People who are blind–Education
Place of Origin: Norwood, Greater London, England
Historical Note: The Royal Normal College and Academy of Music for the Blind opened on March 1, 1872. It was started by Francis Joseph Campbell, former head of the Perkins music department, who was blind, and Thomas Armitage, a philanthropist, physician, and surgeon who closed his practice when he lost his sight. Campbell (1832-1914) was principal at the College from 1872-1912. The students were trained in social skills and preparation for careers. Teachers for the Royal Normal College and Academy of Music for the Blind were recruited from Perkins, many of them his former colleagues. Among the teachers who left Perkins to join the Royal Normal College were Mary Greene, Joel West Smith, and Sophia Faulkner (who would become Campbell’s second wife in 1875 after Mary’s death in 1873). Campbell retired in 1912. In 1909, Campbell became a naturalized British subject and was knighted by King Edward VII to honor his contributions to the education of the blind.

Biographical Note: Lady Sophia Faulkner Campbell (1849-1933), was a teacher at the Perkins School for the Blind. In 1875 she married Sir Francis Joseph Campbell, a Perkins Alumnus and co-founder of the Royal Normal College and Academy of Music for the Blind in England. She was one of the teachers Cambell had recruited from Perkins when starting the college and as his wife served as a partner in the management and work there, and was even considered a coprincipal at one time. She would contribute to research and discourse on teaching students who are blind, which have since been considered ahead of their time.

For the new pool of Crocodile art. From my old first grade songbook. The crocodile family have all dislocated their jaws by yawning. Dr Pillman saves the day by breaking out the cod liver oil to grease the hinges.

This picture was taken about a week after Steve Jobs’ death at the Palo Alto, CA(his home) Apple store . The storefront was covered with post-it-notes written to him, thanking him for his contributions. Some of them were surprisingly poignant. As a big time Apple fan, I found it interesting and sadly, sweet. (see another shot below)

The Sewing Time Machine: A blouse named 'Secretary001'
The Sewing Time MachineWednesday, January 27, 2010A blouse named 'Secretary001'Here is my next project, or the inspiration for my next project. I'm no expert on the matter but this reminds me of a 40's pencil pushing office blouse, which is why I named it Secretary001.It looks to me like all the control has been shifted into side darts which were then gathered into the side seams. The sleeve looks like a very short kimono or dolman. Anyways, I got to work on the PatternMaster and this is my first muslin.
I'm not happy because I look like a bag lady!
So I learned that when zero waist darts are selected, the slack is not picked up anywhere else - not in the side seam and not in other darts. I'll have to manually shift all the control into the side dart. And that will be my second muslin....Posted by Marie-Anne at 6:28 PMLabels: blouse, fitting, PatternMaster Boutique0 comments:Post a CommentNewer Post Older Post HomeSubscribe to: Post Comments (Atom)PagesHomeAbout MeMarie-AnneWhen I'm not cleaning, cooking, or working, I'm going back in time....with my sewing machine!View my complete profileThis WeekChris' jacket is lined and it looks great. It is time for a new pack of Filofax Sticky Notes! I used up the yellow sticky notes months ago; however, I thought I would not use all the sticky tabs up at least until next year. Enter my Mid Term paper, which had depleted those within an hour! I had to find some sticky notes to finish! Tabbing my books and notes proved to be their demise!

While out cruising around and hiking the Gorge one day this Spring with David Cobb we stopped to photograph this scene. An area we both had passed before but never had taken the time to see the potential. As soon as I walked near this it jumped at me right away. Like I have said before these type of images are not for everyone which is fine by me. However, I like these at times as much or more than a dramatic landscape scene. These are real hidden gems. What you are looking at is alder trunks blending with the background of basalt rock. Basically it's almost a camouflage scene, hence the title.
I also want to thank all the workshop participants from the last couple weeks. We have had some good groups and it was a real pleasure to meet everyone. It's always exciting to see the energy and eagerness everyone brings each time to see new places and learn new tips.
As a side reminder, don't forget to remove your valuables when parking at trail heads in the Columbia River Gorge. Unfortunately we did see the aftermath of a break in where a photographer lost thousands of dollars in photo equipment left in their vehicle. We were lucky it was not our group yet I felt very bad for the person that had it happen. It's sad that we need to worry about it this much when out in natural scenic areas, that is for sure.
You can listen to the most recent episode #8 - Looking Beyond The Subject. I hope to have a new episode real soon. Sorry for the delay, Spring is a busy time. Listen to this episode

The return of the IMDB comments. I haven't done one of these for a month, because I haven't had the time (or the will, I have to admit) to take too long a drink from the well of idiocy. Still, this time, I think I managed to get some classic examples of the primitive art form that I'm sure will come to be known as message board haiku.

It's not a great picture, but it's got a great story behind it. While visiting my grandparent's farm in Michigan, my cousin Jim showed this to me in one of the barns, saying he and his sisters found the note years ago but have never been able to locate the other one. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find it either during my stay, but I suspect it may be in one barn where half the loft is still filled with large stacks of hay.
The note reads:
Hi, I'm 13 in '87. My name is Sheila Marie Taylor. I lived here from Feb. 29, '82 to July 17, '87. I loved this place & hope you do to. I'll miss it but it isn't that bad I have many wonderful memories. Have a fun time. Keep the memories worth keeping & with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.
Sheila
P.S. - Another note in another hayloft
