i like how things in nature can mimic much larger things. this image reminds me of a large mountain plateau. the texture of the wood reminds me of the texture of stone.
this tree was burned two years ago in the Aspen fire on Mt. Lemmon (it made national news - not the tree, the fire)
The sky was amazing tonight. I wish that I could have captured its true beauty - you'll just have to take my word.
the large version is a little more dramatic.

High above the desert environment of Tucson, Arizona, is a small mountain community of Summerhaven. There was a wildfire here in 2003 that destroyed many homes, in addition to acres of forest. Slowely, the forest is returning. On our recent hike here we saw many baby pine trees about 5 inches tall sprouting. Now, some of the homes are also being reconstructed. This one sits on top of the mountain and would have a wonderful view of Tucson below.
The first snow on Mt Lemmon, north of Tucson, fell over the weekend. It's a big event in the desert to drive up the mountain to see snow and let the kids sled down the hills.
I joined Ned and the gang on the final summer Mount Lemmon hike on August 26 2015. We hiked the loop formed by the Mt. Lemmon Trail and the Meadow Trail (formerly the Power Line Road and the Lemmon Park Trail) at the top of the mountain.

Our first outing was a causal drive up Mount Lemmon, stopping at many if not most of the scenic overlooks. Enjoy the trip up and down the mountian.
Reminds me of fractals, a visual reminder: all that there is is undergirded by quantifiable information. Each day steadily unfolds as though the universe follows a boundry-limited river of purpose. I've heard it said that God sustains creation. Perhaps the information we see behind it all is his language.
On July 16 2014 I joined the Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalists led hike on Mt. Lemmon. We hiked the loop formed by the Mt. Lemmon Trail and the Meadow Trail (formerly the Power Line Road and the Lemmon Park Trail) at the top of the mountain.

Able to see and photograph 3 male Painted Redstarts on Mt. Lemmon today. Here one feeding on insects on a large pine tree, I have others where one hangs out near a privy picking off insects too!

I haven't heard anything about its effect on the Bighorn Fire. Fingers crossed.

The "0CD" is captured against a smoky sky as they run buckets on the slop over off of Radio Ridge above the mountain town of Summerhaven. The fire had jumped the line and got established in the burn scar from the 2003 Aspen fire. With plenty of dead snags still standing in there plus the regrowth of fuel over the years, the airshow was running all day to keep the fire in check with both water and retardant.

Yellow-eyed Juncos observed in many places on Mt. Lemmon, this picture taken at Rose Canyon & Lake in Pima County, Arizona. Love the eye color on these guys, we normally only get to see the Dark-eyed Junco so these are a real treat!
