ABOUT THIS IMAGE

The Bridge

On my Road/ Photo Trip I came upon many lucky surprises. This was one of them. Located in the Lady Bird Johnson Grove, I had just finished my walk in the grove and on the way back I came upon this bridge. I immediately recognized it because Alice Cahill a fantastic photographer and friend who is also in The Gallery at Marina Square with me has made this same image, although in color. Alice's image is Tremendous and I was hesitant on making my own image. I did. I had no idea this was the same place she had been. I saw a road that led to a fog shrouded forest and I took it.

The last part of our visit of the Romanesque churches in Le Puy-en-Velay (central France) takes us from today to the one that is possibly the most moving, and certainly the most spectacular of them all: the Saint Michael Chapel, perched on top of the Aiguilhe Rock, an enormous, 82 meters high geological dike made of hard basalt and left standing like a finger sticking out of the plain below by the erosion of all the sediment that once surrounded it.

There is only one way to get there: climb the hard, tall and uneven 268 steps carved out of the basalt, and in doing so, you will be following in the exact footsteps, not only of the millions of Compostela pilgrims that came here over the centuries, but also of innumerable historic figures, among which the Kings of France Charles VII, Louis XI and Charles VIII, who ascended the rock to pray under the humble vaults of the chapel.

According to persistent legends, the first edifice built on top of the rock of Aiguilhe (notice how close the name is to the French word aiguille, i.e., needle) was a Roman temple dedicated to Mercury. No trace of such a sanctuary was ever found by archæologists. The chapel that one can see today was built in two successive phases. First, the initial and very small square chapel, probably with three apses but only two remain today. This was built soon after 950, either by bishop Godescalc (who had been the first French pilgrim of Compostela in 950–51), or more probably by Truannus, dean of the canons of the cathedral chapter, duly authorized by Godescalc. I have not been able to find any definitive evidence pointing to one rather than the other. What is documented, however, is that the finished chapel was consecrated by the said bishop in 961. It was a pre-Romanesque monument.

Secondly, during the late 1000s, the primitive oratory was “surrounded” and augmented by a Romanesque chapel built on the flattened top of the dike. In the process, the probable third apse of the oratory was destroyed to open a way of access between the newly built “nave” and the square space of the oratory, repurposed as “choir”. The best way to understand the layout if to have a look at the floor plan drawn by architect Mallay in the 19th century, here: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Plan_de_la_chapelle_Saint.... The imposing bell tower was also built at the same time.

General view of the dike and the chapel, looking to the southwest. The original, pre-Romanesque oratory is the squarish part that can be seen on the right. It is duly oriented and built in coarse apparel with lots of mortar. The Romanesque part “wraps” around the primitive edifice and is much better built.

The most recent part is the façade, from the late 1100s.

The chapel was listed as a Historic Landmark by Prosper Mérimée, General Inspector of the Monuments historiques on the very first list of 1840.

boy wanting a kick around.

The new hall for the Messe Basel includes 50 000 square meters of exhibition space that spreads across two windowless floors, each 8 meters high. This large volume is clad into a shimmering facade of interwoven metal strips, with each of floors slightly offset. The ground floor, enclosed in glass, is designed for public use and is shaped so as to form a "city lounge" - a covered plaza that opens to the sky through a large, mesmerizing oculus.

I added a bit of drama to the clouds using Nik´s Color Efex Pro :)

This is one of New York's newest and greatest attraction a series of interconnected stairs that will probably become iconic when they used as a location for a movie.

The person on the floor is a professional photographer who was taking pictures of the family with the dog. She had them all lined up dog, humans and background when another family wandered into shot. She then shouted at them at the top of her voice to get out of the way. I was amazed, I wouldn't have the balls to do that. The things you have to do to make a living in New York

As my flickr followers have seen have taken a break with the main camera and posted some mobile shots over the last few months and not all of them have been that great but to tell the truth I have enjoyed taking them and some of them have been winners and yes of course some losers.

So far this year its been great and also some disapointments.

Got engaged to my beautiful girlfriend which has been the greatest thing thats happened to me and looking forward to spending the rest of my life with her.

The disapointing news mmm not going into to much detail but when someone comes along and makes you a offer of a opportunity that could change your photography and the direction it could go in please make sure the offer stands and don`t pull out after as it does leave a sour taste in ones mouth.

So here we are a statement heres to what you are missing out on.

Be happy people and dont let anyone take you for a fool and let the photography do the talking.

One unexpected bonus for adopting new cats (kittens, actually): they find the weirdest things. The kittens were really fascinated by something at our back glass door. I looked over and noticed it was moving. It was a 3.5 foot long black rat snake. I was able to get a photo of it just as it was slithering under our neighbor's back porch.

Rat snakes are not a bad thing to have around as they keep the rodent population down and are not hazardous nor dangerous to humans. Just an unusual sight to see in your own backyard when you didn't expect to see one.

This has been the week to see unusual sights for animals (a jumping spider, multiple blue birds, red-shouldered hawk, all within the past five days).

UPDATE: I had no idea that this image made it on to Flickr's Explore page for May 30, 2020 (No. 430 out of 500). Thank you for taking the time to look at this photo and a great big THANK YOU to those who marked this image as one of your favorites.
