Famous for its wonderful scenery, rivers and karst peaks covered in lush vegetation, Guilin has a long history as the most beautiful place in China. Established in the Qin Dynasty as a regional power base for the first emperor of China, Guilin’s population exploded to around a million during the 1930s when the city became, in southern China, a stronghold against the Japanese aggression. In recent decades, although development and the booming tour industry have added some commercial colors to this beautiful city, Guilin has remained the greenest and most scenic city in China.
Unlike most of the fast developing cities with skyscrapers, Guilin keeps its buildings relatively low because the people here do not want their beautiful peaks to be dwarfed.
Guilin is situated along the Li River, which is a great travel attraction itself. The beauty of the crystal-clear water and the karst peaks towering into the sky has attracted travelers and, particularly artists, to this area for centuries. The pointed peaks with sheer cliffs on all sides that you see in traditional Chinese paintings in museums are based on the reality of the Guilin Mountains. Therefore, it’s not surprising that we have a picture of the Li River on the 20-yuan bank note which awards Guilin a higher reputation nationwide.
As a tourist, one must take a boat trip down the Li River to enjoy the unique and picturesque mountains and to experience the local country life along the river.
The Li River trip is usually ended at a small town called Yangshuo, which has become something of a backpacker’s legend. The relaxing pace of life here, friendly people, good food, scenic beauty, rice fields and clear streams, country roads for cycling, all make it the paradise for those who wish to get a rest from the harsher aspects of life in the big cities. Yangshuo’s best sights include the Moon Hill, Big Banyan Tree, Green Lotus Peak and Yulong River.
The Terraced Fields, somehow considered one of the world’s wonders and only 85 km north of Guilin, are a great place highly recommended for those who wish to get a close look of the tribal life in China.Tribes like the Zhuang and Yao, officially recognized as minority groups, had moved from neighboring provinces and made their homes deep in the mountainous area to avoid social turbulences. They have successfully survived the hardship of life by cultivating in the narrow but long terraced fields high up on the big mountains for over 600 years. The history created by these tribal people is still a mystery to most of us!
Other remarkable scenic sights in town of Guilin that can be included in a city tour are: Elephant Hill, Reed Flute Cave and Fubo Hill.

(As an aside, what do you think about aka darkening the shadows of the windows? Is the lumber framing work in the background distracting or does it enhance the photo?)
Sometimes I find visual context helps when writing code. This is one example of a scratchpad for random thoughts.
Usually when I'm thinking in terms of coordinates, rows and columns or pixels as they relate to a grid pattern like this, it helps to draw outlines showing how the numbers correlate to the visuals.
In this case it was the "grid" (columns and rows of thumbnails) that I was working on. I knew scrolling, selection and rearrange would be important interactions that would need to be hashed out, once the photo items themselves has been defined as objects in JavaScript.
Later, primary controllers to be defined in JavaScript included the "display" (responsible for the current view), selection, events and state (sessionData) along with a few performance / browser limitation notes.
More fun background details on the grid are planned for a future code.flickr blog post.

Day 2. Starting to find my way around Sketchbook. I found two or three brushes I really like and a few methods for drawing and writing. Sketchbook is by far the best app for creating notes. I've tried Brushes and Adobe Ideas.

Either they are in a big hurry, or someone wanted to impress someone, or they had a discount deal on the cranes, or something. In any case, I found it quite impressive.
The White Stripes had a side show just three hours prior to their main performance. It consisted of one, and only one, note.
I thought it was pretty lame, though everyone else didn't think so.

I finally have received an email that will lead to the NASA contact I've been wanting. Here is part of it.
:: Permission to use your Photoshop Shuttle Reentry Photo
Hello,
First, I would like to comment that your "Normal Shuttle Entry" photo is a beautiful rendering, and I couldn't find anything else even relatively close to its quality! The reason I bring up this photo is my company produces shielding technology for reentry that NASA has shown great interest in, and I am currently writing an article about our material.
I would like to ask for your permission to use this photo in my article, and if the article gets published, include your photo in the magazine article... which would hopefully in turn get NASA's attention like you've mentioned you desire to accomplish and help both of us out....
...Thank you,
-Anthony Palma

Hi, Karolyn,
- that was fun today at Coffeetopia.
- here is the address of the entry image:
www.flickr.com/photos/doneastwest/186004657/in/set-720575...
- i'll just mention that the image is calibrated for a
Macintosh screen, which is brighter than a PC screen.
it would be easy to send them a PC version.
- i would also love to work on the image after
criticism.
- it is presently somewhat simplified- more like a diagram:
- the white on the wing is ok but the white would creep higher on the fuselage than i have shown.
- the blurring of the upper portion of the tail and fuselage is just an effort to show speed.

Feb. 11, 2009- more shuttle reentry image confirmation:
Hi Don,
I was wondering if I could obtain permission to use your wonderful shuttle graphic (with credit) within a Power Point presentation I am creating on Meteorites. The picture will be used to illustrate the effects of air friction on objects entering our atmosphere. The powerpoint presentation will be used periodically (maybe 2-3 times per year) for education outreach for local science museums, astronomy clubs, and other astronomy / science events. Let me know.
Thank you!

Several months ago, KCRW's Good Food did a segment on absinthe which made me start thinking about a spring garden party to sample it. She mentioned a particular brand, which I scrawled in a Grass Stain Green Field Notes Book, and today it paid off. Browsing the miniatures at the liquor store for treasures to sample, I immediately recognized this bottle as the brand I'd noted.
