I recently gave away this notebook. It was called the Gertrude Notebook because the antique postcard (reproduced on the front) was written to Gertrude by one of her girlfriends.

Apica notebooks are surprisingly slim notebooks made in Japan. They also have paper which is quite smooth- almost as nice as Clairfontaine. There appears to be a bit of bleedthrough, however, for such a thin paper, this is to be expected. I hope to have images of the bleedthrough up sometime soon as well. Very smooth... makes me want to write more in them very soon.
An outline of the funeral arrangements for my Dad.
He passed only last Wednesday, yet it seems such a long time ago. It has been a physically and emotionally tiring time.
John Dennis Brandist.
12 December 1941 - 11 December 2019.
He was 1 day off his 78th birthday. He bravely battled cancer over the last year. He said he quite enjoyed the first operation which kept him away from home for a few weeks - he liked listening to the gossip at the nurse’s station which was near his room.
Despite talking about it, he never listed his funeral wishes. The family has drawn up a list of songs he liked to listen to.
He always liked the Wallace and Gromit theme - everyone should have a tune that puts in the Fun in their Funeral.
Japanese stationery giant KOKUYO launched the Systemic series of notebook cover since Nov 2008. I totally missed this new product range but when I was in a trip to Shanghai meeting KOKUYO representatives there, I saw a nice leaflet for Systemic and enquired about it. A few days ago I received samples and found them very pleasant to use.
The Systemic series has 3 sizes (B5, A5 and A6) and two colors to choose from. Although the cover is specifically designed for Campus notebooks in the same sizes, I found that the A5 and A6 versions also work well with Moleskine's large and pocket size notebooks!!!
It is really a simple non-intrusive notebook cover. You can insert any two of the wide variety of Campus notebooks in it. The Campus notebook line also has free or dated diary versions so it can easily be used for business or personal. A nice looking ribbon tied to eyelets makes two bookmarks. An outer pocket on both the front and back cover provides temporary storage and act as a pen holder. A good quality elastic band provides enclosure function.
I think it is a great answer to many people who like to consistently use a refillable notebook but need an outer jacket/cover to hold more items or have a better presentation. To Moleskine fans who are yet to find a nice cover, this might be an answer too.

For the past few years, due to the phenomenal success of Moleskine, many notebook manufacturers copied the form factors and "created" notebooks that are either lower in quality or expensive without a reason/design. In fact, in the last PaperWorld visit I found literally 15-20 Moleskine "rip-offs". CIAK however stands out from any of these followers both because of the unique features and quality with a reasonable price.
Simply said, CIAK is handmade entirely in Italy with leather-like cover and a patent protected elastic band application on the cover. These already made a huge difference to the rest of the crowd.
In this post you can only see 2 colors and 2 models of notebooks but the actual range of their product is far bigger, including photo albums, card holders, planners, organizers etc. I have to mention the subtle imperfect coloring of the leather-like cover is done by design rather than product flaw, which gives the products a more natural looking touch.
The photos you see here shows the new Pocket Slim notebooks, which has several unique features comparing to the other releases. A thin ballpoint pen is included and protected by the elastic band. There is also a pocket on the inside of the back cover which opens boldly outward (opposite to the typical Moleskine back pocket) thanks to the protection of the elastic band, which reduces strain to the spine of the notebook as well as increasing the expandability. Finally on the last page you will find a foldable world map.
The crude fact about CIAK comparing to Moleskine is that it is not as famous as the most popular notebook, yet it is entirely handmade in Italy as supposed to China. And in terms of raw material comparing to Moleskine, you get durable leather-like cover instead of hard oilcloth and the elastic band is far stronger than Moleskine (I found that the Moleskine soft cover diary is using a lower quality elastic band, which I'll report later). However, CIAK is not perfect, there is one very weak point comparing to Moleskine: It can't lie flat when opened. I'm sure it can be improved. This Pocket Slim version however reduced the weakness simply because of its .... slimness.
Finally, just 2 more pictures of CIAK's other less popular product lines: A Card Holder and a Golf Notes. I am sure CIAK will gain more and more popularity, again because of the price point and product quality.

Textile cloth, boards thin enough to be almost flexible, leather decoration on top right corner. 256 pages of 100 gsm paper with a dot grid and page numbers. This is my current best understanding of ideal style and proportions for an everyday notebook.

This Coptic bound book features beautiful handmade Indian cotton paper, and chiyogami Japanese paper. The diagonal stitching I created by drawing out the pattern I wanted finished on the spine with a pencil, then punching all the sewing stations from the back (the "mountain peak").
A little bonus is the lined pages - I figured out that I could just print them on my computer!
The journal is filled with 160 pages of 60lb acid free sketch paper.
