A miniature palace
thrusts spires into the sky like spears into a map
of celestial bodies, and a star squadron
over Gaspra serenades
how a lonely Poseidon
captured Aurora not by bravery,
but by cunning and was buried here
forever under a vine...
The lake was silent for some time. Finally, it said:
"I weep for Narcissus, but I never noticed that Narcissus was beautiful. I weep because, each time he knelt beside my banks, I could see, in the depths of his eyes, my own beauty reflected".

View of the mansion at Nymans Gardens, West Sussex. You will have noticed that the frontal part of the building has been preserved as a ruin and that only one of the side wings is still occupied. This is a result of a fire in 1947, a calamity the owners, the Messel family, never really recovered from. In the early 1950s, the whole estate was acquired by the National Trust. The point of the estate had always been to create an alternative world of beauty - far away from noisy cities and dirty industries. The building may look medieval, but it was built in the first half of the 19th century. When the Messels (stock brokers from Germany who had made their fortune in Britain and, later, liaised with nobility) purchased the place in the 1890s, they followed this trajectory and turned the gardens into a horticultural paradise. Consequently, when the National Trust preserves the estate, it also preserves a dream.

The Waterfall of the Gods, Viking cruise excursion, Northern Iceland's Natural Treasures
Goðafoss translates from modern Icelandic as "the waterfall of the gods", a nickname said to come from a myth from Iceland's history. According to legend, after converting the country to Christianity, Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði (one of the main rulers of the island at that time) threw all his pagan idols into the waterfall, thus changing the Viking gods for the Christian god.

And though the course may change sometimes
Rivers always reach the sea ....
The River Severn, the longest river in the UK, takes its rise nine miles to the west of Llanidloes high up on the slopes of Pumlumon, the highest point in the central range of the Cambrian Mountains. The Roman name for the Severn (the Hafren in Welsh) was Sabrina, and ancient myth tells Sabrina was one of three sisters, all water nymphs, who met on Pen Pumlumon to discuss how they might wend their way to the sea. Each sister took a different route, Ystwyth to the west and Varga (the Wye) away to the south, while Sabrina who loved the land, set out on a slow meandering course that led her far into the east. The spirit of Sabrina still resides in the sparkling waters of the river and nowhere is her benevolent presence more apparent than here, where she first set forth upon her long journey to the sea.

This Milky Way photo was taken close to a popular beach with hundreds of visitors and cars by day and yet having an excellent night sky after the onset of astronomical twilight. The foreground was illuminated by the rotating lighthouse beam a few hundred meters away, thus providing a means of light painting of the scene.
Some of the most beautiful stories of ancient times refer to the silvery band of the Milky Way - a celestial river comprised by the light of billions of stars, that has traveled for thousands of years to reach our eyes. This majestic arc of light is more clearly visible on summer nights, when our gaze is towards the center of the Milky Way, which lies at about 25 thousand light years away - the brightest part of the band just above the tree and to left of the “Dark Horse” silhouette.
This band is bisected by obscuring clouds of interstellar dust, thus forming the “Great Galactic Rift”. The interstellar gas and dust gave birth to everything else in the Universe, including us - we are all made of stardust after all.
My deepest thanks and warmest wishes to everyone for 2025 - stay healthy and keep looking up!

Tengu (Japanese: 天狗, lit. "Heavenly Dog" or "Heavenly Sentinel") are a type of legendary creature found in Japanese folk religion. They are considered a type of yōkai (supernatural beings) or Shinto kami (gods). The tengu were originally thought to take the forms of birds of prey and monkey deity, they are traditionally depicted with human, monkey and avian characteristics. Sarutahiko Ōkami is considered to be the original model of Konoha-Tengu (a long-nosed supernatural creature with red face), which today is widely considered the tengu's defining characteristic in the popular imagination. He is the Shinto monkey deity who sheds light on heaven and earth, some experts theorize that Sarutahiko was a sun god worshiped in Ise region prior to the popularization of Amaterasu.
Buddhism long held that the tengu were disruptive demons and harbingers of war. Their image gradually softened, however, into one of protective and even manifestations of buddhist deities, if still dangerous, spirits of the mountains and forests. Tengu are associated with the ascetic practice of Shugendō, and they are usually depicted in the garb of its followers, the yamabushi.

