Rob Hamelijnck and Nienke Terpsma, the artists and editors of Rotterdam-based magazine Fucking Good Art (www.fuckinggoodart.nl) were ‘embedded’ on Maasvlakte for a month during August–September 2009 from where they produced Portscapes_ON AIR Station Maasvlakte.
Comprising a series of audio walks, field recordings and conversations with guests from different disciplines Portscapes_ON AIR Station Maasvlakte was broadcast on Portscapes' website (www.portscapes.nl). Inspired by their camp’s proximity to the pipeline which carries sand from the Yangtzehaven to the future Maasvlakte 2, the editors of FGA approached their endeavour both as inhabitants of an industrial and man-made territory and in relation to the redistribution and displacement of knowledge. Alongside other grand movements of transportation and trade taking place in the port, FGA’s broadcasts took shape through encounters to reflect on the role that art and artists have in other registers of exchange. Starting from the principle that to understand a place one needs to inhabit it, and the question of how to represent a place like Maasvlakte 2 which does not yet entirely exist yet, the editors of FGA also aimed to stimulate discussion about the representation of Dutch landscape. They hope their project can be a pilot for further research residencies.

On June 30, 2014, the BLM hosted the 2014 Seed Conference to celebrate 20 years of public-private partnerships for native plant conservation. The Conference brought together 12 federal agencies to renew a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that continues the work of the Federal Native Plant Conservation Committee of the Plant Conservation Alliance (PCA) and its cooperators in State government and non-government organizations. The PCA is a public-private partnership of governments and non-government organizations that share the same goal of protecting native plants by ensuring that native plant populations and their communities are maintained, enhanced, and restored.
The MOU commits Federal agencies to bolster the collective capacity of the PCA Committee to leverage funds and tools through efforts with non-federal partners. The MOU calls for Federal agencies to assist non-Federal land managers in plant conservation and protection efforts. It also calls for innovative partnerships among public and private sectors, nationally and internationally, to conserve native plants and their habitats before they become critically endangered.
Under the MOU, the Committee agrees to identify and recommend, as appropriate, priority conservation needs for native plants and their habitats and coordinate implementation of programs for addressing those needs.
The Committee Members include the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Federal Highway Administration, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, United States Botanic Garden, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service, USDA Forest Service, USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Geological Survey.

2016 has been the year of “plus”–nearly every mountain bike manufacturer in the world has released a skinny-fat offering in its lineup. And while this new category of 3-inch-wide tires still needs to figure itself out, I can at least feel confident in saying that it’s great for trail hardtails.

The Jamis Dragonslayer is the company’s latest addition to its line of steel hardtails, and it’s built for capability, durability and flexibility. Its 4130 chromoly tubing is triple butted for weight reduction and ride feel, and the frame features sliding dropouts for singlespeed compatibility. Since it is an obvious choice for bikepacking, it’s outfitted with rack mounts and a 3-hole bottle mount, and the traditional double triangle design means it’ll fit a large frame bag.
As for geometry, some of the Dragonslayer’s numbers are right where you’d expect them for a modern trail bike designed around a 120-mil fork, with 68- and 73-degree head and seat angles respectively and 17.2-inch chainstays. But the 19-inch size sports a 16.7-inch reach coupled with stock Ritchey Trail 720-mil bars and 80-mil stem, which could be considered conservative these days. The Dragonslayer might be perfect for riders not interested in running crazy short stems on super long frames, which is the way mountain bike fit is trending.
The 3-inch “plus-size” Vittoria Bomboloni tires mounted on WTB i45 TCS 27.5 rims provide oodles of traction in places where you’d expect none–a huge asset on the marbles-over-hardpack conditions at Bootleg canyon. They also grant an impressive amount of floatation in sand without feeling sluggish like a fatbike. They seemed pretty tough, too. I bottomed the tires hard enough to dent the rim at one point, without flatting or burping–and they survived the sharp, rocky terrain of Bootleg Canyon, which is a feat in and of itself.
Overall, I had an enlightening and fun ride on the Dragonslayer. Each slippery corner and technical climb came and went with increasing ease, and with surprisingly little compromise. And with a $2,700 price tag, it’s a bargain, too.

The good old steel hardtail receives a technology injection

The 2017 Jamis Dragonslayer–a plus-size version of the company’s popular Dragon steel hardtail–will be hitting the trails later this summer with a whole lot of extra grip. Plus-size seems to be the theme here at his year’s Sea Otter Classic, with many of the top mountain bike manufacturers showing off their baby fat offerings for the first time. So why does everyone seem to be slapping 3-inch tires on bikes all at once? Boost 148, which made its debut on Trek’s Remedy 29 last year, was designed to create a stiffer, stronger 29-inch wheel–but it opened up a Pandora’s box of new bike design. The wider rear-end required bringing the chainrings out by a few millimeters, which gave bike designers much more real estate to play with. So people got creative, and tires and forks became available. All of a sudden, a new category was born.

