'Stalag Mythes' On Black

Picture taken after sunset near Crystal Mountain, WA. Icicles formed on top of the roots of a tree. The level of the current was lower than usual which makes it look like they are above river level. I am struggling finding the right setting on my monitor, this picture is NOT supposed to be dark, so if it is, blame my monitor, or yours ;-)

A creation myth is a symbolic narrative of how the world began and how people first came to inhabit it. While in popular usage the term myth often refers to false or fanciful stories, members of cultures often ascribe varying degrees of truth to their creation myths. In the society in which it is told, a creation myth is usually regarded as conveying profound truths – metaphorically, symbolically, historically, or literally. They are commonly, although not always, considered cosmogonical myths – that is, they describe the ordering of the cosmos from a state of chaos or amorphousness.

"Without an understanding of myth or religion, without an understanding of the relationship between destruction and creation, death and rebirth, the individual suffers the mysteries of life as meaningless mayhem alone."

(Marion Woodman - Canadian author, b.1928)

Manikarnika Kund is a sacred pond located next to Manikarnika Ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).

Each year in November it is dug out from the dirt which covers it up from the holy river floods of the rainy season.

This large rectangular structure, with surrounding steps is mythologically related to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The Chakra-Pushkarini Kund or “Discus Lotus-Pond” is said to be so ancient that it was present before King Bhagiratha brought the Ganges to Varanasi and is supposed to have been dug by Lord Vishnu at the time of creation with his disc.

The word “Manikarnika” refers “Jeweled Earring” and this name was given because Lord Shiva’s earring fell into the well when it was a very large lake.

This historic place symbolizes creation, and the cremation ghat next to it is all about death, the hot ashes of the burnt bodies nearby makes one remember the inevitable destruction of everything in the world.

Many pilgrims take a bath here after performing the rituals of cremation. It is also said to be lucky for couples to take a bath together in this well.

Lauerzersee, kleine Insel Schwanau und die beiden Mythen

In past centuries, First Nations people of the Pacific Northwest – Kwakiutl, Haida, Tlinglit, Coast Salish, Nuxalt. Tsimshian – raised up huge poles of red cedar, carved and painted in bright colors with red, black, green.

In Vancouver's Stanley Park a collection of these examples of indigenous culture can be viewed by visitors to the city and locals alike. Grouped on Brockton Point, they feature creatures from ancient stories - some easily recognisable, like eagles and fish, while others are combined characters, such as sea-bears.

By far the most common myth about Violette is that she lives in a tower of ice built by the gods themselves, with creatures not born of this world.

The sacred ice is said to preserve her for eternity.

The Pleiades star cluster is hands down my favorite object in the nighttime sky. Known by many names and by every civilization to ever inhabit our planet, Messier 45 ("The Seven Sisters", "Subaru", "The Hen with her Chicks"), is easily visible to the unaided eye, even from moderately light-polluted skies. Each of the bright stars is named for mythological characters Atlas, Pleione, and their 7 daughters, Alcyone, Merope, Sterope, Maia, Taygeta, Celaeno, and Electra. Not only do these characters feature prominently in Greek mythology, the star cluster itself does as well: In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus uses the cluster as a navigational beacon. The cluster is mentioned 3 times in the Bible and is illustrated in a prehistoric cave painting at Lascaux. It's also the corporate logo for carmaker Subaru.

It contains at least 1,000 stars, but only 5 to 10 are bright enough to be seen with the unaided eye, and these are the ones that people are referring to when they say "The Pleiades". Each of these giant stars is far brighter than our Sun. If you were to observe the Sun from the same distance, you would need binoculars or a telescope to see it at all!

It is estimated to be 444 light-years away and it's diameter is 15 light-years. The stars are surrounded by interstellar dust and gas. This material would ordinarily be invisible to us, but it’s illuminated by the stars in what’s known as a reflection nebula. The nebula is blue, caused by a light scattering effect not unlike the one that colors Earth’s sky blue. Its wavy appearance comes from interactions between the nebula and the stars’ magnetic fields.

The myth of the Pleiades cluster and the constellation Orion is that the Hunter is enamored with the beauty of the young maidens and he is greedily pursuing them across the sky each night. Indeed that is the easiest way to spot the Pleiades. Find Orion and scan over in the direction he's facing and you'll find them within Taurus the Bull.

Temple of Mythal

Some rise to great fame and live wealthy with the utmost of adulation surrounding them.

Some rise with no arms and legs yet they stand up tall,

and believe in a higher power that protects them from this cruel world.

Some give up and say "i can no longer fight."

Many delude themselves and live in a dream world a make believe fantasy.

Pain is part of living.

We are all basically.....all the same .......... only human,

and money can't buy you happiness and love.

Among the many myths and legends ingrained in our childhood memories, none ever seemed to inspire the level of intrigue and fascination as those ghastly tales of the haunted abandoned mansion or decrepit old building that plagued the imaginations of our youth. The stuff of legend indeed, yet as we have moved forward into another century those myths and tales have increasingly come to outlive the abandoned mansions and creepy old homes from which they were originally spawned, as the existence of many of these structures have rapidly become a thing of the past.

During a long afternoon of rural exploration with Brian (vanishingsouthgeorgia.com), I had the opportunity to visit one of these increasingly rare behemoths that have become the archetype of countless childhood ghost stories and folklore. The Harville House has an actual history that captures the imagination just as much as the mysterious tales that have surrounded its past. A historical marker has been erected recently on site that explains its early history. You can read it here.

I have been especially intrigued by some of the various personal accounts of the family that have been shared online by long time residents of the community. The "Harville Sisters", the last living of Keebler Harville's eleven children, last occupied the house during the 1960's. The period during their residency may have provided the basis for some of the later mysterious rumors associated with the house, most likely due to the sibling's supposed reputation as a couple of eccentric spinsters (neither were ever married) both with an equally odd demeanor. Nevertheless, the two sisters were evidently always held in high regard within the community. One memorable account offers some brief insight:

"Dr. Bohler would make house calls to the two sisters in the house. said it was neat as a pen and they would be dressed like made up china dolls without a wrinkle in bed spread!" (courtesy of joe, vanishingsouthgeorgia.com).

The last of the Harville family passed in the early '70's, leaving the house abandoned. I was told that afterward it eventually gained favor among the college crowd and became well known as an ideal out-of-town party destination for a while (must have been great having such easy access to these places back then. I envy the Gen X'ers. They don't realize how great they had it :)

So here we are 50 years since this place was last occupied. And as I observe the number of 'no trespassing' signs dotting the property while at the same time staring in awe at the dilapidated mansion standing on the hill, I feel much like I did when I was little; so enlightened yet so hesitant to approach any further over the fear of what will lie ahead. Only this time I'm not concerned with encountering any ghosts, but more likely just a disgruntled property owner with an overzealous 2nd amendment fetish...

Despite my current paranoia with confronting armed landowners (justifiably so), I've read from several others that the owners were open to talking with visitors, and mentioned that they were hoping to begin restorations on the house soon (are in the process now). Looks like they will be at it a while. I'll check back in another year or two.
