To recognize the contributions of our wonderful nurses during National Nursing Week 2021 (May 10 - 16) we’re asking for photos of nurses and teams in action at Island Health. Dr. Diane Sawchuck, RN, PhD., Lead, Evidence, Evaluation and Knowledge Translation and Adjunct faculty at UVic School of Nursing and UBC Faculty of Medicine, actively collaborates on a number of funded research projects across multiple initiatives in Island Health.

My first experiment with Multiple Exposure!...

Everyone firing some roman candles.

July 4-9, 2023, the 42nd National Veterans Wheelchair Games (NVWG) was held in Portland, Oregon. Presented by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Paralyzed Veterans of America, the competitions brought together nearly 400 Veteran athletes from the USA and Great Britain participating in over 25 events and fitness exhibitions. Over 1,400 Volunteers and 28 Sponsors answered the call in support of the 6-day event, with uncounted dozens of VA employees working double-duty. Participation is open to Veterans having spinal cord injuries, lower extremity amputations, multiple sclerosis, or other central neuro-muscular conditions. Physical disabilities must be permanent and measurable and require a wheelchair for sport participation. All Veterans registering for the National Veterans Wheelchair Games must be eligible to receive care at a VA medical facility. (VA/Robert Turtil)

Only processing done in Adobe Lightroom was to set Exposure to +2.75, Blacks to 8, image was resized in Photoshop to 1200x797 and saved to JPEG. - Note camera was removed from the tripod between the two shots which is why they do not align/register perfectly... view large on black or view a video blink comparison of the two shots. Backstory: Wednesday night while out shooting with Luke/PhotoInference he noticed this bright streak in the sky which I took these two shots of. To get a sense of scale that's the bowl of the Big Dipper to the lower left of the brightest streak, and the two pointer stars of the Big Dipper (see note) are about 5º (10 full moons apart) so this streak is about 3 full moons in length... and as the Pointer stars indicate North is down and to the left of this image...

At first, when the clouds were a little thicker and the stars were not visible, I thought it might be a light from the city, but as the clouds thinned and moved soon realized that it must be well above the clouds. The object and the brightest of the rays were visible to us for about 15+ minutes until the cloud cover thickened and it was obscured (another reason to think it was above the clouds). And because we could see the streak and the brightest of the rays with our unaided eyes, that implies that the main streak and rays are not lens aberrations.

Although it did not appear to move or change size when viewed with the naked eye, the streak and rays can be seen to be moving (towards the bottom of this image) relative to the background stars when the two shots (taken three minutes apart) are stacked and blink compared, which shows that the object and all the rays seen here are moving together. Click here to see video blink comparison of the two shots.

A quick search of the web did not uncover other reports or photos, but Luke did find this report of an asteroid passing near Earth that night.

Share in the mystery, view large on black.

And join the discussion of what it might possibly be in the comment thread of the video blink comparison image.

Our foster dog Bon Bon has a unique swimming style to say the least. We've had him about a week and took him out to Lake Mead today where he dove right in, but then didn't seem to really have a grasp on the whole dog paddle thing, more of a rabbit paddle really. That's our Loon Hound on the right kinda enjoying the show...

Bon Bon is a terrific 4yo White German Shepherd looking for his Fo'ever home...

I have things set up so that multiple students can be safely buffing, grinding, or forging at the same time. So far, so good.

Example of what is currently called Maltese Tatting (deluxe!) by Mlle. Riego, famous for writing tatting patterns between 1850 and 1880. Interpreting the pattern was a bear! Some things over explained and some things under explained with some elegant hand waving besides. Only took 3 and half hours to make two repeats!