It turns out that 3-inch tires are bringing forth the rebirth of the hardtail, and with it, a whole new beginning of mountain biking. When people started riding off-road, it was purely for fun. Since then, we somehow let things get serious on us. What better way to get back to our mountain biking roots than with a steel hardtail? With trail geometry and the added grip and confidence that plus-size tires bring to the table, we imagine the Dragonslayer will be a full-on grin machine. You can be sure that we’ll be throwing a leg over one when it becomes available later this year.
The Dragonslayer uses a now relatively narrow 73-millimeter standard English-threaded bottom bracket shell, so serious shaping is needed to get that wide, Boost 148 rear-end attached to the shell. It looks like Jamis was proud enough of its sleek chainstay yoke to slap some 3D branding on it. As you can see, tire clearance won’t be a problem on the Dragonslayer. The bike comes stock with the Vittoria Bombolini 27.5×3.0-inch tires pictured, with plenty of room for the wheel to come forward in the Dragon’s horizontal drops. Its 17.1-inch chainstays should be stubby enough for most riders as well.
The Dragonslayer comes spec’d with solid parts all around. Shimano supplies the brakes and drivetrain with a mix of Deore and SLX, while the bike rolls on WTB Scraper i45 rims.
Shimano is supporting Boost 148 now too, even though it was born from a Trek and SRAM partnership. This is good for everyone because for the price, you can’t beat the shift performance of Shimano’s mid-range groups.
Though its name hints at the bike’s trail-destroying nature, Jamis equips the Dragonslayer for the long slog too–rack mounts are provided for the adventurer in all of us.

7 1/2 month old, Addison finally learnt sitting up properly, but still needs some pillow to support. It is a bit later than most of kids as he is such a big boy, simply doesn't have enough strength to support himself.
Can you please help in identifying this bird which I have never seen in my garden before? It's size was a little larger than starlings and it was feeding from my seed feeders and the starlings unsuccessfully were trying to persuade it to leave. My garden is on the west central part of Scotland in the UK, I have looked through the RSPB garden bird book but failed to identify this one myself. Better shot in the comments below, my apologies for the poor focus as this was shot from an upstairs window handheld with no time to prepare.
This needs to be viewed small. The experience of the image falls apart when viewed too large. In fact, there is really only one "good" viewing size for soft focus images. Find that size and the magic unfolds.

雪山聖稜線連結雪山山脈雪山主峰與大霸尖山的稜脈，海拔高度均在3,100公尺以上，從雪山主峰到雪山北峰之間的稜脊，更在3,580公尺上，在這條壯麗 巍峨的巨嶺之上，岩峰嶙峋峭拔，巉巖突兀的高峰縱列，愛山人必須戰戰兢兢地克服險阻，橫越萬難，才能安全地完成縱走聖稜的心願，岳界有句話：走完聖稜， 終於可以結婚了！意思就是說：走過這一條困難重重的路線，年輕人才能有擔當，可以擔起家庭的重任。
聖稜之名，緣於西元1928年(昭和3年)，也就是大霸尖山首登(昭和2年)後的一年，當時的台灣山岳會總幹事沼井鐵太郎，在發表關於「關於攀登大霸 尖山之考察與實行」乙文中，描述了這一段稜線：「…為了縱走這條岩稜，需要相當於首登大霸尖山的準備。…這神聖的稜線啊，誰能真正地完成這大霸 尖山至雪山的縱走，戴上勝利的榮冠，述說首次完成縱走的真與美！…」。從此之後，這條神聖的稜線即深深地烙印在愛山人的心靈裡。 昭和六年(西元1931 年)，聖稜線這條大霸尖山、雪山之間險峻無雙的高連山脈，才真正首次被純粹登山家以繩索隊伍橫斷完成，開啟了聖稜線輝煌的山岳歷史。
這條昔日的探險級縱走路線，隨著時代的推演，縱走的隊伍漸漸地踏出一條明晰的途徑；民國六O年代之後的百岳登峰運動與七O、八O年代的社團雪山 六路會師登山運動，更吸引了眾多的隊伍，在這條神聖的稜線上活動，而傳統的聖稜線行程－大霸尖山到雪山主峰，已無法滿足愛好翻山越嶺的登山癡迷，於是有 人把行程延伸，加入了武陵四秀的行程，成了"聖稜ㄚ型"或是"聖稜O型"；"ㄚ"型就是從武陵農場起攀，先縱走桃山、喀拉業山、 池有山與品田山之後，續走塔克金溪經霸南，以輕裝往返大霸群山，再循傳統聖稜路線至雪山主峰；"O"型則是在縱走武陵四秀後，直接從品田山西側垂 降品田斷崖，再於布秀蘭山接上傳統聖稜的路線。多變的組合與選擇，讓聖稜線成為雪山山脈最著名的縱走路線。

