The Necrópolis del Maipés is an impressive Guanche burial site near the coastal town of Agaete on Gran Canaria, Spain. (The Guanches were the original inhabitants of this Canary Island.) The name 'Maipés' comes from 'mal pais' or 'bad lands', and refers to the fact that the necropolis is built on lava that flowed from nearby volcanoes about 3000 years ago. The tumuli are built from these volcanic rocks and therefore echo the surrounding scenery. In the foreground here you can see one of the necropolis's many tumuli and a hint of lava flow bottom right. In the background are island mountains formed by basaltic lava flows. Not a bad spot to find one's final resting place. (This photo is seen to best advantage full screen.)

Necropolis: City of the Dead
Part of Bradford Literature Festival 2015, a guided walk around Undercliffe Cemetery by Mark Davies, Bradfordian author, historian and photographer.
"Vast and solitary, St George's is one of the most magnificent 18th-century church in Dorset. It rises from the rocky, treeless and dramatic peninsula of Portland and is the masterwork of a local mason named Thomas Gilbert who supplied the Portland stone used to build St Paul’'s Cathedral.
The sprawling churchyard is a treasure trove of fabulous headstones and memorials that tell tales of murder, piracy and adventure in a gloriously atmospheric setting.
There are inscriptions to Mary Way and William Lano, who were shot and killed in 1803 by a press gang, and Joseph Trevitt, an assistant warder at Portland Prison who was murdered by a convict in 1869."

Necropolis de Colón in Havana, Cuba, has a Monument to Los Bomberos (The Firemen). It honours and holds the remains of the firefighters who lost their lives in Havana’s great fire of May 17, 1890. The Monument is surrounded by ironwork fencing & many of these bat fence toppings. Bats are considered to be symbols of good luck.
Another foggy scene from the local cemetery.
I often feel I struggle with composition in colour photography but I was happy with this series.

One of the largest #necropolises in the world -- dating back to 13th century -- with a diameter of approximately 8 kilometers, #MakliHill is supposed to be the burial place of some 125,000 #Sufi #saints. It is located on the outskirts of #Thatta, the capital of lower #Sind until the 17th century, in what is the south-eastern province of Sind of present-day Pakistan.
This picture is dedicated to my dear friend Mr. Naveed Siraj who made my weekend when I was lying amuck in bed wondering what to do. We had a lovely road trip and we returned with some amazing pictures and visited some historically rich areas. Thank you, Mr. Siraj, for this take.
