As is often the case in nature the things that don't seem beautiful at first glance are just waiting for a second look to reveal more stunning details.

Getting below what we typically see on the surface of a mushroom I discovered this giant fungi had a network of extremely elegant lamella (gills). I worked with these sensual lines to compose a photo that reveals incredible depth of beauty in an object perhaps not often thought of as beautiful.

I ended up producing a photo that I love and am truly proud of, but more importantly learned a lesson to always dig deeper and work harder to reveal secrets I may have thought to overlook. I LOVE NATURE.

Hummingbird seen in my yard during August 2021 - they were preparing for migration and seemed happy to find my feeders with nectar and many flowering plants to help them fatten up. Ruby-throated hummingbird, a male flashing his red gorget.

This picture was taken in Frederiksberg Have in Copenhagen, Denmark. As I was shooting some pictures of this male mallard duck, he wanted to have a little rest. He kept an eye on me while I was photographing. As I got a few pictures, I left him so he could have a rest.

The Long-billed Thrasher looks a lot like the Brown Thrasher of the eastern U.S. but lives in the dry, brushy landscapes of southeast Texas and northeastern Mexico. It's a rich brown bird with heavy black streaking on white underparts, a grayish face, and an orange eye. Like other thrashers, it lives in dense brush and spends much of its time scratching or tossing leaves aside to catch insects on the ground. In spring, males sometimes perch in the open and sing a jumbled song with many repeated phrases. This particular one was in the shadows on one of the fig trees in my yard. Those orange eyes are really striking.

I found this beautiful shell while on one of my many beach walks. All I wanted to showcase was the natural beauty that already existed in the spiral pattern, and to focus on simplicity.

This was an impressive bird to see in Cancun. I waited as long as possible for it to move to a more suitable photo spot but had to settle for shots with the busy background. This is a large heron with a bare yellow patch on the throat, white down the center of the throat to the breast, dark gray or black head and gray body with a pattern of buff colored bars or stripes on the neck (hence the name). This species has only one recorded sighting within the US - in Hidalgo County, Texas. The normal range is in Mexico down into Columbia. Yet another lifer on the books.

Cancun, Mexico during April 2022

some green wild olives after a rain during August 2020 in Rockport, Texas.

A brilliant red color that really caught my attention. And this dragonfly was nice enough to stop and pose for me.

I always love the beautiful pomegranate blossoms on this tree. The tree has been on our property since before we purchased it in 2009 and has survived some severe conditions. Unfortunately the fruit is never very good for some reason. The birds love it though.

This tiny moth was perched between the lantana clusters. I don't know the species but it has some interesting markings if you look closely.

Not all butterflies are patient enough to wait for you to take as many photos as you want. Well this tiny skipper was. Never stop during her (his) meal, but from time to time switched places to look at me better. And I thought I was the curios one...

Mardon is the name of this very tiny skipper of only one inch of size. Just watch the size of the flower, and then see the Skipper, you will understand what I mean about its size!

The Mardon Skipper is currently listed as an endangered species. Non migratory, and they love the grasslands.

My photography is mostly nature. I enjoy macro photography a lot, but it is difficult to decide what a I like the most about this art.

Rare snow in our area of Texas (first time since December 2004) and some of the critters were not sure what to make of it. I'm not a fan of cold wet weather (one of the reasons I love living in South Texas is that we don't have much of it) but had to take the opportunity to experiment photographing this unusual weather.

Golden fronted woodpecker on a mesquite tree in my front yard.

Portland, Texas.

A female painted bunting posed for a picture as she came into the yard for some water. Not as flashy as the boldly colored males of the species, she is subtly pretty in shades of green.

Montell, Uvalde County, Texas during August 2020

One of the species of dragonflies that I find on our property near the Nueces River. The name setwing comes from the habit of perching with the forewings set forward rather than straight out to the side as other species of dragonfly typically do.

Montell, Uvalde County, Texas in August 2021

The only shot I was able to get of this orange beauty and the light was against me, but I was happy to document this migrating bird as it took a break to enjoy some sugar water from my feeders.

Montell, Uvalde County, Texas in September 2021

This pretty little lady is not as flashy as the multicolored males of the species but her subtle green shades help keep her hidden when sitting on her nest. She was foraging in my yard for seeds. They seem to prefer fresh seeds right off the plant over seeds in a bird feeder.

A small, brightly colored damselfly - fiery orange-red as the name suggests. It was perched on a bare twig overhanging a puddle near the Nueces River in Montell, Uvalde County - June 2022

Crop important mais...C'est une Paruline jaune :-))

Plant life along the Window Trail in Big Bend National Park. A wondrous place with diverse environments, thus diverse plant life and wildlife. I'm not sure what the white flower is - possible a wild multiflora rose, The medusa-like seed pod is from a wild clematis vine - I did not see blooms, but I think is is purple leather flower or one very similar to that.

Big Bend National Park in June 2019.

A damselfly sporting a lovely lavender hue with a blue tipped tail. This one appears to have a damaged wing. It is a male. The female of this species is tan with markings.

Montell, Uvalde County, Texas during April 2021

This tiny bird, I find easier to find and identify by it's squeaky, buzzy calls. Very small, very fast and I worked hard to get for usable shots of this one. In Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.

On a ranch near George West, Texas. Lots of noisy green jays here. Green jays live in family groups and youngsters stay with their parents to help with the next brood of hatchlings before moving on to form their own family groups. Interesting behavior. There tends to be one always on lookout from a high perch and this makes it hard photograph them unless you can find a spot to hide and wait for them to show up.

in the first days of June I wondered if I should take a break on flowers to do something different. Well, the very next week: flowers...

Explored April 7, 2009-thank you for the comments

Brephidium exilis

This tiny little butterfly is quite colorful with reddish upper wings surrounded by a white fringe and a dusty blue color at the base of the wings and thorax. The wingspan is only about 1/2 inch. This one was feeding on the tattered remains of a Mexican hat flower. Montell, Uvalde County, Texas during November 2020

I am excited about "Macro Monday" theme "When I was a child..."!!! 💃

Also I'm on the hunt for a new lens. It's about time :D

Bright red male northern cardinal posing for the camera.

Montell, Uvalde County, Texas during December 2019.

Hummingbirds enjoying something besides the sugar water I put out for them. We were in a drought that followed a harsh winter freeze for Texas so I had to water in order to get some flowers to bloom for them.
