On July 29 2015 I joined Ned and the gang on one of the summer Mount Lemmon hikes. We hiked the loop formed by the Mt. Lemmon Trail and the Meadow Trail (formerly the Power Line Road and the Lemmon Park Trail) at the top of the mountain.

We found 3 Red-faced warblers near the top of Mt Lemmon in Tucson AZ. We had only seen one previously for a split second. This time we got good looks but not so good photos. This warbler is found in the mountains above 6,000 feet in AZ and NM. It is a very striking bird and has a pretty song.
Russ and I found our way here the day we were driving up Mt. Lemmon. I found the story of this man so incredibly important that I was mystified why we never learned about him in history class.

Join us for a bit of the car ride through snowy mountain majesty.
Mt Lemmon (O'odham: Babad Doʼag) is the highest point in the Santa Catalina Mountains in the Coronado National Forest on the north side of Tucson. It's peak stands 9,157 feet (2,791 m) above sea-level, and gets an avg snowfall of 180 inches/yr. It is home to the southernmost ski recreation area in the entire Northern Hemisphere. Mt. Lemmon is named for a rocking scientist chick, botanist Sarah Plummer Lemmon, who trekked to the top of the mountain with Native American guides in 1881.

Mt Lemmon is the highest peak (9000+') in the Santa Catalina Mountains which form the northern boundary of Tucson, Arizona in the Sonoran Desert. The range is a 'sky island' and part of the Coronado National Forest.
Ken tried so hard to avoid the pool of water. It didn't work and a slip on the slick wall sent him up to his neck in water.
Coleoptera Erotylidae. Bisquillions (my word) of them found on Mt. Lemmon Butterfly Trail. Roughly 3/4 of an inch long.
Tons of these pretty birds were all over Summerhaven, especially Marshall Gulch creekside.

Spencer Canyon campground. There are some really great sites here. Even on the Holiday weekend they did not fill up untill late Friday evening. This site was a little far away from where we parked but the site was at the edge of the hill. (no camping behind us) We loved it.
Tucson, Arizona, actually has city ordinances that help control light pollution. Although I've been there many times, it's very easy to get turned around at night with no street lights. The outlying towns are almost pitch black at night.
"The purpose of this code is to preserve the relationship of the residents of Pima County to their unique desert environment through protection of access to the dark night sky. Intended outcomes include continuing support of astronomical activity and minimizing wasted energy, while not compromising the safety, security, and well being of persons engaged in outdoor night time activities."
Nonetheless, a city with a population of over 500k is destined to produce light that emits high into the night sky. This image clearly illustrates the Tucson's lights fighting for room in the night. The foreground was lit up by a car coming down Mt. Lemmon.

When you drive around the mountain here in Casper, WY, you see signs for deer crossings. On Mt. Lemmon in Tucson the signs are for bear crossings. Maybe it's just me, but that seems a little backward.
Unfortunately I didn't see any bears, just this awesome sunset.
