‘Hubo muchas mujeres que estaban embarazadas al momento de su detención. Esto no impedía que se le realizaran torturas. Los partos se llevan a cabo en condiciones inhumanas, muchas veces dentro de los mismos Centros Clandestinos de Detención. Luego de parir, muchas de ellas eran desaparecidas y sus hijos, en la mayoría de los casos, entregados a manos de militares o civiles relacionados con las fuerzas armadas. Esto no hubiese sido posible sin la participación de médicos y enfermeras que formaban parte de este sistema de apropiación y desaparición.’

On Thursday 12th August ASU organiser and members visited Mike Symon, member for Deakin, to discuss with him their Pay Equity campaign and get him to sign on to their Pay Equity Pledge. It's hard to believe but on average Australian women are paid 18 per cent less than men. The ASU has been fighting a campaign for that last 12 months to ensure that the pay gap is closed and are looking to Federal and State governments to support equal pay for community workers. In signing the Pledge Mike agreed “to work with my party to ensure that the services have the funds they need to meet the costs of equal pay without the need to cut services.”
Activists of all ages gathered for an afternoon of art, music and politics at our third Democracy Cafe in Mill Valley. This month, we looked into solutions to end gun violence, through a range of activities designed to inspire us to action. We started the day by making signs for the ‘March for Our Lives’ rally. We then sang along with the Freedom Singers. Marin County Supervisor Kate Sears led a group discussion on gun reform. Young singer Emma Spike performed songs of hope, and music director Reed Fromer led a final sing-along with some classic tunes about social change.
This free public event took place on Sunday, March 18th from 2 to 5pm, at the O'Hanlon Center for the Arts in Mill Valley. We were delighted to see many young people come make their own signs against gun violence, then stay to sing and talk with us.
Thanks to all our friends and neighbors who came to join their voices, minds and hearts to energize each other and create a better world. Kudos to our co-hosts Marilyn Price, Jennifer Tomkins, Rebecca Brackman, Grace Severtson -- and everyone who helped us organize this uplifting community event.
Democracy Cafe is a series of free creative and civic events led by Fabrice Florin and a growing community of activists and artists in Marin. We think making art, playing music and talking with people of all ages and backgrounds can build mutual understanding and engage us to take meaningful political action together.
