The Glasgow Necropolis is multi-faith. The 50,000 residents are made up of Catholics, Protestants, Quakers, Jews, Lutherans and everybody else. Due to their beliefs the Jewish people buried in the Necropolis had to be buried in a separate plot.

The Giza Necropolis is an archaeological site in Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. This complex of ancient monuments includes the three pyramid complexes known as the Great Pyramids, the massive sculptureknown as the Great Sphinx, several cemeteries, a workers' village and an industrial complex. It is located some 9 km inland into the desert from the old town of Giza on the Nile, some 25 km southwest of Cairo city centre. The pyramids, which have historically loomed large as emblems of ancient Egypt in the Western imagination, were popularised in Hellenistic times, when the Great Pyramid was listed by Antipater of Sidon as one of theSeven Wonders of the World. It is by far the oldest of the ancient Wonders and the only one still in existence.

Dara ’22

Like all classical Roman cities, Dara had the necropolis built just outside the city walls, close enough that they could be easily visited by family but far enough that they didn't get in the way of the defense. By late Roman times Christianity was undermining the strict division between the city of the living and that of the dead (the literal meaning of necropolis) but only privileged Christians received burial in the churchyard. Like other near eastern cities, Dara's necropolis is carved into the nearest cliffside. You can see similar examples in Urfa, Seleucia, Petra, and of course the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.

What's interesting here is that you can see further examples of stonecarving like in the mines just next door. At a guess, I'd say this place was originally a mine producing stones for the walls when the village was abruptly fortified in 505 and only afterwards was it converted into a necropolis for the new city.

The Colon Cemetery, or more fully in the Spanish language Cementerio de Cristóbal Colón, was founded in 1876 in the Vedado neighbourhood of Havana, Cuba on top of Espada Cemetery. Named for Christopher Columbus, the 140 acre (57 ha) cemetery is noted for its many elaborately sculpted memorials. It is estimated that today the cemetery has more than 500 major mausoleums, chapels, and family vaults.

The first impact of Colon Cemetery is a seemingly endless succession of tombs blinding white in the midday heat, few shade trees and nowhere to sit. In front of the main entrance, at the axes of the principal avenues Avenida Cristobal Colón, Obispo Espada and Obispo Fray Jacinto, stands the Central Chapel apparently modelled on Il Duomo in Florence. On every side rectangular streets lead geometrically to the cemetery’s 56 hectares, designed by Loira to define the rank and social status of the dead with distinct areas, almost city suburbs: priests, soldiers, brotherhoods, the wealthy, the poor, infants, victims of epidemics, pagans and the condemned. The best preserved and grandest tombs stand on or near these central avenues and their axes.

With more than 800,000 graves and 1 million interments, space in the Colon Cemetery is currently at a premium and as such after three years remains are removed from their tombs, boxed and placed in a storage building.
