 'black' is slightly misleading. Note the beautiful red beak and legs so often overlooked on this common bird.

Note I am not actually surfing, the waves were too big and too far out for me. It's my mate Kevin's board, he grew up surfing in South Africa. I actually tried to body board and got trapped in some wild Tsunami like succession of 15 waves about 5m high, it snapped the body board in half at one point and I decided to swim back in, no harm done but I was exhausted. Quite funny.

...Clare Dixon will drive us to Minneapolis where we will spend the day and she will see us off on the 8:45 pm train the "Empire Builder" for Seattle, arrive there 8 AM. Wednesday 11th. Leave 12:30 pm "Cascade Ltd" ar. Berkeley 8:15 AM 12th. So we'll have two days to rest before 3:30 pm 14th. It will be a big occasion—many people to meet so I planned our arrival so we could rest beforehand. Leave Monday Oct. 16th from S. Francisco 5pm arr. Chicago 10:45 AM Wednesday l 18th—leave same day for New York 5pm getting in 19th 9:30 AM will rest on the train.