So this shot was pure luck. Was on an aircraft flying from Dubai to Heathrow and following the flight path on screen. Noticed we were going through Turkey so opened the blinds and saw this at 36000 feet up. Had to try take the shot and even though some clarity lost through the window it was just a beautiful sight and had to share!
Ararat is located at Agri in eastern Turkey near the Armenian and Iranian borders. The summit of Mt. Ararat is 5,165 meters above sea level. It is higher than any mountain in the continental United States except for Alaska or in Europe outside the Caucasus.
Ararat is a dormant volcano; the last eruption was on June 2, 1840. At present the upper third of the mountain is covered with snow all the time; the last hundred meters of snow at the top have turned to ice. For climbers on the mountain, fresh running water is available after the sun has been up a while to melt the snow, but it is cut off in the late afternoon when cold air has overcome the heat of the sun. Below the snow the slopes are covered with great blocks of black basalt rock, some as large as village houses.
Over the years various groups have explored Ararat in the hopes of finding remains of Noah's Ark. Both Josephus in about 70 A.D. and Marco Polo about 1300 A.D. mention its existence on the mountain, but their reports are based on others' accounts. Josephus remarks that its remains are on display for all to see without need of an organised exploration. In more recent years many groups have hunted for it there. The possibility that ancient fables are historical fact is intriguing, and each new discovery of truth in previously discredited records gives additional strength to continuing the search for archaeological confirmation.
However, the problems of establishing exactly what the biblical record in this case means are serious ones that need to be settled even before one accepts this particular high mountain as the right place to look for the ark. In itself even that ignores the possibility that Noah and his family used up the ark in bits and pieces to build their new homes, a fate that has destroyed many other famous structures in the Near East since.
The story of Noah's ark, as it is told in the Bible, is a reworking of an earlier Babylonian myth recorded in the Gilgamesh Epic. The hero of the earlier version is one Utnapishtim, the favorite of Ea, the god of wisdom. It seems probable that the Babylonian story was based on an unusually devastating flood in the Euphrates (Firat) River basin, and that the ark in it grounded on the slopes of one of the Zagros mountains. The biblical word that we read as "Ararat" could as well be read "Urartu"; the text has merely "rrt" and the proper vowels must be supplied.
Urartu was the name of a historical kingdom, but the word also meant "a land far away" and "a place in the north." So, while Buyuk Agri Dagi is a spectacular mountain and not a difficult one to climb for those experienced in high altitude exercise, it still seems less than likely that Noah's Ark will be found there. That doubt does not detract from the continuing interest in it, nor from the important achievements of archaeologists in deepening our understanding of the Old Testament.

But we have this hostility to the external world
Because of the superstition, the myth
The absolutely unfounded theory
That you yourself exist only inside your skin
Now I wanna propose another idea
You're not something that is the result of the Big Bang
Or the end of the process
You are still the process
You are the Big Bang
The original force of the Universe
Coming on as whoever you are
See when I meet you
I see not just what you define yourself as
This is so and so and this is so and so and this is so and so
I see everyone of you as the primordial energy of the Universe
Coming on at me in this particular way
And I know I'm that too.

Tip turkey, dumpster chook, rubbish raptor – the Australian white ibis goes by many unflattering names. But it is a true urban success story, scavenging to survive in cities across Australia as wetlands have been lost.
The Australian white ibis (Threskiornis molucca) is a wading bird of the ibis family, Threskiornithidae. It is widespread across much of Australia. It has a predominantly white plumage with a bare, black head, long downcurved bill, and black legs. While it is closely related to the African sacred ibis, the Australian white ibis is a native Australian bird. Contrary to urban myth, it is not a feral species introduced to Australia by people, and it does not come from Egypt.

The last biplane fighter to enter service with the RAF in the late 1930s, the Gloster Gladiator was already obsolescent and ordered as a stop gap in case of delays to the much more capable Spitfires and Hurricanes then in development.
The Gladiator had a very sprightly performance for a biplane, and despite being so outdated, many hundreds were built and saw much service during WW2 with a wide variety of Air Forces. They generally acquitted themselves surprisingly well - notably in the defence of Malta, where they attained a legendary status. A myth formed that three Gladiators, respectively named Faith, Hope and Charity, provided the Island's entire air cover during the Siege of Malta in 1940. It's not entirely true, but a good story is better than the reality!
One of only two remaining airworthy, this example is owned by The Shuttleworth Collection and seen here displaying at its home base of Old Warden.

Ozzy. À l’homme derrière le mythe.
Celui qui a bercé mon adolescence.
J’ai choisi cette chanson, Mama I’m Coming Home,
Je me revois adolescente.
Mes parents me poussaient, encourageaient, protégeaient.
même mon père l’a compris. ❤️
juste… humain.
Hommage à un homme vrai. ❤️💔🙏

Ozzy. To the man behind the myth.
The one who carried my teenage years.
I chose this song, Mama I’m Coming Home,
because to me it doesn’t scream,
it confesses.
It was his voice, but it’s his heart we hear.
The heart that loved despite rejection.
The heart that forgave without being asked.
The heart that stayed standing, even twisted, even broken.
I see myself as a teenager again.
My parents supported me, pushed me, protected me.
They couldn’t understand why I loved you, Ozzy.
That “crazy one”, that “junkie”, that “madman with black sunglasses”,
as they used to say back then.
But I saw clearly.
I saw a sincere man in a world full of masks.
Years later, even my father understood. ❤️
Because truth, when spoken the way he did,
always finds its way through.
Some might say.
“Why this song? She doesn’t deserve it.”
But I didn’t choose it for her.
I chose it for him.
Because this song speaks of unconditional forgiveness.
Of coming back to what hurt us,
but that we never stopped loving.
And that was Ozzy.
That’s the man I admired.
This portrait is his. For him.
This silent cry is mine.
And this song,
is what he would have sung to all of us, as he left.
No screams. No show.
Just… human.
A tribute to a true man. ❤️💔🙏

Happy Monochrome Monday!
Funerary figures are often surrounded by myths that say they accompany and protect the souls of the deceased in the afterlife. These figures symbolize the belief in life after death and the idea that they help the dead survive in the other world and fulfill their tasks.
