The Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, so called from its forked tail, is one of the largest hummingbirds in cities and gardens, but it also occurs in gallery forests, bushy pastures and edges of woods or coppices. It is green, except for the blue head and upper breast, turning to iridescent purple according to the direction of light; it has dark wings and a heavy black bill. The tail is dark blue with the external feathers longer than central ones. It is very aggressive and attacks other hummingbirds that dare to visit flowers in certain trees. Where the flowers are available for many months, the individual is fiercely territorial, but generally needs to search soon for other flowering plants. It flies to catch small insets on or under leaves in the gallery forests or woodlands. The female builds a small cup-shaped nest saddled on a branch, not far from the main trunk in the shade of leaves. Perched on favorite branches, the male can utter long but low chirps. Once in a while, it interrupts these singing sessions to feed, and flies back for more song or to clean the plumage. They occur from the Guianas and Amazon River to Paraguay and southeastern Peru. They can get along with partially deforested zones, but may disappear with intensive agriculture and with the development of treeless cities.

Description:
This is a large upright tree with glossy deep green pinnate leaves and glorious orange scarlet flowers. It may grow to 80 ft (24.4 m) on an ideal site, but most specimens are much smaller. The tree has a stout, tapering, somewhat buttressed trunk covered in warty light gray bark. The lateral branches are short and thick. The 1-2 ft (0.3-0.6 m) long opposite leaves, which emerge a bronzy color, are massed at the ends of the branches. They are composed of 5-19 deeply veined oval leaflets. The horn shaped velvety olive buds appear in upturned whorls at the branch tips. A few at a time, the buds of the lowest tier bend outward and open into big crinkled red orange tuliplike bells with red streaked gold throats, frilly yellow edges, and four brown-anthered stamens in the center. They are followed by 5-10 in (12.7-25.4 cm) green brown fingerlike pods pointing upwards and outwards above the foliage. Each of these pods contains about 500 tissue papery seeds. The tree flowers in spurts all through the growing season, but peak bloom is usually in the spring. 'Aurea' is a rare cultivar with yellow to orange flowers and tends to be a smaller tree.
Location:
African tuliptree comes from the rainforests of Equatorial Africa. It is widely planted throughout the tropics and has naturalized in many parts of the Pacific. It favors moist habitats below 3,000 ft (914 m), but will grow on drier sites and thrives at up to 4,000 ft (1219 m). The biggest trees grow in moist, sheltered ravines.
Culture:
This species loves rich soil, but puts up with just about anything with a little fertility to it, including limerock. It is not a beachfront plant, but will survive a bit of salinity. African tuliptrees need serious pruning after every freeze or windstorm. Gardeners in marginal regions should plan on growing this as a large ephemeral shrub and plant it in a sheltered place where it can be reached by ladders or bucket trucks for regular pruning and removal of dead branches.
Light: African tuliptree will survive in shade, but demands full sun for fast growth and best flowering.
Moisture: These trees grow best with plenty of moisture, but will shed their leaves and endure drought.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 10 - 11. African tuliptrees drop their leaves when chilled and freeze easily, but they come back from the roots vigorously and often bloom the next season. Top growth will be killed at 28-30ºF (-2.2 - -1.1ºC), but the roots may survive down to 22ºF (-5.6ºC) or below.
Propagation: In the wild, the flowers are pollinated by birds and bats and the seeds are dispersed by wind. In cultivation, African tuliptrees often are grown from seed, but seed production is erratic. New specimens can be started from tip cuttings, root cuttings, or suckers.

Usage:
African tuliptrees are grown for shade, color and tropical effects. The wood is difficult to burn, so the tree is also valuable for fire resistant landscaping. The wood has been used for blacksmith's bellows and the like. The buds contain a liquid that will squirt out if they are squeezed or pierced and children enjoy using these as water pistols. They also enjoy playing with the boatlike open seed pods. In Africa and Haiti, the flowers are thought to have magical properties and the wood is used for witch doctors' wands.
Features:
This is one of the world's most spectacular flowering trees. It is also very fast growing. Young trees may put on 6 ft (0.6 m) in height and 2 in (10.2 m) in diameter per year and often begin blooming when they are only a few years old.
WARNING:
African tuliptrees have weak, brittle wood and tend to become hollow and drop large branches as they age, so they are easily shattered by high winds. This tree is also inclined to become invasive in suitable genuinely tropical environments and is regarded as an exotic problem species in Hawaii, Fiji, French Polynesia, and Samoa. In such places, African tuliptree invades both abandoned farmland and mature forests, where the seeds germinate rapidly and form understory thickets from which a few saplings eventually grow into the canopy. Although African tuliptree is not typically thought of as a toxic plant, African hunters are said to have boiled the seeds to extract arrow poison.

