I made this shot from the bank of a river where herons often fly close to the water. There's an active landfill [garbage dump] on the opposite bank, so It's not as scenic as other places that I visit. Fortunately, the landfill makes a good backdrop for flight photos.

Night time near Spitalfields London in December 2015.

The scientific / Latin name, Nycticorax, means "night raven", and refers to this species' nocturnal habits and harsh crow-like calls.

The Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) is the most widespread heron in the world, breeding on every continent except Antarctica and Australia, where the genus is represented by the Nankeen (or Rufous) Night-Heron (Nycticorax caledonicus). Although widespread and common in North America, its coloration and behavior, as well as its nocturnal and crepuscular feeding habits -- especially outside the breeding season -- render it less noticeable than many diurnal herons. This heron is an opportunistic forager that feeds on a wide variety of terrestrial organisms, but its diet consists primarily of fish and other freshwater and marine organisms.

Usually forages by standing still or walking slowly at edge of shallow water. May perch above water on pilings, stumps, small boats. Forages mostly from late evening through the night, but also by day during breeding season or in unusual weather.

I found this banded one fishing at one of the spillways at Three Lakes Wildlife ManagementArea in Osceola County Florida.
