In the area I live, dense fog has become more rare than ever. So when they do appear in hours that I am not sleeping thru, that is the signal for me to grab my camera and tripod.

I think this could be quite helpful for some parents and children. It conveys an important message, while being non-specific.

Mute Swan turning eggs

Cygnus olor at Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve

Photograph taken from Willow hide on a quiet rainy day. This swan and its partner had set up their nest a few meters from the hide and having enjoyed watching them for a number of weekends I now have collection of shots of the pair tending their nest and eggs. This is a crop from one of these photographs. For a portrait of the same pair at changeover on a sunnier day see: And what time do you call this?

Tanner M. Jones, a 19-year-old light armored vehicle mechanic for CLB-31, 31st MEU, and a native of Denver, Colo., in Bradshaw Field, Australia, Sept. 1, 2013. The Marines of CLB-31's maintenance section are working long days and late nights to keep pace with the required maintenance that comes with supporting the battalion-sized element currently executing Exercise Koolendong 13. Koolendong is a week-long, live-fire exercise that demonstrates the operational reach of the 31st MEU and reinforces why it is the force of choice for the Asia-Pacific region. Also participating in the exercise is the Marine Rotational Force - Darwin and soldiers of the 5th Royal Australian Army. The 31st MEU brings what it needs to sustain itself to accomplish the mission or to pave the way for follow-on forces. The size and composition of the 31st MEU makes it well suited for amphibious operations, which includes raids, assaults, evacuations and humanitarian assistance operations.

ODC: Signs of the Season

Perhaps an all too simplistic diagram for such a complex subject. But there is a definite balance to strike when considering the layout of a web page in relation to the users and the client's wants and needs. The purpose of the page will obviously influence this but its something that is a constant struggle and getting it right results in conversions, and increased user interaction.

Silly question, I know.

Watercolor and gouache on an old book.

I have a big pile of clearance books whose covers are just aching to be painted.  Part of me feels a little guilty—my parents instilled in me very early the belief that books are to be treated with great gentleness and respect… and painting all over them seems (you know) to run contrary to that.

But, the colored canvas covers are so lovely.  And the books were so cheap (15¢ each!)—really, my purchase only saved them from the dumpster behind Goodwill.  Another day unsold, and they would have been thrown out.

And probably no one would have ever again loved the Biennial Review of Anthropology, 1961

But hopefully someone can love it now.