West Midlands Special Needs Transport (or wmsnt as carried on the front of the bus), had a penchant for the Plaxton Primo building up a fleet of them from a variety of sources, KX57FMJ arriving from Mid Wales Motors. Most operated in this plain white livery, remaining so when the company rebranded itself as iGO. The Plaxton Primo was an integral model developed as the Enterprise Plasma in Hungary, but finished, and sold for the UK bus market by Plaxton during the companies brief independence after the collapse of Transbus. The Primo was intended as a competitor to the Optare Solo in the small midibus market, but its driveline, with tranverse Cummins engine (leading to the short rear overhang), was just one of the shortcomings that led operators to dispose of them with indignant haste.
The buck was about to drink from a stream when a Wood Duck landed. The buck jumped back and watched the duck swim away. I was startled too so my presence was revieled and the deer never got close again.

As those of you who follow my stream will know I've been a little bit ill of late, but today I forced myself to go for a wander out in the woods and inspired by Tonys Brenizer method shot I thought I would have a go myself.
This was 124 individual shots, trimmed down to about 80 with cropping, stitched together. The end result was a 100Mb 28578 x 18590 image. My PC is an overclocked Intel i7 with 8Gb of RAM and it was just about ready to melt after stitching this!

Lassie certainly had no qualms about waking little Timmy Martin to help in an emergency. On the TV series "Lassie," which ran from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s, the dog frequently came to Timmy's bedroom to let him know that someone needed help.
Here, Leo plays Timmy:
As he goes to bed, Timmy Martin is happy to think that all is well in the world.
"Everything is so peaceful, girl," he says to Lassie. "Let's go to sleep."
A few hours later, Lassie hears a noise from afar. She is alarmed and feels she must investigate what it is. She jumps out of Timmy's open bedroom window and follows the direction from which the sound came.
Suddenly, Timmy is awakened by the sound of Lassie barking at the foot of his bed.
"What's wrong, girl?"
Lassie trots to the window, expecting Timmy to know that he should follow.
When Timmy simply looks at her without moving, Lassie returns to his bed and barks again.
(In every episode, Lassie's bark seems to contain unique, subliminal communication skills that let people know their help is urgently needed somewhere)
Timmy: "You mean that a plane crashed in the woods and the pilot is stuck underneath and needs our help? Show me the way, girl!"
Timmy and Lassie go to the crash site in the woods and help the pilot pull his leg from under the plane.
Another rescue!
**Actually, in one episode, Lassie, Timmy and his friend helped get a pilot out of his plane that crashed in the woods. I've taken creative license.

In June I had dinner with Pascal in Heidelberg, and he very generously brought some parts for me to take home. Here’s a first installment in return, Pascal!
LEGO purists, avert your eyes! These are unofficial parts of course. I think they’re designed for use in games on hex-based maps. Getting them lined up properly in standard LEGO units is part of the fun.
One needs not a keen eye to catch a scene as this at this rookery. However, a quick camera swing and fast focus is a must, as the distance from the mainland shore to the island is short. Lifting camera and monopod combination off the ground and to the eye for an overhead shot just adds to the challenge.

I drew this right before I dove into the big job of cleaning the pantry. This is only the bottom part of the closet, for there are three more shelves above that don't come out to the door facing. What a mess. What a huge bag of outdated food I threw out. What a waster I am. I buy things and forget that I bought them. I know I am going to cook very little, but still I am tempted. I really enjoy this style of drawing. I used the watercolor graphite and the black was again a Pentel brush pen of black ink.

