Marie Kondo taught us that we only need to keep items that "spark joy." This lesson applies to photography also. You want to avoid a cluttered image. Distracting elements take away from the main idea of the photo. You just want to keep the elements of the photo that spark joy.
A photographer's greatest tool in de-cluttering an image is composition. By moving closer, zooming in, or changing one's perspective, it is often -- but not always -- possible to eliminate distracting elements from the frame. In doing so, the question arises as to whether the photographer is misrepresenting how the scene truly looked. And an even bigger question, as to whether photography is by definition a lie since each photograph excludes the bigger picture just outside the edges of the frame.
In my photography, I try to maintain a high level of fidelity to the natural world. I don't want to make photos that look or feel fake. When I say I want to maintain fidelity to the scene, I don't mean that I want to make photos that are obvious snapshots, though. I want my photos to stand out and be unique. But natural. For instance, if I were hiking with you, I would be looking to make a photo of a scene or perspective that maybe you wouldn't have noticed (i.e. it would be unique to me), but that if you saw it after the fact you would believe it to be an authentic representation of the world on that hike on that day. In other words, while maybe the scene wouldn't catch your eye, it would have been possible for you to see it if I pointed it out.
Since everyone knows that a photographer, in framing a photo, is deliberately choosing what to include and exclude, it doesn't feel "fake" to use composition to eliminate distracting elements.
That's what makes this photo complicated for me. Here, I was drawn to the scene because of the relationship between the vertical lines of the tree trunks and their diagonal shadows, and how they contrasted with the bright white snow. The problem here is that while the scene was striking to observe, when I photographed it, I could not possibly find a composition that eliminated all the distracting little twigs popping out of the snow. Believe me, I tried. Since I couldn't subtract them with composition, I cloned them out in photoshop.
Even without the twigs, I feel like the photo is still honest to the way the scene felt. When I was there my mind filtered them out and I saw the big picture: the trunks and the shadows. It didn't feel cluttered. But when I looked at the photos on my computer it did.
Anyway, even if I won't be able to enter this photo into a contest like the NLPA due to the photoshopped twigs, it still reminds me of that beautiful morning on the side of Mount Moosilauke and it still sparks joy.

It's been a while since I've seen a shot as I framed it in the camera and got those chills... Where I knew it was just right.. the focus the framing the everything. For me, this one did that again. I usually like my photos and am pleased with them, mostly because of my subject but this one I'm proud to say I LOVE!... I love the framing of their two bodies, her curls, the contrast of her skin color to his, the size of her hand in his, the veins in his arm (one of the weird things I love about him).
We've been working with A on crossing the street, looking both ways, holding our hands and all that jazz. She's currently afraid of cars but it's a scary thought what can happen to a child in seconds. The two of them were on the curb looking both ways and getting ready to cross when I caught this.
The photo is hardly cropped. I took a bit off the bottom and brought it to 4x5 since 4x6 just seemed too long. I worked with the curves and sharpened the photo a bit since it was shot at f 2.0. I also used the Lens Distortion to create the vignette (yah, i'm addicted and need some help)... Oh... and this photo recertified my love for the 50mm.
I'm wondering if I should BW this photo. Are the greens making it too busy?
What a cold and gloomy summer we have here this year. Finally the sun shines, so I needed to go out and take some pictures. :)

I really need to upload something new soon :( This is another from summer (I suppose you already guessed it because of the dress). I took the photo for the right part at 5AM, when it was still dark, and the left around 8AM, without moving the camera so I could put them together in Photoshop later.
I got many strange looks from the people who was walking along the promenade. I man spent like ten minutes looking at me while I was taking the first photo (yes, there is crazy people apart from me who is already awake at that hour), before asking if I was expecting the sun to come from there. Which I was not: I was not trying to take a photo of a sunrise as he tought. But it was funny.
I'm sorry for having been such a crappy Flickr contact lately. I have Internet only during weekends and I try not to spend it all in front of a screen. Not going to uni (or work) means much less contact with other humans so I try to at least meet with friends Saturdays and Sundays (we are going to see Harry Potter tomorrow. Yay!). The rest of the week people is too busy.
I am thinking about spending some months in Russia. Sometimes it sounds like a great idea because I'd see my relatives and old friends. But then I try to think about what exactly I'd do there after vacations are over and everybody is working or studying again and it suddenly sounds depressing. I know I've said it before, but I feel lost.
Definitively lost.

These guys were having a tough time getting off of the ground. One guy who started before these was already floating on the updraft coming from the ocean.
Sometimes very little is needed. A simple look to something ordinary. Maybe it will remind something to us and make us to smile. An extravaganza is nice and great, but sometimes a quiet melancholy is more. It's closer to ourselves and it tells a story that only we can understand.

A few days ago, I was a bit ill. And I was so bored lying around and watching TV, reading, and playing video games, that I needed to do something with my hands, and so I decided to build a castle wall section with lots of detail. Sorry about the bad photos I was using my phone (I always use my phone for taking photos, I need a proper camera).
Just had a birthday back on 21 Sept and for a present, I got to drive a couple of very nice cars, an Audi R8 and a Maserati Grantourismo on the Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania. My daughter Brianne, took some nice pics that I included in the first comment. While I was there, a racing school was practicing next to us. Be it horses, motorcycles or cars I just can't resist a good pan shot. I watched and shot the cars and couldn't help thinking about when I was a kid going the New York Car Show.
My dad would take us to the car show; I always visited the Racing School booths and would get brochures. It was an unaffordable dream
but I always loved the thought. I never pursued racing unless you count my 32 mile commute back and forth to work on I-80 but I've always enjoyed going fast, very fast at times. So I've been thinking - Maybe I should see if they have an "Old Fart" class. :) After all, when I got my Fiat it came with a day long track experience and on the Auto-cross course, out of about 80 young stud types I came in third. I was proud of myself...