Owing to the well-known Dabajian Mountain, Daba Peaks Trail becomes the most popular and famous mountain trail. That the beds in Jiujiu Hut （99 Hut） are always reserved in consecutive holidays proves how popular this trail is.
Lying in the north, Daba Peaks is a big branch of Xue Mountain Range, diverging from Buxiulan Mountain. This ridge radiates from Dabajian Mountain as the axis and forms 4 trails in 4 directions. On the east is Dongbajian Mountain Trail consisting of 5 peaks and overhanging cliffs; on the west is Xiaobajian Mountain Trail with precipitous crags and singular peak; on the north is Mayang Mountain Trail covering Takejin Creek and Sakeyajin Creek as the major mountain area in Jianshih Township of Hsinchu County that breeds Atayal people there; on the northwest is Yizhe Mountain Trail, the major one of Daba Peaks, which includes 5 over-3,000-meter mountains: Jiali Mountain (3,112), Yeba-ao Mountain (3,192), Yizhe Mountain (3,297), and Jhongbajian Mountain (3,392). Daba Peaks Trail needs climbers to stride across those mountains in order to reach the base of majestic Dabajian Mountain.
First climbed by people in 1927, Dabajian Mountain signifies a sacred mountain fascinating mountaineers all the time. Especially after Trailhead of Madara Creek was set up, more and more climbers and mountaineering teams flood in. Visiting this area takes 3 days on average.

Connecting Main Peak of Xue Mountain and Dabajian Mountain, Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) is over 3,100 meters, even over 3,580 meters between Main Peak and North Peak of Xue Mountain. There are many jagged, rugged rocks and steep, cliffy escarpments along the trail. Those who love mountain climbing have to overcome all difficulties with feat and trepidation, then able to finish this significant ridge. As an old saying in the mountain climbing realm goes, “those who finish Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) are qualified to get married.” It means only when a young man breaks through all difficulties along this trail can he shoulder the responsibility of having a family.
Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) was first described in an article written by a Japanese climber in 1928 and was named after the publication of the article. Moreover, it was first conquered in 1931 by a team of mountaineers with the help of ropes.
As time flies, more and more teams tried to climb Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail), resulting in a clear passage already. Many other mountain climbing activities held in the 60s, 70s, and 80s even attracted more crowds to step on this trail. Till now, the traditional route of Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail)—from Dabajian Mountain to Main Peak of Xue Mountain—cannot satisfy dedicated alpinists any more. Some of them, therefore, extend the route by including that of Wuling Quadruple Mountains, arranging “Shengling Y-shaped Trail” “Shengling O-shaped Trail.” Shengling Y-shaped Trail starts from Wuling Farm, across Tao Mountain, Kalahei Mountain, Chihyou Mountain, and Pintian Mountain, keep walking along Takejin Creek to pass Banan, go to Daba Peaks and back with a light pact, and follow the traditional route of Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) to mount Main Peak of Xue Mountain. Shengling O-shaped Trail also starts from Wuling Quadruple Mountains, descends from Pintian Cliff on the west side of Pintian Mountain, and gets to the traditional route of Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) by Buxiulan Mountain. These various choices make this trail the most popular route to approach Xue Mountain Range.
The last Mk I variant to be produced using the Tritec engine was the Mini Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit: a light-weight, quasi-race-prepped John Cooper Works model. Hand-finished by Bertone in Italy, it was offered as a limited-production run of 2000 cars during the 2006 model year, with 444 of those originally intended for the UK market (although ultimately, 459 were sold). The GP features more bolstered front seats but had no rear seats, which along with reduced sound-deadening, removal of the rear wash-wipe system, optional air-conditioning, and other weight-reduction steps, resulted in a weight saving of around 40 kg (88 lb) compared to a Cooper S. Additionally, the car had enhanced braking, suspension, a smooth under-body and 218 hp (163 kW) from the John Cooper Works engine modification package. In place of the rear seats there is additional body stiffening and below-floor storage areas. The car also offered many unique styling points, such as the red door mirrors, a carbon fiber rear spoiler, unique body kit, bespoke (2 kg lighter) 4-spoke alloy wheels, and specialised badging. Available in just one colour scheme (Thunder Blue with a Pure Silver roof), each car was individually numbered and featured a decal on the roof along with a plaque on the dashboard. The last of the supercharged Minis and a genuine Limited Edition model, there is a high potential for the Mini Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit to become a collector's item.

I didn't like the swan shape much at all. Just couldn't get comfortable with the 'flow' of the wings and tail feathers

Completely fell in love with the elephant. It's a fun one to doodle in! Will be using the elephants on a new website I'm creating in 2010. The Rainbow Elephant... coming soon!