Sankt Nikolai kyrka (Church of St. Nicholas), most commonly known as Storkyrkan (The Great Church) and Stockholms domkyrka (Stockholm Cathedral), is the oldest church in Gamla Stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden. It is an important example of Swedish Brick Gothic. Situated next to the Royal Palace, it forms the western end of Slottsbacken, the major approach to the Royal Palace, while the streets Storkyrkobrinken, Högvaktsterrassen, and Trångsund pass north and west of it, respectively. South of the church is the Stockholm Stock Exchange Building facing the Stortorget square and containing the Swedish Academy, Nobel Library, and Nobel Museum.
Storkyrkan was first mentioned in a written source dated 1279 and according to tradition was originally built by Birger Jarl, the founder of the city itself. For nearly four hundred years it was the only parish church in the city, the other churches of comparable antiquity originally built to serve the spiritual needs of religious communities (e.g., Riddarholm Church). It became a Lutheran Protestant church in 1527. The parish church since the Middle Ages of the Nikolai parish, covering the whole island on which the Old Town stands, it has also been the cathedral of Stockholm since the Diocese of Stockholm was created out of the Archdiocese of Uppsala and the Diocese of Strängnäs in 1942. Because of its convenient size and its proximity to the earlier royal castle and the present royal palace it has frequently been the site of major events in Swedish history, such as coronations, royal wedding and royal funerals. The last Swedish king to be crowned here was Oscar II in 1873. Crown Princess Victoria, oldest daughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, was married to Daniel Westling on 19 June 2010 in Storkyrkan, the same date on which her parents were also married in Storkyrkan in 1976.
The most famous of its treasures is the dramatic wooden statue of Saint George and the Dragon attributed to Bernt Notke (1489). The statue, commissioned to commemorate the Battle of Brunkeberg (1471), also serves as a reliquary, containing relics supposedly of Saint George and two other saints. A bronze copy from the early 20th century is found on Österlånggatan just south of the church.
The church also contains a copy of the oldest known image of Stockholm, the painting Vädersolstavlan ("The Sun Dog Painting"), a 1632 copy of a lost original from 1535. The painting was commissioned by the scholar and reformer Olaus Petri, a 19th-century statue of whom is found on the eastern side of the church. It depicts a halo display, e.g. sun dogs, which gives the painting its name and in the 16th century was interpreted as a presage.
The monumental pulpit is the work of Burchard Precht in 1698-1702 and is in a French Baroque style. It became the model for a number of other large pulpits in Sweden. From the rear of its lofty sounding board issues widely billowing dragery, in front of which hover two large winged genii on either side of a radiant sun bearing the Hebrew letters יהוה. The relief on the front of the pulpit itself depicts the story of the Canaanite woman (Matthew 15:21-28). The door of the pulpit is adorned with a relief of Christ's head, while its pediment is crowned by a statue of Hope with putti on either side. Below the memorial are the arms of the Funck family who bore the greater cost of the pulpit. Beneath the pulpit and surrounded by an iron railing lies the worn gravestone of Olaus Petri.
The view down the central aisle of the church is dominated on either side by the Royal Pews, one facing the other on either side of the central aisle. They were designed by the celebrated architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and made by Burchard Precht. Each consists of a large enclosed box with decorated sides and back. High above each of the Royal Pews is a large royal crown forming a canopy above it, supported by two genii in flowing mantles, and from which billow sculptured hangings behind the royal seat, while above hover numerous putti. The royal seats are themselves upholstered in blue velvet with rich applied embroidery.
The main altar--"The Silver Altar"—is a wooden triptych with an ebony veneer with sculptured reliefs in silver in ascending order of the Last Supper on the predella; a large depiction of the Crucifixion of Christ between silver statues of Moses and John the Baptist in niches with small silver columns on either side; of the Burial of Christ (between silver statues of the evangelists Matthew and Mark; of Christ's Harrowing of Hell (between statues of the evangelists John and Luke; and on the pediment at top of the triptych, a silver statue of the Risen Christ between two reclining soldiers.
On either side of the Silver Altar is a sculpture holding a candle, one of St. Nicholas (the patron of the church) and the other of St. Peter, both designed by G. Torhamn and carved in oak by the sculptor Herbst in 1937. The rose window above and behind the Silver Altar was made in Paris in the 1850s, the first of a series of modern stained windows in the church contributed by various donors. The Silver Altar and the rose window above it fill the wall space formerly occupied by the apse of the medieval chancel removed by Gustavus Vasa when he expanded the fortifications of the Tre Kronor Castle, while the statue of the Olaus Petri monument at the back exterior of the church stands on the site of the medieval high altar.
The organ currently hiding inside the 1772 organ facade is made in 1960 by the firm Marcussen & Son in Aabenra, Denmark. The organ is all mechanic, has 54 voices spread over four manuals and pedal.

The Sumatran Orangutan at the Cincinnati Zoo is usually one not to disappoint. This day I was treated to a different side of this usually playful creature. Sitting somberly staring off into space showing an almost human expression. Capture Cincinnati submission 2008.
Starting in the very first issue, the Gold Key artists confused communicators with tricorders. You can't really blame them I guess, the tricorder was a more realistically large piece of equipment (a handheld phone was nearly unimaginable in 1968!). Plus it had that screen for video communication.
Mr Wallace, a recruitment company owner was inspired by a children's book, depicting Santa delivering presents in a ute with kangaroos in the back, to put together the elaborate yuletide folly for the delight of his five children, aged one to eight.
He has spent $3000 over six months. He bought a dented white 1978 Ford ute on eBay, and had it sprayed red and de-rusted.
He bought 150 waterproof plastic boxes from China via the internet and had them painted in bright colours and sprayed with Merry Christmas.
He bought Santa's suit, in washable polyester, also on eBay, and stuffed with duct tape and newspapers.
But why, Mr Wallace? "It's a bit of fun, a bit of Christmas cheer," he said. "I thought it would get a few laughs."
Since its unveiling on December 1, "it's had a life of its own. I can't walk out the front without somebody having a chat to me about it. I was bringing the bins in at 6 o'clock this morning and the lady across the road said, 'I love it. It's brought so much cheer to the area'.
"I went and got the boys' hair cut in Station Street, Fairfield, and the hairdresser goes, 'every single person who comes in here talks about your ute'."
This recently renumbered ex Canadian National SD40-2 could use some paint on it's nose.
