After slugging through a 10mph speed restriction through most of Ashtabula, the engineer on the Q22729 takes all eight notches as he works to get the train back up to track speed. The classic SD40-2 leader coughs up some smoke as it splits the intermediates at QD132. With all the signals west of 132 having already been replaced, that means these guys are up next and are on borrowed time.
What is next? A beloved question my grandpa in law would ask me. He was always prepared for the next wonderful adventure life would bring. So I dare to ask you, “What is next?’. Ponder on what is on the other side of your bridge and get ready for the wonderful adventure that is to come!

Having completed turning this welded rail train on the yard lead via CPF 197 and 196 this CSXT/Pan Am Rigby yard crew is headed back to the yard with the train as they catch the last glow of evening sun. It will be doubled to the rear of M426 and head to Waterville the next morning ultimately destined for the track project going on between Northern Maine Junction and Mattawamkeag as CSXT rebuilds the old Maine Central mainline they purchased last year.
The crew has a nice merger pair of geeps in the form of MEC 514 and CSXT 2548, the former of which is a GP40-2W blt. Apr. 1976 as CN 9655 and the latter a GP38-2 blt. Nov. 1973 as SCL 548 and delivered in black and yellow. They are on Main 1 of 1500 ft long double track bridge over the Fore River with the warehouses of Merrill's Marine Terminal (owned by New England based Sprague Energy since 2005), an important railroad customer, visible at center behind the train.

I grabbed the camera just as this little guy started looking over at my apartment. Pictured through a fly screen window, I think I got its undivided attention.
He / she is such a cute little kitten. Pity about the fly screen, but what can you do.

A few SD60's were still hanging on to their Soo Line colors in the fall of 2014, including SOO 6024, seen just west of Brooten, MN on the point of a grain train on October 10. This would be the penultimate chance I had to photograph one of these locomotives leading a train.
