L, a dear, talented, inspiring and brave contact and friend from home, posted some pages of one of her art notebooks and invited me to do the same in Artist's Books, her new group. I have so very little - all my pages are filled with only writing. But, just to keep her going, I'll share some of what I have.
New Year's Day 2003, Macau
Pousada de Coloane (hotel)
Gray gray cold windy morning
Tai Ji on the cold patio
Slow solitary breakfast watching
how the flags handle the wind
(The little hotel was above a small beach. Looking across the water is Taipa, another of Macau's islands. There where flags of so many nations being flown there these were the ones I could see from the window)

July 20, 1942
......... On Shabbat we went for a trip to Maabaroth and Natanya. We were the guest of the Australian Physician Major Marshall , who spends his 10 day vacation here. A simple, taciturn man. The hate of Germany among the Anglo-Saxon people is significant. He is for total eradication of the German people, sterilization, using them for scientific purposes. We, who have more reasons for hating them, don't have such feelings.
.........The children enjoy the sea,. How pretty is a sun-tanned chilld's body on the beach.

..... Yoram is learning flute and swimming. He shows quite clearly that his motto is: Do not exert yourself. Maybe he will finally achieve it in this way while scraping along , but he is not willing to invest stamina and energy.
August 4, 1942
.... The children got immunized against tetanus with antitoxin.

Yoram has now also gymnastics. Quite a pleasant teacher.
Dr. Buddenwieser , Harry's first teacher at Friedrichshain , now a resident in pharmacy, lent us the Bear fables for learning German. A lovely and lively book. How different from our stiff , dry fables, not to mention the Hebrew ones, sugar-coated and sentimental.

....... Yoram and Harry went yesterday to Kfar Vitkin. Yoram was joyful and excited before the trip. Eri's flu subsiding. Still a little pale, but happy with returning- from -vacation Chaya. Good that I am not jealous.
Editor's note
The July 20, 1942 entry appeared in a similar form in notebook #1- the entry here however gives new information about the wish to destroy Germany.
Maabaroth is a kibbutz , Kfar Vitkin a village and Natanya a town , all close to each other, in central Israel.
Yoram Heller as a grownup , was just the opposite - worked hard ,was full of energy and stamina, was willing to spend a lot of energy to achieve his goals. He had both an MD and a Ph. D., was a full professor at UCLA at the age of 36. He died at 45 from brain tumor.
