What is a Ramsar site?
Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention. The convention was developed and adopted by contracting nations at a meeting in Ramsar, Iran on February 2, 1971 and came into force on December 21, 1975. In January 2011, The Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance included 160 contracting parties covering over 1,900 sites (known as Ramsar sites) with a total area of over 187,984,550 km², up from 1,021 sites.
For the latest updates check Ramsar website: www.ramsar.org
UAE's first Ramsar site
With The UAE's accession, Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary (RAKWS) has become the Nation's first Ramsar wetland site. RAKWS is located at the head of the 14Km long watercourse known as Dubai Creek, and covers an area of 620 hectares featuring sabkhas saline flats, intertidal mudflats and mangroves, small lagoons and pools, and a few tiny islands which lies at the interface between the Persian Gulf and the Al Awir Desert.
During winter, RAKWS supports more than 20,000 water birds of 67 species and acts as a critical staging ground for the wintering birds of the East African-West Asian Flyway. The site hosts more than 500 species of flora and fauna and is one of the best-managed arid zone wetlands in the region. Located within Dubai city, it is an important eco-tourism destination and receives increasing numbers of local and international visitors.
The importance of RAKWS is beyond its aesthetic value. It serves as a beacon on the significance of biodiversity as a life supporting system for humanity's continual existence and its being an integral part of the cultural and traditional heritage of the UAE.

ABOUT THIS IMAGE
Island Silence
This image was made on my late May early June 2015 Road/Photo Trip, Someplace along the California Coast north of San Francisco.
For those of you that closely follow my photostream, you would have known that I was supposed to be out in California right now. To make a long story short, I ended up in the ER Monday night and the doctor advised that I do not fly/travel. I'm scheduled for surgery next Wednesday, so until I'm back on my feet, enjoy a sunset in Seattle I reworked from a few years ago.

ABOUT THIS IMAGE:
I captured this image on August 1, 2007 on a 3 week Alaskan photographic vacation of the Kenai Peninsula. This trip also included a train ride to Denali and a visit to inside the park. We also saw most of the Peninsula. There are far too many stories to tell for now. To say the least it was a Photographic Vacation of a Lifetime. On one day we drove from Nikiski to Homer along the Sterling Highway and found these old buoys. On Feb. 28, 2013 I took a relook at the image and after 5 ½ years with new techniques and knowledge I Repost Processed this image. I’m now beginning to have the tools and knowledge to bring to fruition the vision I have for my images. Meanwhile I keep experimenting and learning. There is always so much more to know.
For more about the town of Homer Refer to:
Green Bluff is a nice place to visit in October. It is just north of Spokane, Washington. The growers have family friendly events throughout the month. This tree lined lane is just off the loop road and is a popular spot for autumn color and portraits.
