Green jays are colorful, raucous and entertaining. We have had a flock for a number of years on our property. They are not always easy to photograph because it seems they always post a sentry in a high tree to alert the others of potential dangers. They make a variety of harsh calls, including one that sounds very similar to a red-shouldered hawk and something that is between a gargle and a rattle. But occasionally they grace me with some wonderful moments to capture with my camera. During June this year the fledglings were particularly demanding and they found my yard with an abundance of feeders an easy solution to gathering food. The young ones will remain with the parents and help in caring for the next brood before they move on to raising their own. This sequence caught an interaction between an adult bird and a junior who was begging for food and appeared to have a temper tantrum before finally getting his or her way.

A visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney provided many glorious sights and one of the first things that caught my eye after getting there at 7.30 am (I'm keen!) was a Salvia with dynamic colour against the darker foliage.

As it was early morning there was lots of dew that provided bokeh interest as well.

Salvia is the largest genus of plants in the sage family Lamiaceae, with nearly 1000 species of shrubs, herbaceous perennials, and annuals.

Male summer tanagers are beautiful birds to see and hear. They are one of the first birds to arrive in spring and last to leave for winter at our property. I sometimes hear the song before I see one of the birds. The females are duller, more of a yellow-olive green combination.

The wispy tiny red coreopsis flowers bounce happily in the breeze.

Gulf fritillaries look completely different when seen from different viewpoints. Top of the wings are vivid orange with small black and silvery-white markings. Underside of the wings are orange and brown with bold silver-white spots. I find they are easy to photograph compared to other butterfly species. They have a tendency to perch for longer periods and will perch with wings folded or open equally.

Gulf fritillary butterfly (with colors of orange, silver and brown) perching on the back side of a orange and yellow flower. The flower is commonly known by several names - "pride of Barbados" or rattletrap shrub are two that I know of.

I have a difficult time telling the painted lady and American lady species of butterflies apart. I'm pretty sure this one is the painted lady (vanessa cardui) and it looked beautiful on a pink zinnia.

Hermit thrush is a winter visitor to our neighborhood. This one has been coming in to enjoy the bird bath on a regular basis this winter. Here it seems to be engaging in a kind of dance along the fence. Quite fancy moves.

This beautiful carper of leaves is just outside my home

The autumn sage plant is blooming (aka salvia gregii, I believe) and the hummingbirds love it. Although the name of the plant is autumn sage, this one blooms at various times almost all year, taking a break during the coldest winter months. This particular plant has been in my yard for at least 10 years that I know of. It is a hardy little shrub. The hummingbird is a male black-chinned.

This little woodpecker was trying to avoid being photographed by moving to the opposite side of the tree as I tried to focus. It was not bothered enough to leave so after finding a place that had sufficient light for a decent shot, I just waited him out. These migratory woodpeckers typically visit us during fall and winter.

These are common around our property. This male was checking out the seed variety in my feeders. I have also seen them eat citrus fruit or grape jelly that I put out for orioles and woodpeckers.

Lots of these woodpeckers live on our property. They live here year-round and family groups seem to stay together long after the youngsters have fledged and become able to forage independently. I love them. Similar to red-bellied woodpeckers but with a different range. They have a yellow-gold mark on the nape and near the bill (hence the name golden-fronted) and males also have a red spot on the crown.

My aunt's garden attracted lots of butterflies and on one spectacular day in October 2020, I had the pleasure of just sitting and photographing as many as possible. Her garden consisted of lots of zinnias with a spattering of lantana, sage, lavender and rosemary.
